Hipster tendencies
« on: September 08, 2019, 07:36:48 AM »
I like buying shoes that I never see anyone in my local area wearing.
I used to collect vinyl.
When I drank alcohol I was about “interesting” or dark beers.
For years in my 20s I drank my coffee black.
What’s some bullshit hipster tendencies you have?

I don't even know what hipster means really. I buy tonnes of vinyl, because I like having music in it's most tangible format and I dj. Didn't know that was a 'hipster' tendency. What about buying digital?

You all confuse me.
People seem to throw the word at everything now. Explain please.

I probably didn’t listen to a single record all the way through more than once out of the 50 or so records I had.
They all sit in storage now. I really liked seeing large album art.

Just thought of another one, I used to go to bookstores for fun.
I once was in a skateshop and thought about buying a Quasi board.
I do kind of like quasi too.

The only thing that is a hipster tendency is giving a shit about what hipsters think.

Otherwise they are just your own preferences.

Speaking of butts and hips I got yet another one ... as of about two years ago, I wear real belts instead of shoe lace belts.

Yeah but for the sake of this game...

In that case, mine would be pride in obscure knowledge about lesser known old skate videos--very much the same way people brag about obscure music knowledge (of which I also have plenty).

Something like "The first Hall and Oates song used on a skate video was 'I Can't Go For That' in the Huy Lee section of Clout Skateboards's 1994 video All Soul, No Payroll."

Drinking exotic specialty beers and craft beer.

I am pretty picky about the coffee I buy. I grind it myself before I brew it in my Italian semi-automatic espresso machine.

I like to play records on a nice vintage record player (my girlfriend's). If I had money I think I'd buy records too.

I despise hipsters.

being from a middle class background and having nice things, but being constantly broke, because I don't want to work much.

My girlfriend is a designer, vegan and likes to think she's a feminist. We sometimes enjoy artsy films together.

Occasionally I go to openings of art shows with artist friends. At these events I pretend I don't care, but really I am pretty initimidated by the weird social atmosphere there.

I'm afraid that answer is not unacceptable. Pedantic esotericism is only a hipster trait if the class of information concerned isn't actually esoteric, but rather the variant manifestation of an accepted mainstream preoccupation such as popular music. Skateboard knowledge of the type you are describing has absolutely no value as social currency except to others such as yourself, and as such it falls under nerdery rather than hipsterism.
Now I must watch Balance in a World of Chaos, thank you very much.

Damn. I thought I'd told the hipsters.

I just watched Balance a week or two ago and was impressed by two things:
1. The quality of the skating (some damn good stuff in there).
2. The fact that in that time period, you could just be a guy with a video camera (and a few connections) and film people and put out a video. I don't think Danny Minnick got sued by any companies for poaching footage (i.e. Tom Penny or Pat Duffy stuff). Though he does get yelled at in the credits.

I buy Nescafé instant coffee and prefer it over anything else. My laptop is a hand-me-down Dell from a friend’s brother who works in IT. All of my music is digital, and I listen to it on my iPod that was picked from an electronic recycle dump. Am I a hipster?

I hate many bands mainly due to their fan base without even giving their music an honest listen.

That's not a hipster characteristic (if so, then generations of working stiffs from all cultures are just being pretentious).

Oatmilk in your coffee—now that's some hipster shit.

I agree. I like my coffee black and will try most dark beers, but that's just the kind of beer I like.

I drink cold brew
I collect watches
I have a beard
I get stoked on Japanese denim
I eat vegan food
I have tattoos (none that really show outside of my clothes so I guess not too hipster)
I have a vinyl collection (albeit I haven't added anything to it in years)

I like craft beer but hate most IPA so that kinda balance me out right? RIGHT?

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

He's right, though. "Hipsters" today are 28 year old marketing interns that just got a place in nyc's chinatown trying to find the funniest tiktok accounts. Red wings, fixies, vinyl, deadstock sneakers, raw demin, american spirits, blablabla - has just defused into normal culture
