The comment about him talking us through a movie based on his life was spot on.. Yuck

Haha thats what I thought, best way to put it!

What a clown he is, the way he talks about himself, the different phases he has gone through and most of all, the fucking ugly way he skates. FUCK MIKE V.

Are there any Mike V parts that actually contain impressive skating? Like one that could be considered elite and groundbreaking for its time?
Public Domain though, every man and his dog was shaving their head and mimicking his posture, tricks and limp wrist style at the time!

I'm an hour in and I'm loving it (duh)! Seriously, compare this to the 10/10 episode and Mike V looks like a fucking Pulitzer Prize winner. No doubt he's done some kooky things and gone through a tonne of weird phases BUT (and despite his ego) I bet he loves skateboarding more than most.
People will circle jerk 10/10 for a few frontside ollies he did in the 80s and defend his right to have still not learnt any actual adult life lessons in over 30 years because of it and yet they are so quick to call out Mike V. I would argue that Mike V is easily more of a "legend" in skating than Jesse will ever be.
No, he wasn't Natas or Gonz but he did contribute a lot to the birth of street skating whether you like it or not. And yes, he burned through 1078 companies during his time but it doesn't look like Street Plant is really going anyway these days; they have a solid customer base and it's basically the definition of "core" no? Who else is straight up running DIY companies out of their garage?
I'll probably just broken record on through this thread but I think the important thing I got from this is that I really need to put my money where my mouth is, suck up the international shipping, and give him some of my hard earned next time I need some new boards.

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

At least:

The guy who runs $lave, whose name escapes me at this moment (probably due to my brain going completely dead from listening to Mike V's auto-fellatio)
Lucero
The owners of umpteen local brands, both wack and cool

I started at around where he gets on powell and am now about 2/5 hours in & so far this shit is 80s skate nerd gold.

I normally avoid this show because of the hosts, but just in terms of rad stories about legendary pros and behind the scenes detailing of seminal skate events in my 80s childhood, this episode is amazing.

I think they purposely made it the longest one yet because of when I asked Brink tips for the Nine Club and he said editing/they are too long. Then this 5 hour monstrosity comes up. Haha. Anyways Mike V is ok in my book.

If you've ever slapped a fisheye on your phone and thought "I'll film a fun two minutes with my friends real quick at XXX spot/place" and tried the result is disappointing almost all the time.  Mike V making a significant video part in a session, granted that several folks were doing that, is still insane.  The standards have changed and when that shit came out it is like a single person el toro session coming out now.  Dude may be a bit diluted but 80s skating seems to kinda do that to you.  Ever seen Gonz's youtube channel?  10 minute interview would kook skateboarding's prodigal son for life.

First half was awesome. Gets a little weird toward the second part. Dude is definitely a narcissist. Great skating though, and greatest hits.

Within the first 30 seconds I learned I've been pronouncing his name wrong all these years
One of my childhood friends allways called him Mike valley and I noticed it had an extra L and I asked him, “wouldn’t it be Val-uh-lee” and from then on, that’s how we said it.

It was years before I heard everyone start calling him vuh-lay-lee.

"It wasn't about being accepted, I didn't care about the acceptance" (paraphrased)
Yeah right Mike, your whole damn career/life was one big battle for acceptance and fitting in, you ain't fooling anyone. That shit mattered to you, hell it probably still does. And as mentioned earlier dude sure loves patting himself on the back.

With that said Mike is one hell of a story teller, I'm not all the way done yet but I've enjoyed it so far. My high school upbringing also involved getting into punk and trying to fit in to that whole scene while discovering skateboarding at the same time as well, real similar to Mike's story, so I was sucked in right away.
Him along with Bryan Herman have been the best story tellers so far in my opinion; stories that keep you interested and wanting to hear more instead of pausing it to check something else every couple minutes.

I enjoyed it a lot. He’s pretty eloquent which made it easy to follow and remain interested, as others already said. Might support Street Plant one of these days...

You must be kidding.

Start with Public Domain, which Mark Gonzales referred to as the most influential part he's ever seen.

Public Domain, rubbish heap, speed freaks were dope. I actually really like his suburban diners part. As mentioned before, when pd came out, everyone wanted that style. I think every other kid had that board here. When rubbish heap came out, I had both the elephant and barnyard decks. But also, then Frankie Hill,  Jason Lee, Jeremy Klein were around and I shifted toward them. Then to Guy, Rudy and so on. I was a total Frankie style stealer

I ended up liking his story telling better than a lot of other previous guests.

Although, he clearly isolated his peak/cool moments, especially in the 80's and then skipped over the whole phase where everyone hated him in 3 phrases.

I understand why, but c'mon Mike.
The '80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Yeah that’s how I’ve felt. It’s like the skateboarding version of Karl Ove Knausgaard. No way all the details from that long ago can be correct but the inisights and emotions are interesting to listen to.
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.

I started skateboarding because I was over hockey and all the kids I played hockey with. Stupid manstream jock kids doing what their parents wanted.  I watch one of my first 411s  and he's in there playing the sport I was trying to escape. I pretty much wrote him off after this, then he started fighting jump ramps a few years later.

he had kind of a Donger thing going on back then. big kickflips and ollies. granted, we hated Donger at the time for being too basic and repetitive but it would've been interesting to see an alternative Mike V path where he didn't rely so heavily on goalie skating.

I can see him "pitching" this tragedy: It'll be EXACTLY like Mark Gonzales' part in Video Daze but more hesh!
