KOTR dusted?
« on: May 01, 2019, 10:10:33 AM »
Andy Roy was a cohost of KOTR. On his Nine Club episode he mentions that Vice is not continuing to produce the show. Will Thrasher take back KOTR or is it done forever? The show lost its main host but with Jakes passing I feel that KOTR needs to continue more than ever. I like how NBDs would be put in the book that progress skateboarding if they get landed. I always loved the idea for the show even though the Vice production of it was pretty corny. Does anyone know the future of KOTR?

There was a decently long gap of time between the original KOTRs to when it was picked up by VICE so could just be it wasn’t worth doing/ hard to do until something like Viceland came along. I’m sure it’d be way less appealing to a lot of teams to agree to do it knowing it won’t be on actual TV and go straight to a website that over pumps content out. Who knows. It was cool back in the day how they did it and I’d watch if they did it the old school way but I kinda doubt they’ll do it.
hopefully ty evans was there to film him laying on the ground in HD

I dont think anything from KOTR the last few years is progressing skateboarding.  Maybe progressing my distaste for evan smith.

Played out a long time ago. It turned into Jackass, but with slightly more skateboarding.

Even though I don't watch KOTR, in an odd way I'm sad that the Olympics may take over defining the public's concept of skateboarding.

it would be nice if vice treated it more like fueltv than mtv. people are watching it for the skateboarding.  the "epic" shit only works if its used sparingly, not beaten with a horse.  same kind of idea with what happened to OIAM-- the reality show elements were interesting but the skateboarding is why people keep coming back.

i fucking miss fuel tv. the best was when they didn't have actual programming for a time block and they just threw on a random skate video.

Wasn't it around this time, they were doing KOTR? or maybe beginning of last year? It came out in July 2018 on Vice it looks like.

Unless they've moved it to end of summer, beginning of Fall, it looks like it's completely dust.

If they were to revive it, I think it would be a cool if they did more trick challenges, and less antics. Not a fan of turd eating, or bombing dumps in shoes even. Piss drinking is definitely not chill either. Maybe instead give budget limits, like try to pull this shit off on a Foundation budget.

dude I was talking about this the other day. I miss fuel tv so much. Friday night skate at 8 was the best. And I remember every Thursday I’d come home from school (5th or 6th grade) and cataclysmic abyss would be on. Good times.

True. It was cool when they visited pros on the first season, it wasn't cool when they only visited pros everyday on the second season.

Remember the early ones where it was super out there trick challenges and categories, like flat ground, bank, wallride challenges?  I remember getting stoked to think that someone was doing like a flat ground switch kickflip backside 360.

On paper it has the potential to be the best contest for skateboarding/skateboarders.
A skateboard style scavenger hunt across America for a week or so.
It is hands down my fav contest of all time... just needs less piss and shit and make outs.

The early ones, pre-vice were pretty sick. Who could forget this?

Yep.

I know what you mean, but for the skaters that do have likeable personalities, I really enjoyed it.  Of course it's annoying when someone you like to watch skate, or maybe don't like to start with, happens to have an extra over-the-top annoying or childish persona on the show- reducing skateboarding to that shit.  But it's kinda just putting it all out there, and who is actually cool shines through.  I feel like I really got to get a feel for some of the current top names- even though they're not the skaters I normally gravitate towards watching parts for, it was fun seeing how far they could push the limit in their skating, and seeing their personalities jive.  Bonus, it was skate content my gf actually enjoyed watching with me, and has taught her some skate stuff in the same way that early THPS ingrained it in me.

Shit and piss challenges need to go down the drain though, for sure.

I like KOTR in all it's many forms. I'm bummed there isn't one this year even though last year was a literal shitshow. I don't see why Thrasher can't make a web series that's sort of in the middle of the hour long vids they used to put out and the hour long weekly show that Viceland aired. I guess there's always next year.
them cats are out getting mashed up to jungle, he's out mashing up jungle cats. it's just not gonna work.

I think that even if there’s show kotr can still go on.
Someone could make it a public event via social media. Imagine thrasher make a prize and any one with a phone could complete in this giant scavenger hunt and win some crap at the end and flow.

It would be like one in a million meets kotr

KOTR on Vice failed because it was ran like a 13 year old was in charge. Every weird challenge wasn't interesting, it was just bad. "shit in someones mouth, butt chug a Monstertm, use a bad word in front of a mom".

KOTR used to feel like a larger version of every summer day i had at the skatepark when i was 13. Hanging out with my friends, doing stupid shit, but skating all day every day. Paying someone $5 to eat the cheeseburger we found in the trash, yeah, of course. But also trying stuff that we had never done. There was always a "you think you could kickflip over that?" that would be the stuff of legends by the next summer.

Yeah, KOTR sticks out way too much in the Viceland line-up. Most of their shows is cool interesting hipsters doing/talking about cool interesting things, and then you cut into a bunch of dorks eating poo. On 2004 MTV it'd be a hit for sure though.

Hopefully it isn't completely done, it's always been pretty much my favorite skate content to watch. If Vice still owns the production rights to it, then things could be complicated.

Vice as whole has failed though because ''bringing millenials back to tv'' is just a stupid idea from the start

A bunch of males doing a physical thing is anathema to current mainstream culture, unless they are in drag, fictitious, or being paid a lot. Vice pushed the image even more in this fratbro direction, not surprised or sorry they are out.

There is no implied bagging on Rupaul's Dragrace in this post.

The episodes when they would meet up with a pro, muska and others, were good.

The episodes when they force themselves on a re-elect year old and his mini ramp were cringey

those intro's to KOTR where those punk dudes are sliding in mud hills.....? that was me and a few of my friends in Carbondale, CO 03'.

I met a bunch of the crews it was fun, living in the CO they've got a lot of talent, maybe it's snowboarding or plethora of pools/parks.

KOTR lost it's steam after Zero won the 3rd time, if anything they should go back to basics and DIY the whole thing.
