First Favorite Skater
« on: June 28, 2020, 12:29:33 AM »
Who was your first favorite skater? Lots of people act like it was someone epic, but I doubt it.
Mine was Tosh Towsend, which is pathetic since Sight Unseen, my first movie, was fucking rad, and featured some of the best skaters ever (e.g., Cariel, Sanchez, Kirchart). But Tosh was 2 years older than me and seemed to be living my dream.

Hard to remember because this was a LONG time ago, but I think it was Tom Knox (original version). I remember doing really horrible stiff-legged hurricanes trying to look like him. I didn’t but I thought I was sick.

B.A. as soon as I saw his part in Welcome To Hell. Didn't start skating until 2001, and a family friend gave me a bunch of old videos and it was in the pile. The cab flip on flat sealed the deal.

Next favourtie skaters were Dill and Boulala after watching Photo and Sorry.

Bob Burnquist. I could probably say Tony Hawk as well, but I had a perfect seat at the 2001 X Games in Philly and witnessed his legendary run that won him the gold medal (over an also incredible run from Bucky Lasek). Chris Cole was and is probably my favorite street skater ever.

Peter Ramondetta. Circa "It's Time" was my first video and I was hooked on his skating! He had power and finesse, but also just did his own thing, you know? Juat blue collar type, to the point, skating.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.

First video was Sorry/Really Sorry 2pack. Had been skating for a while but didn't get serious or really into videos till a couple years later. I thought Arto was the best. Still love him to this day. A

Neil Blender.
First and current.

Edit: If I am to be honest, my FIRST favorite was Duane Peters, but given his current state, I’m too ashamed of myself to confess that publicly. Screw that kook, I’m backing Neil.

When I was like eleven I had this Ed Templeton phase, but the thing is my introduction to him was through the videos Berzerker, This Is Skateboarding and Good and Evil because those were some of the first videos I had access to. I had no idea he was considered an old pro and dropping some of his last parts at the time.

Lance Mountain. He was on the cover of the first issue of Thrasher I ever saw. Back then exposure to skate media was almost impossible to come by and so he was some kind of superstar to me. Plus those dreamy eyebrows...

I really wanted to learn how to surf and since we lived in Boston that wasn't really an option so I got curious about skateboarding and we rented Shackle Me Not from the local video store. SMN was the first skate video I saw and although I had no real way to comprehend what I was seeing Matt Hensley stood out. His Hokus Pokus footage is still how I wish I skated today.
