P2 cameras curiosity

So the question is, why the skateboarding industry use such an old camera with old and expansive technlogy and not something more recent?

I’ve noticed a lot of filters using newer cameras with p2 and sd compatibility...

Because the best HD 16:9 fisheye is the xtreme.
Also why the vx1000 still ? Because the MK1 is the best 4:3 fisheye.

If century made a good fisheye for newer/tinier cameras using a 62mm lens diameter, there could be a new standard.
I think a lot of people would be happy to leave those old and clumsy P2 cameras behind.

HD seems to be split between the Panasonic/Xtreme setup and the mirrorless DSLR and Sony camcorder two-separate-cameras deal rn. In a recent interview I read Davonte Jolly describes being stuck in the Bay Area with with no cameras or lenses. Duffel lent the group two cameras, but the two fish eyes cost him 10,000 fucking dollars because century stopped making em right then. So maybe things will change soon

a big reason is the CCD sensor. modern CMOS sensors not only have a different look but also most of the time have a jello effect (rolling shutter). CCD sensors were used in the VX1000 and the P2 cameras so they are in the same ball park if a 'look' is concerned. newer global shutter cmos sensors are coming out but there still isn't one in a quick to use camcorder package. if you want that clean 'filmic' 4K look, new cameras are where its at, but if you want the 'video' look and a fisheye that gets the most of of a 16:9 image, the P2 cams are the way to go.

Friend pointed out that a lot of  the 'cooler' filmers all film with the Panasonic, and that some of these brands even ban the use of SLR cameras. Not sure we'll see a change anytime soon.

P2 is a very durable technology. Made for electronic news gathering. Professional level, broadcast quality.
HPX and especially HVX are built like tanks and much less fragile than a VX. Solid state recording at such a high bit rate (low compression) is ideal for skating.
720/60p is crucial to capturing fast-moving objects.
Scene files and getting "that look" (some call it a filmic look; heavier shadows, very good colors and skin tones).
And yes, the Xtreme. Which has set the standard of what filming HD skating (and action sports in general) should be.
There are lots of P2 cameras on the market. Many if not most colleges and universities purchased a fleet of these in the mid to late 2000s and many students were trained on these cameras. They completely reshaped the independent cinema scene.

I would love to try a CX-350 when they come down in price. Versus a DVX200, which I'm actually less interested in

HPX and especially HVX are built like tanks and much less fragile than a VX.

The lens unit (zoom especially) is really fragile and break very easily when it gets hit.
this part is way more fragile than vx's lens unit.

vx break because they are really old, not because they were made poorly.
