Phelps was an alien. He was an artifact from another era.

No one goes as hard as those old hardcore dues from the 80s.

All the "hellride" stuff would have been corny if it wasn't 10000% sincere.

No one went for it 100% of the time, all the time like him. It was never turned off because he couldn't turn it off.

Kids listening to Black Flag and running from the cops and skating pools have given way to Reality TV, Nike SB, and the Olympics. It is what it is. That's the natural order of things. That's what happens. But Phelps was a creature from the old order.

Skateboarding will progress. But without Phelps, it will never be the same.

Whatever you may think of him, he was a full on skate rat. One of our own. This is a loss to skateboarding. I'm curious to see what happens next with Thrasher.

Saw Chico’s post on ig and paused—hard to believe. He carved Thrasher and skateboarding as he thought it had to be done; regardless if each of us think he did it in a good or bad way, his decades of influence will be inextricable from skating, for ever. Never met you, but it’d be a lie to say your life never affected mine. RIP dude.

Phelps knew more about skateboarding than probably anyone else on earth, barring perhaps Lance. A lot of skateboarding's past vanishes along with him, which is sad.

Luckily got to see/talk to Phelps around the city, while both of us were lurking/pushing around. He loved humble bragging when he got the chance, but at the same time was down to talk to anyone about skateboarding and it would always end up becoming a pretty cool history lesson of SF skating. RIP to the kookiest legend

On a side note: I wonder what's going to happen with thrasher. Bad timing due to transworld now being done

Damn one second he’s skating with Chico, doing Thrasher radio and the next he’s gone. He was only 56 too. I’m putting my money on a heart attack. Thrasher will never be the same. I’m guessing Burnett is going to take his place which isn’t a bad thing. He was disliked by a lot of people but there’s no denying he’s a legend and the embodiment of skateboarding. RIP.

PS: Please have some respect and don’t make stupid jokes or derail this thread. He touched so many lives and gave skateboarding so much that he deserves every skaters respect.
