My theory is that these kids started at skateparks and got super good at transition first, hence the flowy style

I'd say it's a pretty solid theory. Proof is in the pudding with all those guys and Tom is god, sooooo...
Think about it - that sort of whip-out slam you get on transition, especially when you're new to it, is a major balance hurdle in skateboarding. If you have access to transition from when you start skateboarding, and get comfortable so that you're not likely to whip out much anymore, that balance applies to everything. Less likely to get banana peeled on street too. Obviously, everyone is different, but it's cool to see how that sort of skate upbringing can lead to similar styles.
