i got a re-furbished Dell Latitude with a Intel HQ processor and a ton of memory on a SSD. some pal shared a link a while back about a reddit thread that shows you how to download Premiere for free. so I just run the HVX with a couple 16gb cards and transfer the clips using a mini-USB cable to an external, then bring in clips off the external to edit.

Used Final Cut 7 for many years, made the switch over to Premiere. It's nice after getting used to it, wasn't a fan of Final Cut 10. Lately, I have been using Davinci Resolve made by Black Magic Design. The free version is nice and there's an upgraded pay version. Probably the best free video editing software I've come across.
