who has/had best life in skateboarding?
« on: March 16, 2019, 03:19:23 AM »
Made me think when Phelpher died how awesome his life was. He was around everything that happened and lived skateboarding every day of his life which is every skateboarders dream. (even better than being a pro under pressure of filming and other things)
9/11 was a national tragedy

I'd like to think Rickk.  Quiet, seemed humble, ripped, has/had ownership in some pretty successful companies, seems (From the outside) he has a good eye for talent and treats his riders well.  Never tried to push an image like TNT or The Muska (Those guys are rad in their own right).

far as i can tell there are three who are neck and neck:

phelpers - world record for milking it. r.i.p.

tony hawk - the most famous, most respected, most vertiest, he is living the dream and so is his family. still ripping and putting out video games. recognized all over the world.

rodney mullen - won so many contests but was never a top selling pro. went in to manufacturing, changed the game, and made money on nearly every skateboard sold by world industries and co. still ripping and still getting dwindle money. people who don't skate have no idea who he is.

in a sport where most folks get broke off and smoked before they even take a picture, these dudes went the distance for decades

Koston would be up there. Came up super skilled, winning contests, top video parts. Rode for the best teams during there primes (eS, Girl, Fourstar) made that sweet sweet THPS money. Seemed to be able to navigate sponsorship well in order to get paid. Seems to have travelled all over the world. Now he's just chillin on the Nike retirement contract, and building his sneaker collection. Also started Numbers (which I don't care for) and the Berries (which I also don't care for) so he's diversified, and probably extended his Nike contract due to exposure.

For me I think Keenan Milton had the best life. He always had a huge smile on his face and he was always laughing. Keenan Forever.

Whenever I step foot on my skateboard my life feels best. So all of us who feel it have the best life in skateboarding.

Lindsey Robertson or Ryan Smith. They had to commit the least gnarly tricks and have the most to show for it.

I agree with the dude who said Steezus Christ. He now doesn't have to work a day in his life, has a massive sneaker collection, he didnt make it in skateboarding but still has a higher social status and industry acceptance than most pros.

From the outside, I'd argue Cab got pretty damn lucky. His shoe has been one of the best selling shoes for nearly 30 years. He is not the absolute richest dude in skateboarding, but that shoe probably has allowed him to live a very nice life without the same stress other dudes have had to worry about.

Same man. I’m having a tough time with depression but when I’m skating it all just melts away. Like Phelps said, we’re all lucky to have found it. Thanks for reminding me Ed.

From a monetary standpoint I would say Dyrdek: he was a good skater but never a top talent, and was able to do all kinds of things on the business side to have a lot of success. Some of his choices have made me cringe but he really made the most of his opportunities.

As far as someone who had a long, influential career that I would be proud of if I were him? I’d say Ed Templeton. The guy built an art career and a company while continuing to skate, remained productive into a pretty old age to be pro (he never milked it in my opinion) until his leg injury. He’s also been an advocate for veganism since way back which is cool to me.

are you joking? he's like the second most famous name drop in skater/non-skater conversations by non-skaters, after tony hawk. i can't count the times i had coworkers ask me if i know rodney mullen and how he must be the best skater because he casperslides and stuff.
