Dishwashing - Manual or Automatic
« on: February 23, 2020, 08:09:51 AM »
I was wondering how people do their dirty dishes since we already talk about shitting/wiping.

Most of my dishes go to the machine after scraping most of the stuff of in the trash/compost bucket.

The stuff that gets a hand wash are knives and specific non-stick pans. I always hated hand washing items because it takes barely any time for sponges to get stinky. I finally found a good general purpose sponge (not for hard scrubbing), that will get dishes clean and not scratch pans.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079NPLD94/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought these in July last year and am still using the first two. Still not stinky with only one of them floppy and losing little bits that I make sure to rinse off. Just make sure to be careful to do that and also how you clean your knives (my wife cut off quite a bit off of one).

I'm not selling shit I just want to know how everyone else deals with this mundane task and how I can be better.

I like to smoke a bowl and handwash dishes, it gets really relaxing having your hands in warm soapy water lol. I also just use a sponge with a green scrubber, they usually don't end up stinking though cuz I ring them out hard. I do have a dishwasher but I mostly just use it to dry off dishes.

Handwash, means you can listen to music or podcasts while you do them.
I usually do mine super late at night when it's quiet.

+1, love listening to a podcast while doing the dishes. It’s therapeutic. I have a dishwasher and only use it to dry dishes I’ve hand washed

I too get my podcasts in during hand washing, but only because I have no dishwashing machine. I will in a week though so fuck that shit, I'm done.

PS I use thick gloves made by Playtex.

I forgot to mention that I learned to wash dishes around 6 or so out curiosity but was exploited into washing the dishes almost every night until I was 13 when I let them know my younger brother could figure it out. My family came from the Philippines, and even though we weren't as poor as we were before we immigrated, I was the automatic dishwasher.

In contrast, my son unloads and loads the dishwasher.

I don't have a dishwasher and I live alone, so handwashing isn't too bad for me. If I'm slipping and let them pile up I'll just put on a record and try to follow up with some other chores, at least until the record is done.

Dishes is probably my least favorite chore.  My apartment only has 1 sink which makes it even more time consuming.

This is riveting stuff.

I grew up having to wash the dishes by hand. Luckily, we have a dishwasher and only wash the hand wash only stuff by hand.

Hand wash only.

I've only ever lived in one apartment in my life that had a dishwasher and I usually forgot it was there.

If I had a family or had dinner parties often I would've used the dishwasher but since I usually live alone and at most will have 4-5 friends over for dinner at a time I've never felt the need.

I take pride in my dishwashing. If someone else offers to do the dishes I usually tell them I'll do it because I find people don't do as good a job as me. There's nothing worse than grabbing for a dry dish in the dish rack and getting a greasy hand. Fucking horrible.

my wife does them...

She kicked up a stink that my dish washing wasn't up to par so I just stopped doing them... (I will wash them when she isn't home though)

Do you do the periodic white vinegar maintenance? How often?

This is why I’m “not allowed” to fold laundry 😂.

My dishwasher has a “sanitize” setting that we run every other month, when I clean out the filter.

Depends on my mood. I'll normally get stoned, put some relaxing music on, and hand wash because that's just what I've been accustomed to, but if I'm feeling lazy then they get a quick rinse and in to the machine they go.
Seldom do I use a sponge, though. I prefer a brush with a longer handle. Don't want my already cracked, fucked up hands to get any worse.

Dishwasher besides specialty dishes like large pots and cast iron stuff.  Always load the machine as soon as dishes are there, can't stand dishes lingering in the sink, makes my kitchen look 10x better just having the sink clear

Don’t have a dishwasher but, I like dishwashing when I’m not forced to. It’s relaxing when done in free will. That being said, I used to be dishwasher and will occasionally miss the machinery because it was so much easier to do everything.

My fiancee and I are about to have a dishwasher for the first time, but the sink in the apartment is nice and big so this may be the way to go because it seems efficient. We've always had to dry dishes by hand or let them air out on the counter which blows.

Hate washing dishes and always used to do the dumbest thing and just wash what I needed for the day's meal (after I had already gone through everything and there was a huge pile of dishes stinking up the kitchen). Then would wash them all like once every month or two and it would take like 3 hours trying to scrub off all the moldy greas that was covering everything. Getting a dishwasher elevated my quality of life bigly
