This is the now, and skateboarding and video are forever intertwined, making skateboarding as much an aesthetic endeavor as anything else. You can't have a million threads on people's skate style (a subjective aesthetic quality) without considering the big picture - that there is also the possibility that they skate well, but the overall aesthetic is ruined by them dressing in an unpleasing manner. It's part of it. As a topic it's less homo-erotic than some, more than others.

You are free to focus your account and skate by yourself on a small concrete pad in the middle of nowhere at any point.
