Changing the color of your shoes
« on: October 10, 2015, 06:46:21 AM »
I know this has been a thread before but I wasn't able to find it.
Basically I bought some ctas pros for hella cheap but they have this really ugly star pattern all across them so I was going to paint them or do something to cover all that up but I didn't know what I could use to cover them that would still skate well and not just flake off after one session.

I've used acrylic paint on suede shoes before. It does come off where you flick, but that's expected. The shoes will be a little stiff at first though. I've also used sharpie to change shoe color, that one will smell for a while but eventually go away.

i'm pretty sure finland and others have just taped off certain parts of the shoe and then just spraypainted them

Yea I was basically looking for something spray able because I think I could get the best web coverage that way, but I didn't know if paint or some other muster substance would be best, and also what kind of paint.

I've done whitused both spray paint, and acrylic paint. I used a spray can at first on these Gravis, but it wasn't working very well so I used acrylic after I had already used the spray paint. The Adidas are all acrylic, as you can see, I did a bad job.

I put bleach on some Emerica Winos I had a few years ago and it made them kinda fall apart.

Do you think that would effect the white rubber toe any?

Spray paint and tape is the easiest. Leather dye is probably the best, but you have to use a paint brush to get it on without making a mess. So it takes a lot longer to get done.

Good thread, i have some project ba's that are blue and green and was thinking about it. after reading this thread i googled it and found some youtube videos, this one has shit music but is pretty helpful. although they use timberlands which are different than  most suede skate shoes.

Those look solid. And since it's dye I don't think the color would really scrape off like it would with paint.

Aside from over-drying and breaking down the structure of the rubber cutting it's life maybe in half, you should be fine.

I've used sharpies before on shoes, it helps get them an actual black suede color. A lot of times with spray paint, you end up with a weird gunmetal grey/gray shade. I've also noticed that if you use a paint pen, as opposed to spray paint, the shoe feels a lot less stiff, has a sort of shine like 'oiled suede', and seems to last a little bit longer. You can find them at places like Michaels. Usually getting one more than you'd think you'd need is a good idea, certain colors seem to need more paint than others, and once a paint pen starts drying up, you're fucked. I've saved many a shoe this way. These are the kinds of paint pens I'd look for. Normal sharpies are probably your worst off, but these ones I've had much better luck with... but if youre just trying to cover up the stars, you might be able to pull it off with one.

Since Nike won't consistently make black dunks I always paint mine. I use really shitty paint in flat black and do just a few light coats on the suede. I tape off the areas I don't want painted

I think I've dyed about a dozen shoes now (some for other people). Fiebing's suede dye of any color on a neutral suede color works best for me. Or, black dye on any suede color. Doesn't crack or rub off. I haven't tried leather, and canvas is a pain with bleeding but manageable.

Acrylic paint sort of burns suede.

I spray painted a pair of Oxblood suede HUF Dylan's black. I'd skated them a little bit and it looked good at first, they actually looked brand new and kind of like leather. They were cool to wear when not skating but when I tried skating them it was insanely slippy. I had to sand off loads of the spray paint on the toe box so there was suede and grip contact again. Now they skate great and it kind of looks like the original colour has bled through the black so I don't really regret it but wouldn't spray another pair of suede shoes I intended to skate. Not sure what it's like with canvas, I find it pretty slippy as it is so image it would be awful if you wanted to skate a pair that had been sprayed.

Some adidas I’ve been skating / working in for a bit j sprayed black except the Velcro and the laces - about to film for a part so wanted to have some shoes that look good in clips , always liked how white shoes sprayed black look when they get worn
waved and warped
