RIP Brendan Sohar
« on: August 21, 2020, 06:48:08 PM »
One of our beloved Vancouver locals has sadly passed away, just found out today. Brendan Sohar was a great, quirky dude who was an integral part of the skate scene here and a great photographer. I can still hear his devilish little giggle. Gonna miss him for sure. He had some serious mental health issues that plagued him later in life, among other things, but I'm glad I got the chance to chat with him a bunch of times when he would swing by the Plaza in recent years. RIP Sohar - you will be missed.

Should this be pinned? Brendan was a well respected photographer in Canadian skateboarding during the 90's and early 2000's. As Hastie's post mentions, he was also the guy who gave a lot of skaters their first break by shooting them for magazines when some other photographers might stick to bigger names. I'll see what magazines I have saved and repost some pics he shot later.

Just for a bit of context, this photo made me think in that before Antisocial, Vancouver was a Red Dragon town.  The exception was what was going on in White Rock lead by Jon West, Brendan was the guy documenting this....he was a huge part of that scene.

Things of course loosened up and Brendan shot photos of everyone leading to the photo with Hastie, he was down for everyone....

Sucks this stuff happens but he won't be forgotten....ill try and dig up some shots....

rip in peace sohar.

Brendan was the first skate photographer to shoot a sequence of me that got used in Concrete Powder magazine, sometime around '93 or '94. He showed up at New Spot and it was just me and maybe one or two other people, he was motivated to get shots enough to come up and ask me if he could get pics of me doing a fakie nosegrind 180 out in the middle of the small ledge.
we also connected again wayy later and got a backtail photo for color magazine.

Brendan was the only real skate photographer to ask me to shoot with them when I was a kid. Thankfully, that photo never ran. For some reason we shot multiple rolls of a roast beef to fakie on a wooden QP in my hometown. I was wearing white Axions, a baby blue Barry Sander jersey and a white flex fit.

I hope Sohar found some peace. The last decade was really hard on him. Unfortunately, most of the his originals are lost but there'll always be old Concrete mags floating around with his work.

RIP to a someone who really helped lay the foundation up here.
