Skate within your abilities as to avoid likely injuries but remain aware that if you can think of something (tricks, or skating a spot a certain way etc.), nothing can stop you from actually doing it, and how much you actually want to do it (and have it realized as opposed to it remaining a lazy concept in your head) is what will determine the pace of your progress, because if you sincerely want to do something then you'll naturally be investing the time necessary to 'practice' it.

Basically don't put imaginary limitations on yourself, don't be afraid to be ambitious (basically work on any self confidence issues you might have) and also, get inspired by what others are doing but never think that what you do yourself has to look anything like it. The more you do you, the better you'll get at it, and look like what you want to look like on a board.

learn the basics! there are so many kids at my local park throwing 360flips but literally cant do a lap of the park without bailing. learn how to skate around, skate to the shop and back without getting off your board. get a solid ollie before worrying about flip tricks. once you have the basics down everything else will be a lot easier

Addendum to my last post which was mostly about breaking mental barriers and overcoming self doubt one step at a time: make sure to study basic physics too, to analyze what you actually need to do before you do it and don't waste time and energy just flinging tricks at random. I'm talking pressure 'points' on the board as you pop different tricks, basic patterns such as building then releasing tension to make the board react, mentally segmenting your board in sections etc. Then make sure to pay attention to how each part of your body moves (head, shoulders, torso, hips, lower body) on tricks you can't seem to get in order to, all things considered, develop a clear understanding of the practical aspect of skateboarding and how it's physically supposed to work. Trying all kinds of tricks of completely different types in all stances (one could even break down tricks in 'species') will help you a lot get well-rounded as far as dexterity and get the key movement patterns that are common to every possible trick variation down. Ben Koppl is a good one to study if you can catch him, or footage of him skating live - he has like three tricks ready to work at all times regardless of the current position of his body (and not too coincidentally, he's also a skate teacher). All those aspects considered, skating can remind me a lot of how I naively perceive martial arts.

Watch until you know this word for word

this will help. good luck, guys!

hey what's up guys I'm Anna man come up
and you're watching sports school we're
here in Southern California sunny San
Diego at the Mission Valley YMCA
skateboard park in Claremont and today
we're going to be talking a little bit
about vert ramps this Moorabbin we're
sitting on is the vert ramp from the
brought down here to Claremont and set
it up it's got eleven and a half foot
transitions on the walls with two feet
of vert above that we're talking a
pretty big rear ramp this is the one
that throws your ID you ready to step it
up a couple things you want to review
keep in mind
number one is gear up always wear your
knee pads elbow pads and most important
your dome-piece gonna be ringing a bell
I'll be hitting your head
so once you're all geared up an
important thing to learn it's going to
give you a lot more confidence on vert
is learning how to use your pads these
plastic caps are there for a reason so
that you can slide on your knees
basically all that means is sitting on
your feet and leaning back a bit don't
lean forward cause it's gonna put you on
your face you don't want to do that so
you can practice new slides by just
running up a transition turning sitting
on your feet and lean it back better to
lean back and fall on your back like
that then to lean forward but if you do
happen to lean forward that's why you
got plastic on your elbow pads to so
fall lean back up put your elbows out to
and you can slide like that if you fall
on the front side you can do it
backwards too it's actually kind of fun
sliding all over the place once you got
your knee slides down you can have a lot
more confidence knowing that you can get
out of pretty much anything you get
yourself into there's couple rules as
you get into the vert ramp that apply
two mini ramps and any kind of
transition the number one rule anytime I
see kids fall chances are the reason why
they did is because they didn't keep
their knees bent and you stand up like
this you're like a big tree and you
don't have any center of gravity or
center gravity is too high when you
crouch down like this the more you
crouch down the lower you are the lower
your center of gravity the better
balance you have not to mention that
when you fall off from here
it hurts way less so once you're
confident enough you got your knee
slides down you're probably already here
you know how to pump right but on a big
vert ramp like this you need to
exaggerate everything because the higher
up on a ramp you go the more you need to
bend your knees keep your center of
gravity low so you need to bend your
knees even more you get your pumping
going your weight centered right over
the middle of your board
you start pumping and the higher up on
the ramp you go the more you have to
bend your knees at the very height of
your pulse is when you want to bend your
knees the most so the by the time your
way up here on the vert all the way
crouch down you can grab your board you
should be that low that you can touch
your board if you want to all the way
crouch
whether you're skateboarding or whether
you're doing gymnastics whatever sport
you're doing your body always follows
where your head goes okay so if you want
to turn frontside backside do a flip you
got to look where you want to go so back
side I want to look back toward the flat
bottom to be able to turn these are
backside kickturns
so I tell people point the direction you
want to go so you can open up your
shoulders and look the direction you
want to go I learned kick turns I
learned and grabbing my nose to help me
get around it forces you to bend down
grab your nose
bend down pump
you get your confidence with your knee
slides you got your kick turns front
side and back side you're getting all
the way up on the bird eventually we
want to just fly right out to the top
because it's time to drop in
so by this point you should have dropped
in on something and certainly doesn't
have to be a 13 foot high of a ramp to
start with you want to start with the
smaller ramp the mini ramp work your way
up you can drop in on a two foot high
ramp you can drop in on a three foot
four foot work your way up eight foot
drop in on the bowl or something and
then eventually when you're ready you
come on up here to the vert ramp and
essentially it's the same exact thing
it's just a whole lot scarier because
you look down and you're like oh my
goodness I have to fall past this two
feet of vert before even my wheels are
even gonna hit it looks crazy but really
it's the exact same thing as dropped in
on a four foot high ramp if you can drop
in on a four foot high ramp you can drop
in on up a ramp you just got to get over
it in your head but it's the same thing
you're gonna click your tail out I tell
people to keep their eyes on their boat
so you're not looking down all this big
scary ramp just look at your bolts your
four bolts that's where you gonna place
your front foot whatever is more
comfortable for you put your foot out or
step into it I always stepped into it
sometimes I grab my nose to make sure I
keep my knees bent because what's the
number one most important thing to keep
your balance and keep your knees bent
place your front foot over and then stop
it down
you should hear that sound if you're
dropping in right when you're first
learning to drop in you should hear your
front trucks stomp onto the vert so
here's what it looks like just like
dropping out on anything else
click your tail out don't spend too much
time up here if you're looking at it
thinking about it you don't want to do
it you want to just decide this is the
one I'm gonna do you walk right up the
top of the vert ramp you click your tail
out watch your floor front bolts place
your foot over knees bent stomp it down
the other thing about dropping in on a
vert ramp is it takes longer than
dropping on it anything else you've ever
dropped in on so you're going to be
riding down this big long hill a lot of
people get the stomp and they bend their
knees and then they stomp and then
they're halfway down and they start to
stand up and then by the time you get to
the flat bottom you're standing way up
here you don't have any balance you're
gonna ride it up all the way knees bent
the whole time concentrate on keeping
your knees bent all the way out to the
flat bottom you're gonna need them bent
when you hit the other wall anyway right
knees bent before you even take off
maybe grab your nose ensure that you're
gonna keep your knees bent rough it on
stomp it down knees bent all the way so
that pretty much sums it up
all the basics all the way to the top of
the ramp and dropping in it's a whole
new world up here this is Andy McDonald
keep watching sport school peace

Skate more
/grand opening grand closing.

Other advice I have is when trying to learn tricks remember to actually try different things. Sounds dumb and obvious but I’ve caught myself doing the same thing 1000 times expecting different results. Remember to actually try different foot and shoulder positioning, where you are putting your body weight etc.

Sleep with your board like Coltrane would fall asleep with his sax in his mouth.

This also works, but you need to invert the wheel you're going to stick in your mouth for it not to get cone-shaped which would throw you off your newly acquired expertise on the next day.

Don't rush it, got to have the basics down to progress.

Also good cardio. Makes a huge difference whether you can skate 1 or 2 hours with full energy after warming up. At least for me, for a few years I used to need half an hour to warm up, then I'd be able to skate hard and do my go-to tricks for another half an hour, after which I'd be too tired to try anything properly. My progression really picked up again when I got into better shape, by just skating more and exercising a bit. Could use that extra hour or two to learn new shit.

Basics, basics & basics. After you get your basics down tack some more basics on that shit.

Got 50-50s down? Do 180s in or out of them, then do them both BS and FS. I feel this build you to hve better board control, making it easier to try harder variations in the future (shove out big spin out).

I've seen people with a preference for people to do BS or FS tricks, learn your preference and don't neglect the other. Learned BS 180s and BS way too late into skateboarding.

Don't neglect rehabbing injuries when you inevitably get injured. Strengthen you knees and ankles post injury, older you will appreciate it.

Don't be afraid to ask for tips from folks at the park. Sometimes all it takes is them telling you the small adjustment you need to make for things to click. Struggling with a trick 1000s of times sucks, be open to receive the secret sauce from the older guys.

Skate hard and skate often. Get off your ass at the park and keep going, save the chit chat for later. Be systematic too: warm up - fundamental - new shit

a few things i learned way too late but helped me pretty much progressing alot and super fast in my twenties:

1. Nosewheelies on curbs/boxes!
As good as nothing improves boardfeel and control for everything as much as ollies into nosewheelies, balanced out properly over some obstacle.
they also improve the "aim" you have with your board alot. what is basically boardcontroll in a nutshell.
Nosewheelie as much as possible and get as good as you can with them.
its the key to learn everything cool super fast and easy.
- like fs & bs nosegrind, krooked, even solid back 5050 (because it works kind of over the nose).
learn to hold the nosewheelies comfortably for some lengt. so you will get the midtrick awareness to pop or flip out eventually.

It will do wonders!

2. This is a kind of boring tip but nonetheless:
commit to tricks! things are not even as hard as they seem.
when you can flip it, you can mostly land it aswell.
ever wondered why your local hero learns a new flip a day and instantly takes it down a set? or why pros go for tricks on spots they dont even have on lock and still do them after some tries, like they just learned it on the spot?
its because its nice to have the basics on lock. but when you gradually have a feel for the trick you are about to do, you can basically pull it off when you really commit to it!
like when you are more of a kuickflipper and as good as never do heelflips and more or less suck them, i bet you can still land one in under 10 tries down your local skatepark threestair or curb in front of your house when you really go for it.
Not commiting is what gets you hurt eventually.

This is pretty solid advice BUT that last point is wrong imo. I have a buddy that commits to everything and he is always injured. I have asuper sensitive ejector button and as frustrating as it is to not just stomp on tricks within a couple tries, the ones i put down i almost always roll away from.. i wont say i never get hurt cos i do, but its not very often and i have definitely spent less time in A&E than captain commitment mentioned above.

just blindy stomping on everything is a sure fire way to fuck yourself up. theres a happy middle ground in there, aim for that

True. I was not about an "hellride!! send it!" attitude.
It is more about a "the 20 tries it took you could honestly have been five"

Many people get stuck in the "i will try a tre down the box" loop for hours. Eventually coming close. You can see it in every skatepark ever. And i am definitely guilty of it.
Then there is the "i am going to tre the box now" kind of guy (;

Have you been skating for ten years yet? Once you have been skating for ten years, you might be able to progress faster. Not one single person on here could do switch hardflip until they had been skating at least 7 years.
Time bro. It’s gonna take lots of time. If you can’t skate hand rails after 1 year of skating, you probably won’t go pro.

Try and make little goals for yourself every session. "Today I'm going to ollie up a curb 5 times" or "before I leave today I must do a kickflip". You'll get frustrated, especially if you do these towards the end of the session but you'll feel better about yourself and will have that little bit of confidence when you head out to skate again.

Everybody is different too. I lose flip tricks ridiculously quickly so I am constantly skating to try and get them back under my belt, but maybe you're more consistent with them.

Of course there will be days when you can't do things that you've done a thousand times before and you'll question your self worth, but that's just skateboarding. Just keep at it.
