My aim is to have a little furniture and other bullshit as possible. Collecting it is pretty gangsta, though.

I worked for a office/school/home furniture business. I did the mounting/fitting for customers. We sell alot of scandinavian, french and italian designer furniture. Often costs more then most peoples car, for just a sofa. What I can say is that you pay 90% for the brand, and quality is often questionable, with questionable solutions. I once delivered a 4 person seater in gold colored velour and gold legs. Price? 25k. And the legs was mounted with 4 small wood screws  ::)

Anyway... I like clean, basic designs. Love to mix veneers, like zebrano wood with more flashy colors like orange for example.

I work for a furniture company. I could't think about it any less.

That being said, I just bought a house and enjoy the discount on this highly over priced shit.

Into mid-century stuff.  I'm 46 so I've been collecting for 20 years, but I'm also cheap - and good at vintage finds.  That said, 10-15 years ago was much better for finding deals than now.  It's been 5 years since I have picked up anything for the house.

I like Eames.  I have:
  - a pair of walnut LCW chairs that I picked up with a designer discount around 2005.
  - a 1960s ash CTW that I picked up at a vintage store for $35
  - a couple vintage fiberglass armchairs from craigslist - one with a rocker base and one with an H base
  - 6 current plastic side chairs with H bases - I think it was $500 for all 6  on craigslist
  - at my office I have 6 plastic arm chairs with eiffel bases - $600 for all 6

I'm also a bit into LeCorbusier.  I have two LC3 Grande armchairs and a loveseat.  They are vintage 1960s and have some small cat scratches in them.  I picked the set up around 8 years ago for $425 at a vintage shop.  After living with them for this time, I have considered selling them.  They aren't as comfortable as I'd like and they have a lot of value.  I could probably sell the full set and buy a more comfortable setup that would make me happier.    I also have an Italian made knockoff LC4 that after 18 years is starting to show it's wear.  That is a super comfortable chair.  Love it.

Previous to this I had a nice (and comfortable) set of vintage loveseats that were upholstered white.  Awesome before kids.  They lasted until about two years after kids.  Add in the dog and they got super filthy.  They are currently stored in my crawl space to maybe be reupholstered some day.   Sitting next to them is a pair of Saarinen Executive chairs that need the same treatment.

Old living room setup, three days after move in which is why there is no art on the walls yet.

No longer have the Barcelona chair or bench, or the Noguchi table (glass is leaning up against the wall here), and the Nelson bench is at my office.

I have a few Chinese knockoffs - which I would recommend avoiding. In 2006-2007 I had an online store selling them.  Most of the stuff was not that great and some was utter garbage.  The first shipping container I received was from one factory and I was not impressed.  I kept the store up and after selling through most of that I ordered another container from another factory.  It was mostly better, but still pretty suspect.  I didn't feel good about selling much of it - although there were a few standouts that were nice.  I chose to shut it down even though I was still making some money.    I still have in use a Womb Chair, an Eileen Gray table, a couple Arco lamps, and an Eames side table.

Then I have quite a few vintage teak pieces (tables, credenza, desk) that aren't any particular famous design but do make me happy.

The only thing I ever really wanted and could probably never find/afford is a Percival Lafer sofa and one of his armchairs. They're so grotesque and beautiful.

I've had a bunch of mid-century things in the past, some really nice, and some not so much, but now I'm more interested in really antique furniture. Like old farmhouse stuff especially. Which means I'll just continue to use the shitty ikea furniture that came with my apartment until I win the lottery.

That living room looks like you could do a lot of blow in there. I love it.

Ive got a Barcelona chair at work and people are constantly trying to buy it from us but we’re not a furniture store.

I've said this in another thread, but I work for a company where we move elderly people into retirement communities, and every time we have to downsize them. I drive a 24 foot truck and it's usually about half full of stuff that I can either take to consignment stores or donation centers. I mean really nice and expensive stuff, but those places are crazy picky about what they'll take. Most of the time I either just end up keeping it myself or going to the dump to get rid of it. On the bright side my house is very well furnished by high quality furniture, and it usually gets rotated by a new piece pretty quick.

TLDR. Furniture is ridiculously overpriced, and you will never get back what you paid for it.

I'm into MCM and have collected a few things. Not pics of my actual furniture obviously.
Have one of these I inherited from my grandparents.

Got these Arne Wahl Iversen designed night stands for $25 each at a thrift store.

Paul McCobb Planner Group coffee table for $100 from a garage sale.

1970s Danish dresser from Goodwill for $40

What I would like...
Arne Vodder slide top desk

Drexel Declaration dresser or any Declaration line piece with the alibaster pulls

a number of Adrian Pearsall sofas...

saarinen womb chair

so many more.
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.
R.I.P Rusty. One of us.

Been thinking about buying a Varier Variable Balans kneeling chair. Weird thing is that I've only been thinking of doing so recently despite having seen it on The Simpsons (Lisa's chair) countless times many years ago. Apparently it allows for less pressure on the hips, which might in turn be beneficial for skating. Not sure how comfortable I'll be in a kneeling position but it's worth a try at some point.

Many people are of the opinion that bamboo furniture is the best option as far as outdoor furniture is concerned. The question however is as to whether or not bamboo is the best option for indoor furniture as well. Check this site for more details.

ohhh, that sounds like a good thread. Visited the vitra museum this year and saw all the good stuff (including Verner Pantons Fantasy Landscape). I actually enjoy design museums a lot, especially with Danish furniture.

My girlfriend and I don't really collect or have a speical style. It's kind of a mix of new and old, original and fake, cheap and (kind of) expensive. Some more famous chairs from Thonet, Eiermann or Eames meet Hay, Ikea and old GDR furniture. We have some no name scandinavian mid century furniture that fits nicely into the apartment. It's nothing special compared to other people, but it's a good start. Maybe I'll post some pics later.
For the next apartment I'm planning to get the vitsoe 606 game started. Love that stuff.

Just bought my first house a few months ago. I was able to get some nice granite tables from craigslist/offerup.  They compliment my countertops pretty nice and since I have wood floors I figured all wood tables would be too much. But I did buy a new couch. Nothing super fancy but it is pretty nice. Leather recliner.

Made this chair 18 years ago. Got the seat scrapping at Pier 1. Was interested in the angles of a lounge chair at the time. Will never build another chair again. It was fun at the time though...

Big fan of industrial and furniture design. Not really knowledgeable on the topic as a whole, and vaguely familiar with the big names of those industries. I save a lot of photos for reference and enjoy looking at nicely designed spaces. I know MCM is trendy, but it does seem like those past design styles got it right. When I compare that, to which I assume was a common design style back then, to how current furniture looks it seems to me that we've regressed.

Hopefully buying a home sometime this year, and have some idea of what I'd like the spot to look like. But I'm pretty frugal so it will be interesting to see what happens. With that frugality, I like building stuff and would likely go that route with a lot of the items in this home. Currently have built a couple benches, and a desk for my apartment. Looking forward to building some shelving in the future.

Build this Nelson bench earlier this year out of pine. Not the best wood, but it was more of a spontaneous project and something to do. Ended up with four of them because once you're set up to make the cuts, you might as well make a few. Currently it just holds plants, but eventually once I'm in a different space it will act as a coffee table most likely.

^^^^nice work.

How did you cut the grooves?

Thanks! It worked out pretty good. Definitely some small issues, but from a distance you can't tell. I could see myself making another in the future out of some nicer wood.

To cut the grooves, I used a dado blade which makes it pretty simple, albeit terrifying to use. So you would set the width of the dado to match with width of the slots. From there, made a little jig that had a notch which allowed for the repeated cuts to be made easily and accurately. Similar to this video. https://youtu.be/Uc1iS30Wg6Y?t=89 Overall it's more simple than it looks. If you don't have a dado/table saw, I've seen people use a chop saw to cut the same grooves, but it's much slower and requires a fair amount of cleanup time.

So I’m familiar with Eams and vintage Ikea but I am mostly a furniture noob. So I have a few questions...

1. Kinda vague but where do you go to learn about this stuff? One guy posted a photo of 1970s Danish furniture, like how the hell did he know when and where it’s from?

2. Where do you guys go to buy this stuff? Is it mostly thrift, consignment, and eBay...or are there specific places?

3. Also mid century modern is cool, but it’s become a pretty cliche “new money millennial” style of furniture. So what other styles are there? (I guess an extension of question 1)

I used to like finding free pieces and refinish and reupholster them and sell them at the consignment shops. There used to be so many consignment shops

I learned everything from these guys on PBS back in the mid to late 90's

Happy to see that they have a new show. I liked and subscribed

I have a few good pieces nothing to brag about

I have an eames LCW chair from 1946 in great condition, a mix and match dining chair set
That consists  of a thonet chair, 2 roland rainer P7 chairs, a schuster chair, and some random 1969ies vintage chairs...
a danish teak sideboard.

I really want to buy a big USM haller sideboard.
