Guitar Thread
« on: May 13, 2020, 08:51:03 AM »
Hey pals, I want to dedicate a thread to guitars. Don't know if this is a thing but oh well.

I also need help choosing a guitar I want to buy.
I want to play surf style music but also have an acoustic type sound.
If that makes sense?
I was thinking a fender squire with out whammy bar
Or
A Yamaha acoustic guitar.

Either of those would be fine for a beginner usually if I'm buying gear or instruments it goes like this

1. Decide how much you are willing to spend
2. Go online to sweetwater or one of those big music sites and sort the products by price
3. Pick a couple you like the look of and research them online
4. Pick one and buy it.

I think musical instruments are worth doing payment plans for if you actually use it. When you start out quality isn't too important. After a year or 2 of playing look into an upgrade.
I'm normally against vibing and the like but Idk anymore with these perved out anime kids. Now I think we need to go back to robbing kids boards at gunpoint if they show up to the spot. Wheres young Stevi

i know it's a dead beaten horse, but you could always go for a entry level strat if you're not sure what you want. a strat will basically never let you down and cover most bases. personally i'd say for surf stuff you might want to check a jaguar/jazzmaster, but the bridge is iffy and you might need to replace it. i'm biased towards thosed but the vintage ones can be super heavy, also vintage thretboard angle might be uncomfortable if you play chord heavy. squier is a good budget option imo, also because you will always be able to get rid of them for a little change if they still work and look good and they can be a base to mod your first guitar.

for surf rock you need some sort of spring reverb effect for sure, even digital ones as pedals are pretty pricey. consider this when you choose an amp. you might want to look for one that has a fx loop or some sort of reverb and/or delay on board after amp boosts your signal.

i'd recommend getting either a squier strat or mustang and i.e. a blackstar id core beam modeling amp. good practice amp with lots of functions, might be useful even if you are not playing, it has okay sound, certainly alright for the start and comes with tons of modeling feats including reverb. if you keep playing a lot and have fun, you'll move up the gear chain naturally.

Thinline Telecasters are awesome. Semi hollow body, with a surf rock vibe. In fact, I might have to impulse buy a cheap squire one just thinking about it. Fenders tend to be nice beginner guitars since most of them have pretty thin necks that are easy on the hands. I have a Mustang that I got in the 90's that I still play and love too.

I‘m far from a specialist when it comes to guitars but I would always recommend getting something second hand and local from reverb or similar. Also I would always go with something at least semi acoustic so you can play without an amp.

I‘m far from a specialist when it comes to guitars but I would always recommend getting something second hand and local from reverb or similar. Also I would always go with something at least semi acoustic so you can play without an amp.

adding to this, some surf bands played es-350s, so a semi-hollow would fit the bill i guess. you probably want to look for some good quality replica model since gibsons are rather pricey guitars, es-350s especially.

here's what i would buy or check out rn if i was you, op:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MustCV60SB--squier-classic-vibe-60s-mustang-sonic-blue

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/IDCOREBEAM--blackstar-idcore-beam-2x10-watt-2x3-inch-bluetooth-combo-amp

with this you can start playing guitar, dabble in surf sounds, do other stuff. of course it won't sound like your going through an old fender amp with a real spring reverb, but you can get all that stuff down the line if you keep playing and want it.

the blackstar amp is just an easy way for you to get a lot of sounds and modulation without having to shell out a ton of money for pedals. it's loud enough for not just home use, has a record out that shouldn't require a dac or interface to connect to your pc if you want to record in a daw or audacity. if you want to start playing bass this can also work as a bass amp. so it jsut has great value for money. after you upgraded from this you can still use this as bluetooth speaker for your kitchen or whatever.

sorry for double posting but if you are strapped for cash, you can order a harley benton replica from thomann.
they have lots of model and the quality is really decent if you can live with the shameless replica factor.

Check out the danelectro convertible. It’s a hollowbody electric with lipstick pickups that sounds right up your ally. You can get one for around $300. A good starter amp is a fender mustang. It’s a modular amp so there’s hundreds of different sounds you can produce with it, it’s what I use for bedroom playing. You can find one of those for like $100

Thanks frank I'll stick with the fenders I found on sweetwater. As for amps I don't have a lot of cash atm for that black core amp. I have a peavy bass amp but it's kinda hot ass.

I would also add, buy an acoustic guitar. Any acoustic guitar practically is worth playing. I have a little kids size guitar I got for $35 brand new, and play it all the time. Great for camping too.

It might be hard to get a good surf and acoustic sound in one guitar, especially for cheap. You’d have to compromise on at least one sound. I’d just go with a Squier Jazzmaster or Jaguar. They’re amazing guitars for the price. It’s easier to come up on a cheap acoustic at a pawn shop or whatever

danelectro lipstick pickups offer a great surf sound.

I had an OG U1. It sounded great. There were some reissues that did not sound or feel good at all. Reportedly, there was a time where the reissues were Made in China - avoid those versions. If you're not in a hurry, you can find a decent Made in Korea Danelectro used for around $300 or less.

Viola is my personal favorite among the stringed instruments but cello would be a close 2nd.

I think Strat or Jazzmaster does “surfy” the best. I have a Strat and a Tele and it’s easier to get a defined reverb-y sound from every pickup. For an acoustic sound, roll back the tone slightly.

It’s not like you can’t do it with the Tele but the neck doesn’t have a ton of definition while the bridge can be thin. Generally, I like my Telecaster more these days but Tele Don’t Surf.

I’d go to one of those big stores like Guitar Centet or Sam Ash and try a bunch of different ones. There’s a lot of variation between models and price points and country of origin. Some feel really nice and others feel like dead wood. There’s variation in neck shapes/finishes and it’s hard to make blanket recommendations.

As much as I would like to go to those stores, I can't. I live in a small rural town in Iowa.

What's a good practice amp?

When I bought my guitar the shop gave me an Orange Mini Crush for free and while it's a cool little amp (on clean, any distorted tone sounds like a fart) and it has a tuner built in, it kinda sucks.

I'm looking at the Orange Crush 20RT.

I suck, so I mostly play stuff like Nirvana and other bullshit that all beginner guitar players play. I'd love to learn to play poppy stuff like The Smiths, but I think that's probably years down the road for me, haha. I'd honestly love to get a little tube amp, but it seems the decent ones are more money than I want to spend, and I honestly don't think I'm good enough to know the difference.

I always encourage people to get quality equipment when they can. Usually the gear that costs more holds it value better.

If you buy a $300 amp and decide you want rid of it you will probably only get half of what you paid.

If you buy an $1100 amp and decide you want rid of it you can probably get 1000 for it.

I'm not very knowledgeable about amps, but have played a Fender Blues Jr. for many years, including frequent practice and mic'ing while playing shows. Super versatile, never had to fix a thing on it. They've gone form $400 up to $600 since I bought it, but I'll bet you could find a used one for under $400. Works great from everything to clean acoustic sounds to distorted rock jammin.

I typically just plug directly into a preamp or audio interface and use plug ins. The UAD model of the RE-201 sounded identical to the one I had

lately I just plug right into my mpc-x which has a looper and bunch of wacky effects like frequency shifter and reverse reverb. I guess I'm a little spoiled but I like it that way  :)

Boss Katana 50. I read about it online about it being super versatile. So I bought it used for like 150€ and I love it.

Edit: to further elaborate, before that i had a vox VT40+ and then a Fender Mustang I. The katana blows them out the water.

I really wish I could fix my vox ac15😓that’s an amazing tube amp and I recommend it, clearer sound than a blues jr IMO.
Maybe I’ll fix mine if they do another round of stimulus checks. In other news I’m looking for a strat and I’m excited about that. I’ve only been playing my Gibson sg for the past 4 years so a change of things is gonna be nice.

I hope so, it probably is that. It fucked up because I was an idiot and didn’t realize the master volume was cranked up when I struck a chord and the tubes weren’t fully warmed up. A big spark came out the back of the amp.

Yeah, I’m going to assume you burnt out the tubes. That should be an easy enough fix.
