Mellow kicks recommendations?
« on: April 08, 2020, 06:39:18 PM »
Today I had an epiphany. I do not like skating steep decks like I always thought I have, mellow kicks are the kicks for me.

Since the shops are closed and I can't go see for myself, I was wondering if any of you guys have recommendations for decks that have nice mellow kicks. I don't like too much concave either.

I ride an 8.5 typically and prefer BBS/Generator wood.

Thanks for reading.

Quasi decks are definitely very mellow. But I still can’t pop like Gilbert  :-[

The Krooked I'm on feels on the more mellow side. Pointy nose and mellow tail.

Currently skating a Toy board that’s got a nice mellow shape to it, the wood is PS Stix.

I’ve seen Baker boards specifically marketed as “mellow concave” with a big sticker stating so on it. You could look for one of those.
If your local isn’t doing online or curbside pickup but you want to support a real shop hit up 35thnorth.com. That’s where I’ve seen them.

This. Been skating Primitive due to flat boards with short wheelbase. My local was out so I tried one of the Jerry Hsu Baker Collabs with this sticker - such a perfect shape, loved that board.

Both the blood wizard decks I've tried have been mellow, especially for BBS.

BBS decks tend to be fairly steep, even though baker calls their concave mellow I'd personally say it's more of a medium, so trying some new wood might work better for you. DOA does some of their boards on the south central E mold which they call their "flat as fuck" decks. Highly recommend it if you want more of a traditional popsicle shape.

PS does some really great mellow decks...

- Quasi in general tend to be quite mellow.
- Toy Machine monster decks are usually on a nice mellow mold, my only gripe is that they're 14.5" wb.
- Some WKND decks have a mellow tail, the nose is almost always steep as fuck though.
- New Scumco Kyle Nicholson deck is one of the flat test and mellowest decks I own. I haven't skated it because it's 14.4" wb but I've heard that it's great (like all the broadcast series)
- New Scumco Brian Downey is flat and has a mellow tail, but the nose is more of a medium. I have skated that one and really liked it.

Sour has some pretty mellow shapes too but I'm not sure which one uses what. I think if you're a fan of bbs you'd like Jart wood, it's similarly stiff although the one I have feels a little thicker and heavier.

You can also search by concave on tactics but I don't know how accurate it is. I'm probably forgetting some but these are what came to mind. If you want pictures or more detailed measurements on any of these shoot me a PM.

Yeah I don’t know if I fully trust the concave measurements on tactics but it is nice to sorta get an idea.

Anyone know for sure if they use the mellow mold for their 8.75" pops? Symmetrical kicks?

I think a few companies use BBS's mellow mold. The nose/tail angle will be the same and you can usually see the "W" in the concave.
Primitive, April, Baker og
Maybe? sk8mafia, Numbers, some DLX?

Absolutely hate a steep nose and tail, cannot skate 'em, throws everything off for me.

Second the Tactics shop boards. They are my local. Just mellow enough for me. Skating the Leisure Series in 8.375 right now.

Just a heads up the Tactics Throwback Series had like 1 to 1/2 less fingers of flat so wasn't feeling that one.

Also had a Passport that was mellow, that thing was great.

Second this - and the Powell decks that are the same mold.   They have 18 degree kicks and quite a few fingers of flat. Many other companies have 20-22 degree ones.

DOA flat as fuck is about as mellow as you’re gonna get

Bonus is that it’s south central wood

Got a gently used FAF sent to me and I’m pretty excited about trying it out. Might set up now

people seem to have a moral objection to them for some reason, but if you like cheap decks that are mellow i think they are some of the best
