It’s a weird shape in that I loved it on day 1, was mildly ambivalent on day 2 then switched the Thunders for some Venture 5.6 and now I love it again haha

Main every day setup:
Baker 8.475
Venture 5.8
Bones STF 54mm
Random assortment of bearings
1 inch Allen

Techy flatground fuck around setup
Toy machine 7.75
Indy 129s with bones hard tops and Indy aftermarket barrel bottoms
Spit F4 54mm
Random assortment of bearings
1 inch Phillips

Been hyped on Photosynthesis and Yeah Right lately and all they skated in that video were 7.5-7.75s, so that inspired me to set up another 7.75 board just to mess around on. First toy machine ever too; feels good; nice n round n flat.

Those were the days.  I used to think dudes who skated 8s just had to skate Vert.  Why else would anyone ride a tank like that??

It’s crazy watching Photosynthesis and thinking that they were all pretty much riding 7.5s-7.75s. Wenning skated a 7.5 x 31.25 for pretty much his whole part. Hell, Kalis was on a 7.4 for a lot of his part, pretty crazy times.
Gonna try to start skating the 7.75 more often and maybe try to slowly transition it into my everyday board. All I ever really skate these days is flatground and the occasional ledge or manny pad anyways, so I got to thinking “do I really need to be skating an 8.475 these days?” It just makes sense to size down. Easier to flip n throw around, less strength needed to flick, etc.  Worst case scenario if I’m just not digging the 7.75 I’ll just go back to the baker 8.475 and just use the 7.75 for when I want to learn some weird double flip variation or something hah.

nice, my first session in it was frustrating due to nollie ghost pop, but once I started skating it like it was 91 (quick shove it before nollie tricks) I started to really enjoy it!
I have mine on 56mm wheels and ace 44s, I’m guessing the thunders stretched the wheelbase out too much?

I remember hearing rumbling that some pros rode boards bigger than 8, Arto was the only guy who people mentioned rode 8.5 boards. Back then I still thought pros only rode their own boards.

Haha, for sure (the 91 comment)

The Thunders actually felt good but we’re a little too low and the back truck was hot rodding a little (axles are 8.5 whereas the Ventures are 8.25), which I didn’t like. The Ventures actually push the wb out a little further and are taller so the pop feels better for me.

Overall it reminds me of a slimmed out Dane1 I think

I rode 7.75s and 54mm wheels thinking I was Matt Reason in 96, my friend rode an 8” and I told him he was overdoing it 😂

This is too real. I remember this one dude I know had an 8.5" in 1996/97 and the fact that they even made one was mind blowing to us all. I also think a part of my dislike of big wheels comes from seeing them on 7.5"-7.75" boards, though I am finally getting over that (sort of).

Matt Reason made me love the look of big wheels though, I even had his physics wheel ... which was ridics because it was bigger than Mike Frazier’s wheel. Well it seemed to work for him!

Honestly if I never found slap I’d still be rocking 7.75s with 54mm wheels, I skated that size for a good 15 or so years. Saw a older guy at my local getting back into skating on his old 7.5 krooked and it just looked so cramped ...

So I couldn’t get down with my aces for some reason. They turned great, especially with the riptides. My pop just was so fucked. They just felt odd to me. I tried a few sessions, gave em a shot but just wasn’t feeling them or having fun. Kinda bummed. Still kept them on the other deck, so maybe i'll try again in the future.

Got some ventures for the first time, we’ll see. If these don’t work I’m just going back to indys and call it a day.

I will admit 54mm wheels do look pretty wacky and comical on a 7.75 with some 129s but 54mm wheels is what I’ve been on for a decade now so I wanted to stay close to what I’m used to especially since it’s already such a drastic jump in board size as it is; and plus its the only spare wheels I had laying around too.

Ok

7.75 is the best size.
7.75 with 54s looks bad, skates good.

Friend of mine got back into skating a few years back. He was incensed when he couldn’t find a 7.5. I think he finally got the 7.5, 129s, and 58s. When you want to be like Lavar, but also ee3.

@Noble Experiment it looks totally fine to me now. I also had no concept of the fact that certain wheels were wider and narrower back then.

129s and 58s is pretty wild though.
