Tiny Truck Thread (≤7" axle)
« on: March 31, 2020, 10:11:32 PM »
Post Your Cruiser thread got the ball rolling on this. So far:

70s Nash banana board
55mm 90a mini logo wheels
Reds
No grip cause that feels like cheating

Nothing more fun to bomb a mellow hill on

bennett vector 4.3s, tracker half tracks, or cut a roller skate in half

also, what trucks should i attempt to put on this 5.25" x 21.5" board? i guess Tracker still makes 5.35" axle trucks? is it even worth it? need a new project to kill time at home...

Lol. You should start a tiny truck thread.. I've been bored and wondering about this too.
I've got small Walmart trucks so I've been looking around for scrap wood.
I blame Blender and Hewitt
https://www.instagram.com/nblender/
https://www.instagram.com/goonsac/

If you can handle 4.5"(?) axle width then roller skate stuff is probably the cheapest route.
Or a 70's era trucks from an old complete? Craigslist Penny board?
Penny has trucks with 3" and 4" hangers but those are $30/pr
Sure Grip does a wider 3" hanger. Normal skate hanger is 2"?
Ace 00 is 6.5" with 3.875" hanger.

i'd jump on board a 'small truck' thread. was researching how old those trackers are on my skinny cruiser i posted a few days back. looks like from the late 70s.

BUT.... tracker makes a slightly updated version with same specs, 5.25" axle. and i found a site that sells them for $39. when i have a chance i'll post the links + start a small truck thread, unless someone beats me to it.

stay safe!

not really a traditional cruiser.... but with time in virus isolation, got in some tinkering with old stuff to make a new toy. inspired by peter hewitt insta clips.
old antihero eagle cut down, old early 80s trackers (axles are 5" wide), some fat penny wheels, and grip tape scraps, random bushings/bearings/hardware.
pretty fun so far....

Yeah, this is great. I'm liking the blunt nose and tapered tail, might have to steal that..
The striped grip is a nice idea too, I wouldn't have thought of that, really finishes off the classic look.
If only I didn't suck so much at cutting straight lines. Even with a straightedge..
That's the basic look I wanna go for but maybe more 60's looking? Skate trucks, narrower wheels for that skinny clay wheel look.

I've been coming across random Tracker info while geeking on tiny trucks.
I think the Dart and Classic hangers interchange or are the same. For the smaller sizes..
Difference is the baseplates, Dart probably has less KP angle (10* vs 15*?) for a less surfy, more stable feel. Iirc..
Were you talking about RTS/RTX in another thread? I'm curious if there's a KP angle difference there.

Dart = RTS Geometry
Dart and Classic have different baseplates.
Tracker Racetrack S and X say they come in Fulltrack and Midtrack sizing, but have only found fulltrack sizing sold out online.

Independent T-Hanger 109 with 6.9" axle and 4.3" hanger

Sure Grip Skate Co. makes a 3" hanger (Park Series Truck) as opposed to the traditional 2" skate hanger
Unsure of baseplate situation here—probably cutting a skate plate in half. Some of those complete plates are bananas (https://www.suregrip.com/product-p/pstc.htm; https://www.suregrip.com/category-s/135.htm)
This link sells "vintage," ready to set-up Sure Grips 4.5" axle here: https://sk8supply.com/collections/trucks/products/small-vintage-style-sure-grip-trucks-silver-4-5

You can still find vintage Chicago Roller Skate Co., Bennett, Tracker, etc. trucks on eBay if you wanna go real old-school

whats the size range to constitute as a "tiny" truck?

I guess I subconsciously included stuff with ≤7" axle. I feel like it is not that uncommon to ride 7.5 boards and/or 7.62" trucks (indy 129, venture 5.0, thunder 145). I guess I skipped in-between stuff like thunder 143 (7.125 axle) and Ace 11 (7.25 axle). I now added Indy 109s (6.9 axle) to the list after thinking about this.

Yeah. ~7" sounds like a good cut-off. There's not a ton of options but are all of them worth mentioning? Bullet? Paris?
What I'm really interested in are rollerskate trucks and vintage stuff. The wheel/bushing/wheel look is really catching my eye.
Idk many brands, Bahne? Chicago, Sure-Grip.. But if the vintage stuff is going for ACS prices I couldn't afford or justify it.

https://minilogoskateboards.com/mini-logo-trucks-7-13-raw-set-of-2-12116 7.13"
Might be a good cruiser option for something like a zip zinger.
But for $40 I'd go Indy, Ace, or even Tracker or Polar Bear! $30 I might think about it..

https://www.sector9.com/collections/mission/products/7-gw-mission-1-truck Gawd! these look weird

http://beartrucks.com/?products=polar-bear 85mm and 105mm
https://landyachtz.com/trucks/
https://socalskateshop.com/Bear-85mm-Polar-Bear-Trucks-Raw.html 6.125" axle, 2" tall, 3.375" hanger
Goofy looking baseplate but they sound like they're well designed

https://www.sk8kings.com/tracker-trucks-dart-6685106129139149161184219mm-one-truck.html
Dart = RTS geometry
And that's less kingpin angle? 10 degrees vs the usual 15?
Pivot nub angle looks goofy. No swapping to Indy baseplates..

nice! thanks for starting this thread
here's my chopped antihero skinny cruiser from the other thread. It has late 70s tracker halftracks with small pivots. 66mm hangers + 5.35" axles

here are links to slightly modified 'classic' halftracks with a beefier pivot, as well as a version with a 'dart' baseplate. both with 66mm hangers.

https://sk8supply.com/collections/trucks/products/tracker-trucks-5-5-axle-2-625-hanger-classic-haftracks-with-dart-base-set

they also sell the midtracks with 85mm hangers + 6.1" axels

I cut some roller skates In half with a handsaw and put bones bushings in them. Screwed it on a plank, cut out some decks, tried lots of wood options. Would really recommend during boring days. Blender and Hewitt have special lil decks that flex, it helps with the turn a lot. Cutting out a deck doesn’t really give it that bouncy turn feel. Still fun. Getting a zip zinger for actual cruisin, or something with those smaller trackers isn’t a bad choice since I couldn’t image going actual distance on one of these tiny boards or bringing one to the skatepark. I live in a crusty city And being able to slappy a curb, ollie up a curb is highly valued for my fun on a lil cruise. The good thing about the roller skates is you get 2 sets.i made a deck that has a roller skate truck in the front and a 159 on the back, it basically rides like a 3 wheeler and it has a tail so you can pop. I’ve got a shitload of cruisers right now. I rode six different boards around the block today. My wife doesn’t know about any of this.

I think I was off on roller skate stuff being cheaper, thought things came in pairs. Used skates/plates might be a budget option.
Roller skate stuff also uses different names. Hangers are called trucks. Baseplates are called hangers.
Plates are everything except wheels, bearings, boots. Sometimes the baseplate part is one piece and you have to cut it.
Sometimes the plates are a sheet of metal with baseplates bolted to it.
There's also 7mm axles so make sure to look for 8mm or 5/16" axles.

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/spo/d/san-diego-rollerskates-riedell-sure/7100610109.html
$15 for 2 plates. Need to cut and drill 4 holes..

https://www.skates.com/Sure-Grip-Trucks-s/332848.htm
All the Sure-Grip stuff together. You can see how confusing the names can be.
There's 10 degree and 45 degree baseplates. Looks like everyone is using 10* but 45* might work on long wheelbases.

And what about tall, skinny wheels? Got any suggestions?

https://rollerbones.com/rollerbones-team-logo-57mm-98a-8pk-white these are 57x30mm

https://www.spitfirewheels.com/formulafour/ 54mm radials and tablets are 31mm wide

https://www.skateone.com/mini-logo-skateboard-wheels-a-cut-2-56mm-95a-white-4pk
Bones sidecuts are kinda skinny but I think I'd just sand down these

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KjkMTAcvi/

In this one Blender (purple hat, if it's a bit confusing) is riding an old Bahne solid fibreglass deck from the 70s. Easier, and cheaper to get hold of than a Heated Wheel deck. Look for a pultruded deck around 27" long x 6" wide on vintage skateboard section of Ebay. e.g. something like this - https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970s-Vintage-Early-Yellow-Bahne-Fiberglass-Old-School-Skateboard-Deck/264681345541?hash=item3da03cd205:g:EXYAAOSwRYRefpcY not the wider looking Bahnes.

The decks were made by Ampul and there are plenty around under various names: Hang Ten, Santa Cruz, Bahne, etc.

I’ve been eying those Indy T hanger 109s for the last couple years but never pulled the trigger. Anybody here try them? How’s the turn?  I can’t find anything on them other than where to buy.

I've got some Indy 109s, they're fine, but if you want them to turn properly you'll need softer bushings than the standard Independent (88a?) ones. And the kingpin is a tad short if you want to run with kingpin nut really loose.

Here's a list of smaller trucks on the Decomposed freestyle skateboards website - https://www.decomposedskateboards.com/trucks

I think i'm gonna go with the sure-grip classics. in those skates.com links it looks like you gotta make sure to select the right truck for hanger-plates with metal or rubber pivot cups? irdk about using metal cups. any hot takes on this?

I liked Thom's choice of the 90a mini logos on his banana board. I already have a set of those in 53 and a set of 86/56 acid pods, but i might still get 54 keyframes to finally see what the hype is all about.

no idea what i'll do about hardware on the hardwood nash. will cross that bridge when i get to it i guess.

ps. don't bid more than 20 bucks on that bahne... lol

Metal pivot bushings sound like they'd be brutal rolling over cracks. Delrin is more or less solid too. But gummy wheels might soak up some/most/all of the jarring feel? I'd go soft for a cruiser and harder for slalom racing. Not that'd I'd do that, just my thinking. Metal might last forever but delrin can crack from impacts.

I think you also need to use a conical top bushing but not sure on the thickness. Looks like a conical bottom bushing would work.
I wonder if you can mix the suregrip stuff as long as you don't mix 10* and 45*.

I'm debating classics or craigslist/ebay
https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/spo/d/san-diego-rollerskates-riedell-sure/7100610109.html

Do you want the hardware to be flush or do you want a round dome for more of a vintage look?
Normal size/thread is #10-32 but you could move up to #12 or 1/4". What size drill bits you got?

looks like bones rough riders are tested + approved based on the blender/hewitt stuff i've checked out
the mini logo a-cut 90a in 55mm could be nice too!
could open a whole new level of madness....
https://www.skates.com/outdoor-roller-skate-wheels-s/98518.htm
https://www.skates.com/RollerBones-Wheels-s/470527.htm?searching=Y&sort=1&cat=470527&show=60&page=1
looks pricey, but you get 8 wheels

this seems to be the sure grip trucks combo to go with....
https://www.skates.com/Sure-Grip-double-action-trucks-Longer-Axle-p/pa516tal4.5.htm
https://www.skates.com/Sure-Grip-Roller-Skate-Plate-Hanger-Century-p/ceh.htm
would be $50 a pair, not including shipping/tax and any extra bushing fiddling

the trackers look like a much easier route
https://sk8supply.com/collections/trucks/products/tracker-trucks-5-5-axle-2-625-hanger-classic-haftracks-with-dart-base-set

with the 'rona giving more indoor time, just sharing links of my other areas of exploration....

Won't the 90a wheels be lacking in a bit of grip? And given that these things are all about tight turns, it's the grip of soft 78a/80a wheels that you want.

I found a pair of old banana board/penny trucks I. The bushes near a skatepark. It’s near the sea, so the nuts are rusty, and the aluminum is kinda salt-encrusted.

No maker details on them, but I want to clean them up and put them on a handmade board.

I’m just wondering about wheelbase on these things, looks to be about two footlengths on what Hewitt is riding

not sure that grip will be an issue with mini logo 90a, but it may make the board too tippy since they're not so wide.
56mm Mini Logo 90a are 32.5mm wide
56mm Keyframe 87a are 35mm wide
56mm Rough Riders 80a are 39mm wide
55mm Mini Logo AWOL 80a are 40mm wide (and only about $25)

i have a set of the 90a mini logo in 53mm and width is 32mm, i'm going to give them a shot today if the rain holds off.
Keep you all posted!

OK, this is kinda related to this (tiny trucks) but not specifically, but I didn't know where else to post it, so this seems like the best place to ask.

For those who are cutting down old decks to make bootleg Polarizers, are you mounting the trucks in the original positions? I realize that roller skate trucks require re-drilling, but how about the fore/aft positions of the trucks? Keep em the same?

till now I never re-drilled anything. Maybe I should?!

This thread has me hyped! I’ve considered trying to get a penny board via craigslist for the cheap, as to not spend big money in these trying times. I’ll try and hold off for the real deal. Nothing to contribute here on my end, per usual, just stoked about this wave. Looks like a lot of fun

[Russian accent] I like dis.. I like dis a lot.

I've been running the Tracker RTS/RTX combo (7" axle) on an Alva board for 10 years and it's easily my favorite cruiser setup, turns so sharp. I want to try to make something more like this but it'll be hard for me to cut and drill holes etc. as I live in a small ass apartment and don't really have any tools right now. Plus, I'm in Europe and shipping costs are a bitch..

I saw a guy on instagram using the #heatedwheel hashtag who put roller skate truck hangers on ace baseplates. I've been thinking about doing that since I could get hangers here in Europe and not pay 50$ shipping for some fucking baseplates - plus I have ace hangers laying around.

Has anybody tried this? What hangers would you think worked the best? I've been thinking about trying these:

Does anyone with a little more knowledge know what to look out for?

Don’t get Penny boards. They are kids toys. Bought them for my kids for Christmas. The trucks have no action.

What about half tracks?

https://www.trackertrucks.com/tracker-classic

5.5” axel

Also, Khiro wedge risers is what slalom riders use.

https://www.muirskate.com/longboard/hardware/khiro/risers

I use old 7.5” Tensor trucks on 1/2” risers and I cut an old board down to Penny dimensions with 58 mm Key Frames and it’s fun as hell.

This thread go me going stir crazy. Want to buy gear but don’t want to bother UPS/Fed Ex workers

My thinking too. Don't wanna spend $40-50 on another set of trucks. I'm debate CL skates but already paranoid about masking up and disinfecting. I live with an older person..
For you, if the price is right I'd get em for now.. comes with wheels and bearings?

I think The Heated Wheel is Blender's company, not sure tho. I didn't know he did that but I've been wondering the same cuz I've got Indy baseplates..
I'm guessing he used a 10 degree hanger like you linked. Got a pic/link of his setup? There's another version where the pivot can unscrew.
Anyhow.. that hanger + your Ace baseplate and kingpin sounds like it'd work.
Bushings? Probably need to use a shorter conical top bushing from a skateboard. Thick bottom/boardside bushing would give the best turn. But I'd check to make sure the hanger/yoke doesn't rub the kingpin.
Edit.. there's also something about the axle width.. Check the link to 4.5" axles above.
And make use the axle is 8mm (5/16")

https://fulkit-skateboards.com/en/trucks-roller-quads/2159-6545-roll-line-blasterkiller-steel-truckunit.html
There's a Suregrip hanger that looks like this.

https://fulkit-skateboards.com/en/431-trucks-roller-quads
ACS used to make skateboard trucks
Powerdyne hanger looks pretty nice/clean

How's that RTS/RTX stuff! Front and back have different kingpin angles? I've only read about slalom stuff. Sounds interesting and trippy at the same time.

I take back what I said about Trackers above. Halftracks look really good with wide wheels. Early 70's vibe?
I like how wide wheels on skate trucks look like they're almost touch the yoke. But I also like the look of a skinny wheel.

This is making me rethink 95-97a wheels.. I've got some 30yr 92a's that I was gonna try out too..

1-2', 12-24" is probably the range but high-teens and up are longboard territory.
I've got a Powell Quicktail 69cm, think it's from the late 70's.
26-13/16" x 7-5/16" belly, 5-5/8" front truck width, 5-7/8" rear truck, old school mounting pattern..
13-3/8" wheelbase!! 3.5" nose, 4-7/8" tail

does anyone have ACE 11’s? I have indy 129’s on my 7.6” 5boro cruiser atm. but I’m trying to get that deep, squirrelly carve, never skated a pair of ace before. I believe the 11 are for 7.2” decks?
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Heated Wheel Polarizer 6 ply 6.0
Sure Grip Rollerskate Trucks
Bones Rough Riders 56mm
Powerdyne Hop Up Kit Bushings
Bones Swiss 6

I finally snagged a real Polarizer off Neil Blender. Heated Wheel is Blenders board company and he makes a small amount of these a year, and they're pretty much just available in 2 San Diego skate shops, so i'm beyond stoked.  Picked up a Vert board too which i'll post later.  Cant describe the ride on these things, too much fun.  Turns like nothing else and feels so comfortable. Slight convex, downturned nose and tail and super low to the ground, feels amazing under foot and you can turn so deep and tight. Rollerskate trucks turn much better than small skate trucks.  Nothing like it on a flowy small bowl, on a beer run or just pelting down some hills.  Watson Laminates presses the boards and the stain is so glossy and nice.  Stoked.

Yeah, it's Blender's company... I ordered that DVD he has on his website too, I hope it doesn't take 6 months to get it. I just meant I search for #theheatedwheel and #heatedwheel on instagram to see some narrow truck inspiration, not sure why I mentioned that, haha.

I'll probably get a pair of those sure-grip hangers to try out with a couple of different baseplates, hopefully it'll work out. I'll play around with some different bushing options as well. Here is the setup I was talking about, it sort of looks like there's some print on the hangers like on the suregrip but who the hell knows.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BRRtnOWDUuR/

The RTS/RTX setup is great. I didn't know anything about them at the time, I won an Alva '77 deck in a contest so I just got whatever was available at the shop. They're super fun, I bomb hills on them but they're carvier than any other truck I've used. It's a slalom truck after all..

I vaguely remember seeing these before but I randomly found these clips of Raven Tershy last night as well, seems like he got a hold of a polarizer a few years ago. That hill bomb is one of the gnarliest things I've seen, that run start and full pushes before the hill too... What the fffuck. Clearing the channel isn't bad either, he's insane.

Damn this thread makes me jealous of some of the mini cruisers you guys got. I'm a big guy, too heavy and bulky for small boards, I look ridiculous on a mini setup. Don't really feel comfortable on anything smaller than 8.25". Alas this thread has me dreaming of shopping down old decks and cutting roller skates
