139s on 8.5s
« on: December 11, 2020, 09:52:47 AM »
After seeing Reynolds and Ellington run this setup for quite sometime i finally tried it and liked it. Really feels the same as the 149s but slightly lighter and i dont see the wheels as much when rolling, I noticed its easier to do scoop tricks (bs360, tres, bigspins) and 180 flip variations. Still havent tried the 144s but they may be the next buy.

8.5 deck with 8.25 axles is the perfect amount of carpet
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

I did the opposite up until last month. 8.25 board on 149s 8.5 axle. Now I'm up to 8.38 board, same 149s. Call me crazy.

When I ride too drastic of a magic carpet I miss a lot of grinds, but if it works it works. Just saw that Tommy Sandoval runs 7.6 Krux Lo on an 8.125 with 51-53mm wheels, which seems insane for a hucker.

I'm a big fan of the magic carpet, but always 8.25 with 8in trucks.

The whole baker team used to ride 139s or 147s on 8.5s; not sure about now tho.
Always did 8.5 trucks with an 8.5 board. Anytime I try to skate narrow trucks grind tricks feel so unstable to me.

I thought I saw or read somewhere AR rides 8.1 boards on 139s with 52mm wheels.

His board doesn't look that wide to his trucks when pausing videos but I am happy to be corrected.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

He's been of the 8.5 & 139 setup for a while now

The real question is right now I'm on 8.25 and 149s, but want to also skate some 8.125 and possibly some 8s. Go down to 144 or 139?

.25” greater/less than truck width is acceptable to most.

Funny, I've been running 149 Indys for nearly a decade and all 8.25s I rode until i moved upward were on those. I always thought 149s fit 8.25 - 8.5 well. Even after they released 144 a few years ago.

It is all depending on where you want the wheels to sit, and personal preference comes into it a lot.

Before 144s came in, I was riding 139s on 8.12 and they sat inside a bit, now with 144 they sit perfectly on the edge but I found that some tricks felt funny because the wider trucks would mean I would have to be more precise on things like back tails.

Before 144s, more people would ride 149s on 8.25 and still do, as the wheels sit much better on the edge of the board, just the same way quite a few people ride 159 on 8.5 sized boards.

I like my wheels sitting right on the edge of the deck, so 149s with three washers on the inside on 8.38 is good for me and they actually sit about the same as 159 on 8.5 with no washers.

But really it is up to the individual and how much axle they want to see, but most commonly, I use something like this when setting up boards for people in the shop:

8.0 to 8.1 = 139
8.1 to 8.25 = 144
8.38 to 8.5 = 149
8.6 to 8.75 = 159
8.8 to 9.0+ = 169

Often but not always:

Ramp / transition skating = wider axles
Street / tech skating = shorter axles

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

sorry

139 on 8.5? Hell even 149 are a bit short for 8.5 to me

159 and 8.5 is the perfect equilibrium

Lately I've been riding a reverse magic carpet.  Sized down from riding 8.5's to 8.25, and now I ride my Thunder 149's on 8-8.125's.

Is this preventing me from doing some tricks as comfortably as I would be with a narrower axle? It felt wrong at first but I skated the 149s because I'm cheap and didn't want a new set. Now I sort of love the set up and feel great skating everything from transition to flat with my wide trucks and narrow board, bur I want to know if I'm potentially making things harder for myself with my set-up.

Lately I've been riding a reverse magic carpet.

I think the technically correct term for that phenomenon is hot rod  ;D I could imagine it being harder to flip?
why come?

Lol that's hilarious, I have never heard it called that but it makes perfect sense.

I haven't noticed it being harder to flip... mostly wondering if it affects 360 flips and nose/tailslides!

I've actually had the most problems going primo with trucks wider than the board. I've noticed a bit of magic carpet helps the board fall back onto the wheels

I think I ran 149s because it suggested a board width of 8.25-8.75, so my board was on the lower end of the truck's range not the higher end. I thought they flushed well with 8.25s too. Worked out in the end cause I moved up to 8.38 and don't have to change a thing.

I always rode 149s on an 8.5. I finally got 159s and put them on an 8.5 and it was game changing. Took a second to break in, but now I will not go back. Also stepped up my wheel shape to a more wider/squarer wheel. Hyped on skating with that setup
