I don’t know who it is but either him or people at Powell are convinced everything he does is super interesting. Like multiple lines of 5+ tricks. Multiple extended shots of him getting props for relatively lame tricks. Him taking the time to explain what a “Satan Spin” is. Multiple times we see his many attempts at tricks. Do it once with the big handrail.

No one needs to see how hard it was for him to do his wiggly dark slide deal at -5 mph. That’s a throwaway. Same with his ender. That’s a mid-part filler trick, I don’t care how hard it actually is.

Pushing while grinding a handrail is impressive but it looks dumb. I hated a few of his tricks a lot.

It’s a shame because he does a few things that are innovative and sick but they just get lost in the boring stuff.

Also if he’s gonna wear a helmet all the time shouldn’t he wear knee pads when skating very? Pick a lane man.

Overall it was what I expected, some rad shit and a lot of insufferable shit.

Andy Anderson is not unlike Richie Jackson. Andy obviously a lot more skilled on a skateboard but it's the same sorta shit. Everything's a fucking gimmick. Even his look is a gimmick. Andy's rise reminds me alot of Richie Jacksons. Andy's career will last longer no doubt as he's actually compotent behind all the uniqueness. but a lot of his backing and fandom gotta come from the same places Richies did. Redditors and facebooks users who've never even touched foot on a Facebook and only know of it from when something goes "viral". Like I swear I saw more Richie Jackson footage on random ass normie Facebook pages than i did anywhere else. I can only assume Andy gets similar treatment between his trick selection and the helmet. Redditors boomers and mom's absolutely love that fucking helmet.

I think to your point, his sponsors don't do him a ton of favors in presenting his skating in a way that doesn't alienate him from the core skateboarding audience. Powell Peralta encourages him to do these technically difficult, but aesthetically awful tricks and presents them as if he's Danny Way in the DC Video. Then they'll  give him full reign to design his own convoluted board shape and can sell them at $35 higher price point than the other riders on the team. I don't think I've ever seen a rider have this much power over a company they don't have a financial stake in since Bam at Element.

It makes me wonder if he rode for another team that was willing to tell him 'No', he would be much more popular. There have been a ton of kooky people that have been hugely popular and respected in skating precisely because their sponsors knew how to hide it.

Exactly. And maybe Powell knows what they’re doing at least in terms of catering to their market of children and cargo short dads. But it’s not doing his eventual legacy any favors. The guy could definitely put out a great part - something like a Louie Bartletta or even an Albert Nyberg part. But I don’t see it happening.

I thought this was a really well-done interview on Hawk vs Wolf.  Has some funny and vulnerable times, and doesn’t dwell too much on what’s been covered in other interviews.

https://youtu.be/guKkJ8MhLFw?si=RHCApkWeFKwq1iHv

One thing that struck me was Andy being stoked that Oski made the Olympics when he did. He sincerely cared about creative skating being showcased, and he was fine if it wasn’t him. But he just wanted to make sure that that aspect was shown to the world.

Ellis doesn’t go overboard either, it’s about as well balanced as it gets

We can solve this once and for all:

kook
/ko͞ok/
nouninformal•North American
noun: kook; plural noun: kooks

    a crazy or eccentric person.

Origin
1960s: probably from cuckoo.

He markets himself as eccentric and doing things like wearing a helmet even if it was not widely socially accepted. So yes, he is a kook and we don't have to be derogatory to say as much, if it makes us feel better.

Skateboarders as a whole are kooks to the rest of society, so it is perhaps all relative.

I wouldn’t mind him if he didn’t talk about his stupid freestyle tricks like it was fucking quantum physics. Dudes the Neal degrasse-Tyson of skateboarding with his smugness about this shit. Plus his girlfriend is too hot for him and nerds shouldn’t get the girls.

Sounds a bit like gate keeping and wanting less diversity in skateboarding. Nerds have their place in it too. Tony Hawk for example.

If they put cameras in Max Palmer's (or Gustav or Roller Surfer or whatever) face like they do && and he skated with Nka he'd probably seem kooky.

He’s not really my thing, although some of his tricks are really fucking rad. I’ll say not a kook, because doing illegal tricks isn’t really a reason to call someone a kook.

I love Andy he does his own thing and is nice from what I hear. Just nerds out on skateboarding

Only issue I ever had with him is his PR about I am risking my life for you all. Let's be honest that Jermey Wray gap is really risking your life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEZsU404eNk
