Steepness of sb/skatepark banks
« on: November 27, 2019, 10:17:24 AM »
My small hometown wants to build a kind of a rain ditch and they want to make it skateable which is super cool of them. I just came back from a meeting with the officials. Itīs basically a T-shaped form with banks on all the sides. They will be approximately 60cm high (altough they might be able to make them higher if we wish so). As far as the steepness of the banks goes, itīs up to us. So we thought we want to make some steeper sections to grind and around the hips it should be more mellow to ollie/flip over.

The grind area shouldnīt be super steep china/wallride banks, we were thinking around the same steepness as south banks. So: does anybody know how steep sb are (in degrees)? And also what would a good angle be for the more mellow ones to do flip tricks on/ skate the hip. They have given us a nice possibility here and I want to make sure nobody fucks it up.

thanks

tldr: How steep are the southbank banks? How steep are more mellow skatepark pyramid banks?

They can be pretty steep if you put a little concave in the bottom,  can you?

They are not a skatepark company, so they said quarters would be too complicated for them to build. I didnt ask but I guess they want to make the bank transition normal flat to bank.

Somewhere around 30 should be fine, maybe a little less depending on how you're getting speed.

With 30 percent you can ride straight up  and down w/out hitting nose or tail.

But if you wanna use the bank for sliding, you'd come up at an angle which allows for a little steeper (which could be fun/ a challenge and since it's only 60 cm you could use it as a "wallie")

Just prop up a 60 cm piece of plywood and see what you like, or put you phone against a bank you like the angle of (iphones have a built in spirit level feature hidden in the compass app)
but yea 30° means no hitting tail or nose

Thanks the plywood tip, simple but golden, will do that. As I said before there will be banks on every side, so we ll definetly get some steeper slide/grind/wallie sections as well. They start building after winter, I m curious on how this will turn out.

I grew up in a city with a lot of ditches and all of them had a little curve at the bottom instead of just meeting at an angle. This should hold up better to erosion as well.

I’d say steep enough to have a nice grindable lip but not too steep so you can try some new stuff without having a heart attack.

You know I thought these forums were a for skating not discussing fetishes

I'm sure you're thinking of this but consider putting stuff like a curb or ledge up top.

Pretty much my favorite thing to skate.

Like this but without the part where it rounds off at the very top

first 3 tricks

This part is a lil less steep, flat part is longer, and it doesn't round off as badly at the top
And the curb isn't double-sided so liptricks are way less sketchy but actual boardslides are tougher
2 stair thing by the wall is pretty easy to get on. Banks boosted well..

Iīm from Austria. Lived in Vienna for 14 years and moved back to the countryside an hour east of Vienna now. Locals here always struggled to get a skatepark, so I was really surprised the council actually asked us before doing something. They will start building it in early 2020. Here is a rendering of what we want them to do. It probably wont be as good (for example they said they wonīt make QPs), but we ve tried to put everything in and see what they will come up with. Thanks for all your answers!

Edit: fuck I ve tried to get that pic in here for 10 mins now. Can someone point me to a hoster, where I can find the link I need, then I can share. thanks

Exactly, a wallie/bank to slide and grind on. As I said all the banks will be about 60cm high except the hip where it should go up to one meter (thats soemthing they agreed on in our meeting).

is there gonna be a drain (not seeing it on picture?) if not, make the flat 1 percent slanted into 1 specific corner so the rest stays dry and you can scoop it out

Thank you. The process was really tiring and towards the end I didnt go to meetings anymore since seemingly everyone involved was butthurt over some shit, it was ridicolous. Some things are not quite as planned out (for example the banks are not grindable) but so far the parks looks sick and I canīt wait to skate it!

you might fix this my positioning a slappy curb on the top of the bank. Somethin like this:

Edit: just saw in one of the pics that you've got it already on at least one bank. All in all it looks like a fun place. Congrats!

that's a very cool project and the exact type of outreach cities should be doing. did your city post about the park or the process anywhere? would be great example to send to city councils

This park looks like fun times and accidents when a bunch of people decide to carve the thing up together.

Why not make them all a different steepness?
