things you learned skating today
« on: January 27, 2019, 07:03:57 PM »
thought it might be useful to have a compendium of the little hacks you figured out skating today.

today i realized that frontside slappys are easier when you've got the tail centered underneath the ball of your foot, like how you'd pop an ollie.
I started getting a lot better when I went back to college and started taking a lot of math classes when I was 31.

I figured out how to figure things out better, if that makes sense.

I figured out that having a wide stance on back feebles allows you to grind them way easier, be more stable, and makes them less scary. I have my front foot either right behind the front bolts or over the back 2 front bolts. Then I have my back foot placed a tiny bit behind the pocket of the tail. Also it's good to note that your toes should point parallel to the nose and tail and perpendicular to the rail. Nobody probably needs this info but my friend at the local helped me get this trick so much better today and I thought I'd share what he told me.
The year is 2364. Frog will be the only skateboard company.

Backside tricks out of manual are way easier if you do a switch front 180 into it.  I'd like to get them without needing that but even learning just a back 180 out of manual, it helps to have things spinning from the switch 180.

I learned just because the kid has a revive board doesn’t mean he knows what that means.

I figured having a shitty board really affects my skating. Tall people shouldn't skate small noses and tails, I want to let my wings fly, but the board is too small.

Frontside half cab rewind on mini ramp.  Pretty low on the wall tho but feels steezy.

I learned it doesn't feel really good to land a trick with your toes facing the ground.

When I back 180 off of a bump/bank I pop it straight and almost do the rotation late. It allows me to get way higher.

frontside slashes on coping are most fun when you have your arms up like 'don't shoot'

Slappy crooks. Way easier than I thought, not sure why I didn't even bother trying until now.

I relearned crooked Grinds. Almost forgot how good that trick feels.
Also learned that the aftermath of a slam is way worse than it was ten years ago.

How so

I'm not great at slappies generally, so I assumed crooks would be tough. Started messing around with them on a whim the other day, and they clicked. In case you were asking how...

1. Approach the ledge at a 30-40 degree angle
2. Angle your front foot slightly on the nose, but not hanging off toeside with your back foot not fully on the tail, but enough that you can pivot away from the ledge/curb when you pop/fall out
4. Right as you're about to hit the curb do that tiny hop/unweighting thing off your nose like when you bonk nollie over a crack, but push your board in front of you a bit and lean back
5. pop out/fall out, or 180/shuv out

I learned that it hurts heaps when you fall and land on your bare, unprotected elbow.

Learned pop shove it late flip, is easy af. You just have to have a good timing with the flip.

I suck at kickflips tho, i need to feel too much in the mood to land those properly.

Neen Williams makes a comment about flexing your core and oblique muscles before popping at 6:20. Never been conscious of this, just went out and tried it and it blew my mind. Not for simply front shuvs but for literally every flip trick I can do it helped me. It even helps when approaching something to ollie onto that is very narrow. It's like a zen, lock your body in its ready position sort of move. Wow. Not sure if I'm just complete trash and everyone already knew this.
