Spots with history behind them
« on: February 28, 2019, 05:25:04 AM »
Thought this might be an interesting thread as I know alot of us like to nerd out over spots and shit and some of those spots may have interesting stories/a history behind them. To start it off I'll share a local one, rugged rough full pipe spot up next to the river.

Absolutely monolithic and pictures are deceiving, it's hard as shit to skate - steep, rough bricks make it hard to get speed and it's also relatively slim but still definitely worth a session. The history behind this one is that the North East of the UK always had a mining heritage and these staithes existed so that coal trains above could drop coal into the ships waiting below. You can roughly see where it exists to the left in this old picture:

The mine itself closed in the mid 80s as did most around here and pretty much everything was dismantled, demolished or boarded up with only one of the coal staithes remaining. The structure itself dates back to late 1800s early 1900s.

So yeah share spots talk shit etc.

Does that count as a full pipe?

we refer to it as the full pipe but there is a lip on it that would stop it hypothetically being a full pipe

That's Ronny Callow in the photo right? Big ups Ronny

I finally listened to that podcast on the Love Bowl recently.
https://soundcloud.com/nocoping/episode-1-the-love-bowls
It was kinda weird to hear skateboarding discussed in like a This American Life-style, but overall I really liked it, hope they make more episodes.

Yes i listened to the podcast aswell... Someone should contact some of the most popular architects of cities like barcelona or CPH and ask
them if they would have ever imagined that their work would be used by skaters ...

I posted this in another thread recently.

very neat
There was an interview with TK, when he was a plumber. He got asked if he gets recognized on the job and his response was "No. Plumbin in disguise." Everyone on SLAP thought he said "put him in the sky"

I've always wanted to visit the Balcombe Viaduct:

It's an old train bridge opened in 1842.

Depends what you all define as "history", but I am a big fan of modern architecture and sculptures. I created this instagram where I rant about the topics. Every few posts I try to make connections to skating. I haven't posted on the account for a bit but have been meaning to get on it again.

I have all the skate posts indexed under this hashtag: https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/skatemediaseries

As an example, here's a post about the Welfare Banks, designed by brutalist master, Marcel Breuer.

until the mid 00s every spot in new york was from the 1700s.

all of philadelpha is somehow older than that. 1993 is just about to touch down over there. i like that. very shalom.
