Lavar McBride
« on: December 16, 2019, 11:59:52 AM »
Was skating today by Embarcadero and a dude comes up to me. Basically incoherent, but mumbling names of spots in between random sentences. Then starts mumbling names of videos and tells me about his bad foot. Asks to use my board several times. Finally he asks me to take several pictures of him, so I do just because I kinda want dude to leave me alone. Fist bumps me, tells me "Now you know Lavar Mc Bride", then leaves.

I thought it was bullshit until I got to work. There are several marks on the face that match as does the voice. He looked to have mental issues and/or was on something.

Anyone know anything about his current state and if this encounter was real?

He does suffer from a pretty serious mental illness unfortunately and has for quite awhile.

Hope he's doing ok.

theres this thing called instagram, not sure if you have heard of it. users can upload pictures right from their mobile devices with just a couple taps. my favorite pro aurelian giraud posts some wild stuff on there, dude bs 360d a pyramid like 20 feet in the air the other day. highly recommend for any skater. can use all standard android / iOS emoji's on there too. its like facebook but without all of people's stupid, worthless opinions all over the place (for the most part)

Reminds me of when I was 10 and a homeless woman told me she was shirley temple. I believed her until I got the power of the internet a few years later.

Idk if it's fucked up to ask for the OP to post the pics? I am curious what lavar looks like these days. If you don't want to upload to ig, upload to flickr or something and post the share link they give you after you upload.

There is a small freckle/mole underneath his left eye that is a match for the pictures I found online.

Was wearing some Nikes he spraypainted to match the sweater. Overall he was barely coherent, but friendly. Wandered over to that spot across the Island where people hang out.

I met him skating in SF probably 7ish years ago.  He was super nice and normal.  I knew who he was right when I saw him.  He struck up a conversation and said something like "You probably heard of my brother, Marcus McBride" and I was like "Nan, I heard of you too!"  He seemed surprised, which surprised me.

I came up skating in the very late 90's/early 00's. Shops couldn't easily get old videos but somehow The Station in Fremont, CA managed to get me the old Plan B and World videos. I spent like 2 years of savings on them and the first volume of 411's so this was super weird to me. Like Guy, Lavar was an example of sheer talent mixed with style and mixing not the gnarliest shit together, but clean flowing. Was a bummer to see him in this state today.

around 2009, I was walking up Haight st with my board and the 3 younger black thugged out dudes ahead of me noticed i was a skater so one of them starts telling me he used to be roommates with Lavar. it took him a second to remember Lavar's name, but after he told me who it was, I was hyped it was someone I knew of and held in high regard. all I could say back was 'he was way ahead of his time'

Damn he still loves those Ralph Lauren pieces too. That sweater is fresh.

I wish him the best. His Trilogy part is timeless. I love watching footage of him stylin it, skating in non-skate shoes.

To me he is a legend and deserves more recognition.

I have a superstition with letting others ride my board as the few times I have something has broken. In this case I severely regret not letting him do so.

How's that switch 360 flip at .27 secs.

You asked the man for a picture so you could post it on the internet but wouldn’t let him cruise around on your board? Huh?

Probably could have found out if it was him based on his push

that’s a whack superstition
