Starting a boards brand.
« on: February 22, 2019, 07:51:03 AM »
I had this idea from time to time, and i finally got the money to buy a stack of ten blank skateboards, (i´m minor, i work at a store but it still was difficult to get the money) I also bought a silk-screen printer to make the graphics, but i still cannot come out with the name of the brand, (i tought "cebolla skateboards" or something like that, but i want to figure out the name with my friends, so they can eventually feel part of the brand, and motivate them to keep skating, since some of them are dropping out skateboarding).
What are my chances to survive? I live in Mendoza, Argentina, and the only brands that exists here uses paper graphics and looks bad. So i guess i have an extra point once i come out with the graphics.
Another thing by my side is that my friends kill it from time to time compared with the videos that the other brands make, i also bought a sony vx2000 a year ago, i got my hands on a fisheye, and i came out with two pretty decent videos of 6 and 7 minutes each.
If anyone has an advice or something i would aprecciate it.
Thanks!

Buy a 1000. The 2000 sounds worse than a DSLR and looks it as well.
For someone w.no signature ur awfully hostile, & that is why I do this

It practically doesen´t exists in Argentina, and i heared it can have a lot of problems.
I would kill myself if i managed to get one imported from US and broken in a few months.

There's a lot of great skaters right now without board sponsors. You should ask Louie Lopez or Austyn Gillette to ride for you

I used to have the same idea, I’d wait and build your following instead of just rushing for the people. I’d say a sneaky attack is better than a full on attack. Mine was called Dreams, it was gonna just be a local brand with my friends but we got to ahead of ourselves and we flopped. Best of luck but I’d wait if I were you

You can easily find a VX1000 in São Paulo if you talk to the right people, or you could just talk to someone from ASCO

Starting a Slap thread asking if you're gonna be successful with your board brand with no name is a good start.

Do it for fun not money. If you can supply yourself and friends with boards, and break even by selling a few here and there, Why not?

Get some stickers made and sticker the shit out of everything.

Ayo, one tip I can give you is that skateboards are definitely made out of wood.

I been thinking about doing the same lately. Hearing how someone like Fos started Heroin Skateboards just spray painting boards in his backyard is sort of inspiring. I would wanna call it Psycho Skates as a sort of homage to Vision skateboards.

Exactly. If you make Shalom boards with the Slap logo , I'll buy a board off  you.

If he sets everything manually and maybe do a little color correction here and there in post, then the vx2000 is decent. I've used one for about 5 years before getting a vx1k and vx21k. It's no vx1000 but for youtube and insta it's fine.

If you think you can manage to always break even go for it. I Started my board company 4 years ago we're about to release our 11th graphic. Just let it grow organically and don't over produce product you end up stuck with.

Fuck it, call it Centipede skateboards. Have all the graphics based around 80's arcade games.
My advice, don't start out thinking its a good idea to give all your shit away. Thats the common mistake everyone makes. Oh I'm starting a board brand because Jimmy needs a board sponsor and he rips. If Jimmy wants to support your brand he can pay you trade price or whatever at least to start.

I’m starting a brand soon too. The best thing is to keep a job while starting it up, make sure you get enough to cover all the costs to start up properly. I don’t know the process in your country, but look into it. It could be a good side hustle.

On now I'm inspired to bring back my old skate company Black Tar, new boards coming fresh from China as I type.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house
