The drought
« on: July 07, 2020, 07:12:00 AM »
I’m sure I’m not the only one noticing the lack of usual product in shops lately. Figured it’s all related to manufacturing shutting down to protect employees from COVID. I really want to keep supporting my local shop rather than buy what I usually skate online but I’m wondering if anyone has info about when the drought will end?

Most distributors have nothing right now.

There is not one deck on eastern skate supply, AWH has barely anything, DLX, Theories, Polar all have nothing .

Wheels and trucks too. Weird times

“Crazy” they called me, when I panic-purchased 5 decks with a chunk of my COVID stimulus check.
“He’s gone mad” they said, when I bought multiple sets of trucks.
“Perhaps we should intervene” they wondered, when I stocked up on four sets of F4s & a couple sets of Bones Swiss.
Well who’s crazy now?!?

I know, I know... it’s still me.
But at least this nut-job will be set up for a while.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me.  You think you got me?

I just blew a bearing any chance you could send me 1 Swiss bearing?  I don’t want to mix my Swiss with the crap I have on standby.  I stocked up late on garbage bearings.  Shake junt, don’t judge I wasn’t thinking rationally!

Yeah I feel silly for not stocking up on stuff, gonna have to probably buy from multiple shops to get my preferred parts.

We need to know what overseas production has been like in 2020. Maybe factories haven't been producing.

You can buy all the Santa Cruz boards you want right now. I bet this is the best business they've had in 30 years.

I can't even find spitfire tablets under 53mm for sale anywhere.

This drought is gonna take a while to get through, and it could get worse if Mexico/China/Southern Califonia get shut down again.

I panic bought some Spitfire  F4s for sure...

I have back up sets of  54 classics, 55 tablets, 56 classic wides and 58 classics sitting in the basement to get me through End Times. Not sure I could ride any other wheel at this point...

Paradeworld is a good way to buy product online if you wanna support small shops in general and your local is having no luck with the restocks.

Production stopped at most manufacturing (Powell actually had to move out of the building they've been in for decades), so it's a bit of a delayed effect since distributors were normally stocked until they couldn't get product anymore. Production has started back up in some places, but at a reduced rate. BBS, for example, was operating at 25% last I heard. It's taking a long time for deck brands to get their orders from them.

I work at a shop and we're busier than ever but unfortunately have limited stock to offer. So many new skaters (many female) setting up their first complete, and trucks have been the hardest thing to get so they're ending up with neon orange Silver trucks and shit.  :o

Yes, almost all distributors are out of decks right now, it's wild. They go right out the door again as soon as they come in so nothing is even making it to the shelf to sit. It's been great for selling off sale decks or anything that wasn't moving previously. If there's not another big shutdown, I'd say things are already slowly on the way back to normal for product availability, but it's gonna take a while. Might be slim pickings until next year sometime.

I'm actually looking forward to skating my stockpiled old but not unusable gear down to dust. Still hope things get back into production soon tho.

Weird, tmk DLX is up and running, ermico is making wheels/ trucks at full capacity. I'm sure shipping is getting delayed.

I have a backup deck and a spare set of wheels. If that's not enough to last until the next DLX shipment, I'm afraid I'll have to start dressing like an outdoor enthusiast, because I'll just be outdoors as an entire activity.

It's mostly fine here in Europe.

It's strange for once access to product and second pic from distros has been of benefit. Seems like most shops got big dlx shipments recently.

Lots of other generator deck companies too

I've always had the terrible mind set of "If it's on sale, I should buy it now" for pretty much everything.
When stock is limited my pile of oniony wheels I got for cheap are looking pretty nice to everyone.
