I'm finally buying my dream snowboard that I've wanted since I was a kid (GNU skidder) but don't know shit about snowboard gear these days... What bindings and boots should I look at?

I grew up snowboarding in the early 90s so I'm used to very soft jibby boards even on groomed runs and powder and backcountry they feel best to me. So I assume a softer binding would work for me, but I don't know. Also, don't know what the current "trend" is. I've never tried rear entry bindings, are they good? Anything else I should look for? I'm ordering the board online, but I maybe will go look at bindings in person and certainly boots I need to try on. I'm not rich, but rich enough to consider snowboarding as a hobby.

Any advice would be swell.

Most manufacturers make decent bindings and boots these days. Even RIDE, haha ( they had the worst baseless bindings back in the day).

But everything will be stiffer than you remember. Even the soft stuff. But it’s better that way, you’ll have much better response.

Very solid go-tos for boots would be low-end Burtons or 32 lashed, whichever fit your feet better.

I use Rome bindings, but Burton make perfectly good ones in all ranges of stiffness. The ‘freestyle’ is still economical and functional. Missions are a step up.

Unions are OK, but I found you really have to crank on them to get a good fit.

Thanks for posting. Love anything warbington. Love Radiohead too but the song didn’t fit, but that was my only complaint.

Heavy. RIP

Yeah big loss. Not sure where it would be without him being at the start of things. Given its 30 degrees (celsius) here it’ll be a skate for jake tomorrow instead of heading to the snow

RIP Jake Burton

yea, first snowboard was a burton. this season i've got a full time job so my ski bumming days won't be as abundant. definitely can't wait to smash through some trees on at least 1 or 2 heavy storm powder days.

Skipping work tomorrow to hit up copper. Woodward terrain are so much better than anything else.

Any ikon pass holders here in CO? Might do epic next year just to switch it up but Woodward tho.

What’s up with these fish boards people are riding?

Like the legit stubby, swallow tailed boards. Could you ride all mountain with them?

Like I ain’t goin backcountry and I don’t really go to the park, can I just get my surf on with those even if it’s not always fresh powder?

My opinion.  I’ve ridden a couple.

They are amazing in pow for surfy turns, float super well and are easy to ride.  You can stand straight up and don’t have lean back.

They are not good for jumping of any kind with the lack of tail you have no support when you land more on your back foot. Both landing in pow and on more packed snow.   They worked on groomed runs but don’t preform and carve like a board with some tail.

They are sweet as a dedicated pow board that you only bring out when it snows but not as your everyday all around rider.

there seem to be two types of "pow surfer" boards, long and short. the Nitro Cannon seen here is rated well for all-mountain, poor for jibs

What about something like this? I mean, I know what the manufacturer says, but let me put it this way: I can ride any run but I'm probably about one step away from poser as far as snowboarding is concerned and I just like the looks. So is this just dumb?

It will work for powder and hardpack.
It’s a camber board, it should be able to put down some good carves, and it’s longer, wider nose/shorter, narrower tail will let you float in pow.

Which is kind of the rage these days, lots of companies are making these

If you don’t mind not doing switch, and are not interested in spinning or jibbing, it should be fine.

You don’t need a powder board to ride powder. I’ve been to mountains in VT with 2ft of fresh powder on a regular all mountain/ park board. It’s a workout on the rear leg but I wasn’t spending 20+ days riding fresh powder so it would be pointless to invest in a powder board. If you’re not doing 50% or more of your riding on fresh powder then don’t buy one, spend your money on other good equipment and don’t skimp on boots.

My man! Gotta love the perseverance. A rogue admin kooks him into oblivion but does that keep this epic pow surfer down? No way. Even after that public embarrassment my man gets back up on his Roxy Glow 138 takes the training wheels off and busts back in a thread about the best X treme sport.

I gotta give it to you man after that messy focus to come back in here and still act cooler than a group of people for the type of board sport they enjoy is a different type of confidence and I’m all over it.

On wednesdays we wear pink.
