I wonder how his foot got caught, someone either tried to snare him (which is super illegal)
or it got caught in a fence.
Ive seen deer missing a hoof before that were pretty fast, like some of those 3 leg dogs that manage but this poor bastard wasn't moving very well. I was afraid he was too young but once I got a good look at him I knew he was older than I thought and super malnourished.

shot a 3 legged deer last week, spike buck (horns were long and straight so it's usually a cull deer to shoot that you don't want to breed)
with a remington r700 bolt action chambered in .270
The poor deer was old and so thin since he was hobbling around, it's better to go out wuickly than of starvation or a pack of coyotes.

Weirdest shot of my life, he and another buck were in the brush about 100+ yards out and could smell me due to the win so they wouldn't come out of cover. He was with a healthy young buck that I wouldn't be a shooter.
I couldn't see this deer for the life of me and it was about dusk. Luckily I had my dad spotting w binos cause the sun kept getting in the scope glass, I would see the deer for a split second then he would dip into the trees.
I finally got a good look at him and took the shot which i had very low confidence in due to the conditions, my weird ass sitting position, and time I spent lining up the shot. He was facing me head on and lifted up his head so I got him in the base of neck.

Sorry if this is too much, I used to HATE hunting but after spending years managing this land and bringing up a healthy population it feels good to eat meat you shot. My gf was complaining and I was like look you eat fast food daily, this deer died instantly and lived a good life. Those cows and chickens are living a way worse life

Nice! I hope you had some fresh medallions.

Not sure about your area, but it is possible it was snared legally.

I see it around here once in awhile, because we have licensed trappers mainly looking for beaver, mink etc. The indiginous folk even set snares for bears. So if that's a thing your way, that could explain a 3 legged deer.

I find it odd you hunt and your gf isnt cool with it. Does she eat deer? Just so odd, usually if the significant other hunts the other is ok with it, or they both hunt.

She doesn't eat it nor does she complain but she's not into it.

This pandemic was so crazy at one point I had more meat than cash and was reading venison for weed!?

damn man, i appreciate and respect this, and definitely sounds like a righteous kill and incredible shot...100+ yards is gnarly to us city-locked fools. as i get older, getting on some acres is the plan for sure, but for now, i'm lucky to have an indoor range that boasts a 50-yard rifle range.

funny thing is, i've been a full-time vegetarian/part-time vegan for about 30 years--still, i've always had an inner longing to hunt...dare i say instinctual? although i figure that my first kill would absolutely crush me, and i'd want to sell all of my guns immediately after...i'm half joking i guess here. i'm confident if things really got crazy, and the luxury of being a vegetarian was a thing of the past, i could do what i need as far as hunting my own protein.

i love when vegetarians/vegans in total urban/suburban settings criticize hunting and hunters--the former being about the most unnatural and unsustainable model of living there is...

I'm gonna be honest it is hard to do at first. Gets easier with time.
I just try and be as respectful as I can. Only take good/ethical shots.
But you will start shaking so bad your first time, buck fever.
I know this is dark but it makes me think about how crazy someone probably feels before pulling the trigger on a human. I don't think I could do it unless it was me vs them situation.

not sure if any of the heads posting in this thread have seen this young lady's channel, but amongst other things it is "minority and lefty friendly" and although i'm yet to explore too deeply, a couple of friends have recommended it to me:

http://www.youtube.com/c/TacticoolGirlfriend/featured

here's one on "Dressing for the Range and Weather," and it's easy to see early on that she's doing her own thing apart from the mass of white, male wingnuts in the "gun community"

i'm looking forward to exploring more of her videos when i have time...

edit: here's an interview the InRange guy did with her recently:

tacticoolGF is alright, but I'm not wicked into her. A trans woman hosting a gun channel is definitely leaps and bounds away from the majoritarian right wing gun programs on youtube. She's definitely not MTG/Boebert/Palin.

My association with TGF is however tied with Socialist Rifle Association and online leftish gun talk via reddit, which after a while, I find incredibly tiresome, useless, and full of tacticool larping. Nonetheless, she's a new voice that might bring hope to others who can't find it.

i appreciate the info--as i said above, i don't know too much about her and have not had a chance to explore much, but plan to.

i know it's a bit predictable for someone my age to say it, but i do not mess with social media of any kind, and other than Slap, i don't frequent any forums such as reddit, and what you say above seems to confirm the soundness of this policy...although i'm sure i have lots in common with many people in the Socialist Rifle Association, i still could never imagine joining...

by the way, fuck House Resolution 127 (HR 127, that's Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas' mess) and all of the other recent "gun control" bills that have been introduced, and all of the privileged hypocrites who plague what passes for "the left" in this country, for trying to disarm the poor and working masses of this country.

my biggest reservation to gun control is how a racist country would enforce it. theoretically, yes it would be a nice dandy world if everybody put the guns down and sang kumbaya but thats not gonna happen. with major gun control legislation comes the reality that it will only control the poor, the working class, the people of color. im a pro-gun commie i guess. i think everybody should know how to at least shoot a gun. its a difficult issue tho and i dont really talk about it this much so it doesnt make a lot of sense but im bored and this is slap so whatever.

What a fuckin goober Rick is. Dingleberries like him give normal owners a bad rep. I have some for home protection/target shooting. Growing up in the Midwest they've been around me my whole life with all the hunting that goes on.
Ammo is scarce everywhere it seems. .357 is about $50 a box where I can find it which is nuts. .556 is even worse. Won't be heading to the range anytime soon forsure lol

i just took delivery of this Mossberg 590 A1 (12 gauge) from my friendly local FFL that handled the transfer. i purchased this lovely brute on GunBroker, from a retired engineer who customizes new Mossbergs as a hobby. he installed all of the Magpul furniture and NDZ custom stuff (cerakote tactical safety and orange hardcoat anodized stop), and i added the Surefire light.

if you haven't messed with GunBroker.com, i highly recommend exploring, it's easy to get lost in there, but the auction prices do get crazy for some things these days, depending on what you're going after...

Man, PPT/gunbroker deals are stupid taxed where I live. Can't find an FFL to do a transfer for less than a hundred bucks, plus w California DROS and taxes, its just not worth it to me.

I went in the gun store a couple days ago because I want a ruger takedown 10/22 with wood furniture. They didn't have one, but the glocks were plentiful compared to the past year and under $600. 9mm and 556 were nowhere to be seen but 500rd 223 buckets were available for 50cpr. Plenty of slugs and buckshot again for pre pandemic prices as well. Larue had a decent sale.going on with their completed AR uppers recently. I've constantly read/heard only + about the quality of their work. Time isn't right yet. No point in buying something for which ammo is gonna run me an arm and a leg. Another 9 or 22, I've got that shit for days, but the 556/223 platform isn't there yet.

one of my oldest friends just bought a house in AZ after living in CA for about 20 years at least partly for some of the bullshit you allude to here. it actually seems like most GunBroker sellers say that they won't ship to CA outright.

things do seem to be stabilizing in some cases regarding availability, although prices do have some catching up to do. i know i mentioned 1000-round loose packs of 115 grain CCI fmj in another thread, that friends and i have been going in on together for about 55 cents a round. i know that's crazy compared to pre-pandemic prices, but that still didn't seem bad these days. i recently found a far better deal from a place called WeaponsPro, who generally have pretty fair prices. it looks like they're out of those 1000-round loose packs, but here's CCI Blazer brass in 9 mm for around 40 cents a round:

https://www.weaponspro.com/catalog/ammo/handgun?brand_id=158&caliber_id=99&page=1

by the way, speaking about CA and the old friend i mention above, i've been ordering plenty of ammo from LAX Ammo, throughout the past year or so, and my friend was laughing about how much easier it is for me to get lots of ammo from them, back here around Detroit, than him, who lives minutes from their flagship store...

hey Pug, you know brother, if i'm understanding your question, that is an enormous question to answer.

me personally, in 9mm i have Glock, 26, 17, and 45.

i don't have a rifle in 9mm, but i have what one would call a "pistol caliber carbine" in 9 mm, and that is the Palmetto State Armory AKV in 9mm. there's a link to Garand Thumb's review earlier in this thread i think, but just in case:

it's fussy about anything other than fmj though. but shit, if you have the money, it's hard to beat the HKs...

Those look so fun... I'll have to wait until the courts rule on CA's large capacity magazine whathaveyou.

What actual chance do you think there is of the large capacity magazine becoming legal in CA?

Can't buy the ammo online, but there is a store fairly close to me, I'll go check them out soon.

Its all up in the air right now, imo. Supreme Court will most likely hear gun cases - if I'm not mistaken the courts have argued that banning folks under 21 from buying a handgun is a no-go.

As for features... If you bought your high cap mags "before" the ban, you're good to go. Regarding the foolish AR fins, I've seen some really, really, for what they are, neat ones that are simply a piece of kydex with 2 straps that wrap and button around the grip. Easy on, easy off, meets the requirement.

Really though, idk what its like it populated California. I can't imagine having to always go to a pay for the privilege range rather than on our gov land.

And about the 9mm carry over, that was my first thought and still, 22LR meets the pistol/wheel gun/long gun categories. And.its.cheapest 8)

Yeah unfortunately there is not a ton of gov land to shoot on here in San Diego. You gotta go east into the high Desert or the inland empire. You might be able to shoot on camp pendleton, but that requires getting a pass and dealing with the guards on base and a bunch of stuff. Other than that it's all private ranges in Oceanside or San Marcos

it's interesting watching all of the legal shit unfold in CA for you all...i get why people are calling Judge Benitez the patron saint of the 2A out there. most people assume his latest ruling on the "assault weapon" ban was exactly to get that in front of the Supreme Court...

Yeah I'm curious to see how it will all unfold, but i also am loathe to cheer on these right wing judges, even if i do want a lot of the CA laws to be overturned

copy that Dale, absolutely. but, all of the privileged white hypocrites pushing this "gun control" mess are correspondingly pushing those of us on the left in the working class, into ally positions with some on the right--i swear, this is one reason why the shooting ranges i frequent are more diverse places than the university campuses where i teach.

did y'all hear about all of those public defenders in NY pushing for the supreme court to "to eviscerate gun regulations," specifically NY's absurdly racist and classist restrictions on concealed carrry?

eh, y'all remember when Frantz Fanon said this?

"The unpreparedness of the educated classes, the lack of practical links between them and the mass of the people, their laziness, and, let it be said, their cowardice at the decisive moment of the struggle will give rise to tragic mishaps."
