Does your city/town have a DIY spot?
« on: June 19, 2019, 06:11:31 AM »
I want to know. Is it big/small? Social media allowed or a no go? I know there are a plethora of diy spots and parks, some have their own insta/Facebook, some don’t. Some are a private hidden secret and some are for the public. Do YOU have one?

We had two different ones. Same group of guys were responsible for making both. The guy that runs the indoor park in town was responsible for getting the first one reported, and it is rumored that it is the same story for the second one. Our scene really sucks.

closest one to me, "the moon", in a bit of a state at the minute due to getting word that the spot was going to be torn down but as it stands that was over a year ago and the only thing thats been done is a trench dug out considerably out the way of the actual spot so who knows.

We have a really big pool way out in the woods.  We get a lot of snow.  Every spring a bunch of the older gnarly guys rent a gas powered generator to drain it and everyone helps clear out all the tree limbs and junk that fall into it during the fall/winter.  If you don't help out, you are basically not allowed to skate it.

A couple guys and myself started building one in my city. Nothing to crazy as of now quarter spine and ledge. It’s a small spot. Not a lot of people know about it maybe less than 10. I’m afraid if it blows up young kids will fuck it up. At this point it’s always swept always clean despite trash being all around it from public dumping off a secluded road. I worry if it got more attention if it would get fucked up or the city fuck it up. But I also think it would be tight if more people skated it and help build than the 3 or 4 of us that has so far. Plus extra money plus the extra hands for work could make it better faster

Edit. Just wanna say I’m stoked you made a diy thread. I’ve been looking at the one in the travel section but it’s kinda stagnant and there’s no other diy threads for tips pics etc

I’ve been wanting to build one for a minuet but no places near me yet. I’m actually moving and there’s this abandoned tennis court down the street that could be made into a diy spot.

tried to build a quick ledge manny pad combo at a shitty scooter park the cops waited till someone skated it and fined everyone that skated the object. that was less then 24 hours after the cement dried, fuck the city of Lantana, greedy cocksmokers!

Situations like this always bum me out. It sucks when we go out and improve something and the city takes it down.

However, if you are actually building in a park (and not some semi-hidden abandoned piece of property), why not just work with the city?

My city sucks, but I went to a parks and rec committee meeting and the committee was pretty open to my suggestions. Getting the city to be stoked on renovations wasn't all that hard, the biggest problem was always "where do we get the money to improve the park?"

Our main DIY has been pretty well documented and posted about a few times on here over the years. It's called "The Wig" and after 4.5 years of being in existence, it's about to be torn down any day now to make room for some apartments/condos. It's quite unfortunate because The Wig has really unified the skate community here and helped it grow to the biggest it has ever been as well as give many inner-city youth exposure and access to skating. Its significance to Detroit skateboarding's past and future cannot be overstated. Slap Pal StabMasterArson has been unanimously voted the mayor of the Wig and is responsible for its existence as well as many other cool things in Detroit skateboarding. I don't think he's been posting/coming on Slap much in recent weeks though.

This video covers the general story of Detroit's DIY scene/spots, including a bit about the Wig

Yes, we have 2 in the Kansas City area.

Both city sanctioned, both totally sweet.  Builds are a good time and people are nice.  No one vibes you out if you are skating and haven't helped build before...just pitch in some way for the next one (labor, water, pizza, beer, whatever).
People around here are nice.

Syracuse has always had a rad DIY scene since the 80s hardcore scene, so I'm not suprised 15 dudes made that sick DIY.

It's not a hard and fast rule.  Nobody gets kicked out or anything, but if you don't help with the clean up, it's expected to bring beers, food, water, etc.

Mine doesn’t.  I’d love to make one but I’d need another person or two to help, there’s no way I’m doing that by myself.

Got a DIY park less then a mile from my apartment :)

Here’s a lil edit I made to show off the new additions from a few weeks ago. This has been a DIY spot since 2010, starting from a couple wooden benches in an abandon tennis court. The city is actually pretty cool about it, as long as we don’t let it get trashed and run down, which sorta happened a couple years back. We’re getting a proper park built in our town too via a Tony Hawk Foundation grant, and through that process I’ve spoken to a bunch of city/park commissioners who brought up how important it was for this park to NOT effect the DIY spot.

on the subject of DIY spots, i've always been interested in how certain spots get a name/moniker. For example ours is called "the moon" as there's a bunch of craters and shit there, whereas the one further afield is just named "wasteland v2" or chilli road as it's the second iteration of a diy spot and the street name is chillingham. stuff like snatch, parasite, lower bobs etc.

Yes, 2 and you can dream it up and lay it all out by yourself.  Once it's ready to go you just call in the Cavalry. I wish I knew how KC does it, but I'm just not that organized.  Anyway, a tennis court is the way to go for sure. Good concrete. Build where you can though. You don't even need a slab if you want a bowl.

OKC - 10 Penn (NW 10th and Pennslyvania) named after the location. The Grindline guys were scared of the "zombies". The regulars suck, but so do the regulars at the municipal skateparks. I prefer the street people to children myself. Instagram hashtag #make10penngreatagain

Our other DIY is on a tennis court. It's called the Licoln Courts because it's by Lincoln Blvd. That's all the direction you're getting. I want to keep Lincoln from being trashed up and blown out by skatepark types. They come, leave trash, grafitti something, break something else, and maybe take something. They are better off at municipal parks. It is open. We don't kick people out. I'm just not telling anyone who asks where it is. If you skate OKC you should already know where it is. If you don't, then skate more. Anyway, this may be a clip.

Here in Philly, all of our parks are DIY spots to some extent, for better or worse (except Paines).

I was in okc a few weeks ago and had my board with me. I stopped by 10 penn  to skate and kill time. I had a pretty dope time. I definitely would want to go back again. It gave me ideas for the diy in my city.  But like you said I’m afraid of to many people knowing or things will get fucked up or taken etc.
