I usually keep my front foot pretty close to the tail, not the nose, but definitely hang it off. What helped me learn them was when I figured out the back foot position. Put it right in the middle, maybe even with the toes hanging off a bit. Apparently others have a different technique then me, but mine works for me, but I kind of rip it around with my back foot, and flick it with the front foot. I let each leg do a different part of the trick, one does the shove it, the other does the flip. I always end up doing a bit of the crosslegged action too, if that makes any sense...
