Whose SOTY year wasn't their best year
« on: August 02, 2020, 01:18:54 AM »
Which SOTYs had a better year than the year they won SOTY? Maybe there year where they threw down harder than the year they won SOTY but someone threw down even harder, kinda like Suciugate.

The award is silly anyway because people like SBN have won it

Definitely. And then you look at the list of legends who didn't win it... It shouldn't be taken too seriously, just a bit of fun :)

Grant. His skating was better in any of the 3-5 subsequent years after he won.

(And Busenitz should have gotten it in 2011)

06 shoulda been Jerry.

Also, David Gonzalez was a terrible pick. All I can tell you about this dude is that he has a fetish for rock and roll and he sticks his tongue out a lot. Couldn't tell you anything about his skating.

Jerry should have gotten it. And for good measure, fuck Emerica for dropping him.

I guess Jerry wasn't thrasher enough. His SOTY trip would've been awesome but pretty weird for thrasher. Then again SBN was even less hellride. Anyone know who went on his SOTY trip?

Tony Trujillo won it the year PJ WHL came out.

Danny way won it for inventing snowboarding in 2004 while Duff man had two heavy parts and shoulda won it that year.

SBN rules and deserved his.

The obvious is Koston who IMO had a better 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007

Ishod could've won any year in the 2010's

Theres also an argument that mid 2000s BA is his best self

Daewon, Ave on the list too but those awards felt like lifetime achievements.

Edit: lol @ the posts that understood the question wrong.

Definitely Ishod

Never understood the SBN hate for getting SOTY. He had 4 parts that year, yes?
There was no wire. Clark's planet needed him.

wait is that right? edit: damn it is. as soon as I saw that I was like oh then the Sorry year must have been Rowley's but he won the year before Arto. so there's two answers.

i also always have to remind myself that Reynolds won his before Baker/any of the classic Emerica videos.

While I don't think he would deserve SOTY any other year, even perhaps the year he got it...
But since the question is phrased who had better skate years other than the year they won, I would have to go with Tony Hawk. He got the first SOTY in 1990, and had had many, many better years since then.

In fact, I would argue that Tony had had the most better years other than his SOTY year.
Opinions?

Shit, SBN continues to prove time and time again that he fucking rips at everything. He was the standout that year and I'm glad he got picked. It also showed you didn't have to be the biggest name to get it. You just had to skate at that level.

egh. depends on how you want to grade it. SOTY is kind of thrasher's version of "video part of the year" and/or most prolific skater and late 80s early 90s was when Powell Peralta was churning out videos.

but if we are talking impact on skateboarding and culture in general, has any skater ever had a bigger year than he did in 99? can't think of anyone even in that same conversation.

Tony Hawk in 1990:
Only won sad Del Mar and NSA contests
Vert was dying
On his first and his shortest marriage to date
looked like a woman

Tony Hawk in 1998/1999
Did 900
Won the Xgames
Won Vans Triple Crown
Birdhouse The End  came out
Tony Hawk Pro Skater Came Out
On his second and longest marriage to date
Looked like an alpha male

I'll let you decide.

David Gonzalez. Like wtf. That was the hardest thrasher has ever kooked it.
Needless to say that the fact that Guy never got it is criminal. They wouldn’t even give him a lifetime achievement one the way they did with AVE.
I think it’s safe to say that thrasher is probably the kookiest mag out there. Ban me.

This. I’d also argue that Reynolds and Ishod would be much more acceptable 2x winners than Chris Cole.
