8.5 deck with 8.25 axles is the perfect amount of carpet
I did the opposite up until last month. 8.25 board on 149s 8.5 axle. Now I'm up to 8.38 board, same 149s. Call me crazy.
Funny, I've been running 149 Indys for nearly a decade and all 8.25s I rode until i moved upward were on those. I always thought 149s fit 8.25 - 8.5 well. Even after they released 144 a few years ago.
It is all depending on where you want the wheels to sit, and personal preference comes into it a lot.
Before 144s came in, I was riding 139s on 8.12 and they sat inside a bit, now with 144 they sit perfectly on the edge but I found that some tricks felt funny because the wider trucks would mean I would have to be more precise on things like back tails.
Before 144s, more people would ride 149s on 8.25 and still do, as the wheels sit much better on the edge of the board, just the same way quite a few people ride 159 on 8.5 sized boards.
I like my wheels sitting right on the edge of the deck, so 149s with three washers on the inside on 8.38 is good for me and they actually sit about the same as 159 on 8.5 with no washers.
But really it is up to the individual and how much axle they want to see, but most commonly, I use something like this when setting up boards for people in the shop:
8.0 to 8.1 = 139
8.1 to 8.25 = 144
8.38 to 8.5 = 149
8.6 to 8.75 = 159
8.8 to 9.0+ = 169
Often but not always:
Ramp / transition skating = wider axles
Street / tech skating = shorter axles
