Forced Multis
« on: June 06, 2020, 03:59:27 AM »
Who are the biggest offenders?

I like to rip on Eminem for these but I'm sure there are worse examples.

I suffered through a couple years of watching acapella rap battles on youtube so I've heard some awful examples but who are the worst spitters on big budget recordings?

For those who aren't sure what a multi is it's a multi-syllabic rhyme or more specifically a rhyme where every syllable rhymes.

Well, when you say a "forced multi," do you mean it doesn't rhyme perfectly? Or the words rhyme perfectly but it has no real meaning? Or both? Like what's an example for you of a forced multi, from Eminem or anyone? Like it doesn't flow?

Like specifically...the majority of the multis in that song you posted are not what I would call "forced"...

the rhyme is perfect but it has no meaning. Sometimes forced multis are irrelevant other times they are relevant but terrible.

Rap God is a good example of track that is multi heavy but avoids forced multis. most of rapgod follows the same theme and the flow is maintained through out the track. A lot of Em's other stuff has great examples of irrelevant multis strung together for the sake of keeping the rhyme scheme going, its brutally autistic.

cramming multis into a verse is a decent way to show off your rhyming vocabulary but it usually ruins the flow and distracts from the beat. Pure multis usually sound unnatural I try to structure my bars so that it sounds like something you actually say in real life.

I would say that Canibus' entire career, after his first album, contains some really forced multis, some to the point of embarrassment. I use "forced multis" to mean the multis don't rhyme perfectly (meaning the flow is terrible) or they rhyme pretty well but the sense they make is almost gibberish...or both. And I think some of Canibus' rhymes as his career went on are filled with the biggest offenders of both definitions, sometimes both at the same time...

On the flipside, I think someone like Kool G Rap almost never has forced multis. I think he's one of the best in the game at it...

So why did you use that as an example?

Look, nitpick all you want, but there is no way that Eminem is one of the worst offenders with forced multis. Some of his multis verge on brilliance. He's up there with G Rap, Pun and Rakim as one of the best to ever spit multis. I don't think that can be debated, especially not when you have guys like Canibus and Tech N9ne out there who are sloppy as fuck.

Chino XL is arguably my favorite (underground) rapper of all time...Em pretty much bit his whole style...but I acknowledge that sometimes Chino will drop a multi that seems a bit forced...

Edit: Also, when did rap battles officially decide to collectively not have beats and have everyone just spit accapellas? That was a bad decision, imo, amost encouraging forced multis. I remember the Blaze battles, like almost every battle back in the day, utilized instrumental beats. Should have kept that going. These acapellas are for the birds...

Canibus made the mistake of stepping in the ring vs Dizaster who absolutely murdered him.

I have listened to a few Canibus tracks and didn't mind his flow but this battle makes him seem really really handicapped. Admittedly the format is weird and takes a lot of memory skills and crowd control it was brave of him to even try.

I'm not familiar with Chino XL but have heard the name tossed around. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to looking up music. Any recommendations?

latest thing i've heard with good multis is a random thing done by a Canadian battle rapper named Charron. I usually hate his bars due to his swag and arrogance and the fact that hes a skinny white kid from Ottawa but the boy can spit.

Chino's whole debut album, "Here To Save You All," is pretty much a classic.

His second album has a lot of fire shit too.

Canibus dropped some of the most legendary multis on the mixtape circuit leading up to his debut album. I mean top notch mind-blowing stuff. But his battle with LL just took all the vitality out of him and he became a former shell of himself. At some point, it became pretty clear he was just rapping to pay the bills because he was putting out so much subpar material...

I'd like to officially change my answer. Charron is the worst offender of forced multis. That was terrible, bro. This guy is on a tirade about Carole Baskin for minutes and you're throwing shade at Eminem's multis?

How old are you?

You need to right this ship before I or someone else advises you to focus your account.

dope i'll check out the rest of his first album later. Nothing caught my attention in those songs as being super forced. The beats could be better but I almost always say that

Dilla did the second beat.

Not having the best beats is a criticism Chino has faced throughout his career.

I think Kutmaster Kurt and Nick Wiz handled most of the beats on Chino's first album. I think they did a pretty good job.

Rap and Hiphop are a pretty small part of my overall music taste. I just like samplers and drummachines if I'm being honest. Flow and vocal tone are more important to me than lyrical complexity and multis.
