 me and my buddy crazy legs saw Phelps at ripon one time. He pulled up in a rented car solo and was selling stuff out of the back. Somehow Phil Shao got brought up and Jake said about Phil “one great skater, one dead dude” epic quote

Met him at The Bricks after one of the Tampa contests a few years back. Told him I was in school for journalism and wanted to get in Thrasher, asked him how to do it. Threw his arm around me and slurred, “Send me your shit. I’ll read it.” I didn’t, but I always imagined he really would have. He definitely had some kookiness, but no one in skateboarding will ever forget Jake Phelps. RIP.

Mark made a great slow mo hill bomb youtube video of jake. It almost made me cry because I’m taking care of my brothers kid while he’s in prison and she listens to that song.

My first memory of jake was him bombing the high school hill from my car window. I was like 4 maybe. My dad called him a punk fuck. He noticed not and I obviously was impressed. He was an antihero in high school. Jake he was a legend in Boston Hardcore known to fuck shit up a pit monster. He got out of Marblehead and made the impossible possible. He became the ace of spades of skating and had our “devo” perspective. The ultimate punk rocker Built for speed and He’s a lifer. I respect lifers more than any celebrity. RIP

When cause of death hasn’t been released, has it ever turned out to NOT been drugs?

I mean, people often don't release when its suicide. Plus, people shouldn't expect this to be immediately announced. But, I would think this speculation is very premature. This only happened hours ago. Speculating because they haven't released the cause (and coming to conclusions because they didn't release the cause) is pointless.

Honestly rest in peace to this ultimate G. I also spent my time thinking he was whack or some dickhead but when it comes down to it I was flat fucking wrong. Dude loved skating more than almost anyone and stuck with it for forever and was genuinely stoked on the people he crossed paths with who also give a shit about it. I think it's really important now as a community, to realize how much shit we talk, and how much more important it is to support the people who are truly down. Skateboarding can get as commercial as possible and will ultimately still be some fringe freak shit for losers tweekers morons and outcasts. I don't care how whack some pros, insta skaters, or old figureheads are, chances are they're skating and involved in skating because they love it, and that makes them more valuable than any X Y or Z trendy hype skater of the day.
