The Pudding's style is really close to Josh Katz (not the skater) at the new york times

Data Visualization is kinda like skating in a way that fundamentals and style trump everything.

Nobody cares about how interactive or statistically dense your graphic is if it isn't aesthetically nice to look at.

If you're anyway decent with photoshop or illustrator you could probably pick it up pretty easy
