I skate and I surf. Honestly any skater who lives near the ocean should be out surfing. Surfing helps tone areas of your body that skating doesn't, it helps with balance and style as well. Also, surfing can offer a well needed break from skating and just being in the ocean is a good thing for a human's body and brain, especially if your body is injured (obviously not in a cast, talking sprains and strains here). It's definitely not for everyone, but like I said, if you live near the ocean (or a river wave or can go wake surfing) you should, at least, give it a try....

most of the good surfers dont live right on the beach anymore, maybe 10-20 min drive

There's some truth in that.  However, it doesn't have to be that expensive. You can get years out of boards and wetsuits if you take care of them. You certainly don't need an SUV.

Surfing is great. Surfers not so much. Surf culture is rich in history but not that  fun or inspiring these days. I surf once or twice a week but its been so stormy lately up here in the PNW, I've missed a couple of weeks. Jonesing. Its not easy but if you have the right board and conditions it can feel like skateboarding to an extent. They can compliment each for sure. A good frontside slash can feel like grinding a pool shallow end. That's the best.
