Your favorite skate photos of all time
« on: September 04, 2020, 07:34:07 AM »
I have some photos from years prior to these that meant a lot to me, but these are my faves that are really etched in my brain. I have other favorites from 86-90 that my kid self loves, but 34 years into skating, these are the ones I always go back and look at still.

Mullen - the angle, lighting and that era:

Wade Speyer - the gear, the hands, the style. Lighting (recurring theme in my faves):

Jason Rogers - loved H-Street. I had those shoes, thought this was the sickest photo. had on my wall for years

Frankie Hill - there was an old rail shot I loved, but this one always stuck out because of the close up of the flip.

Jason Lee - I tried to copy the clothes he had in this, but my parents didn't buy me shit so I had a light grey Powell shirt I would wear to go with my army green pants. I was extremely psyched that Lee rode Indys

Klein - There were 2 older pics of Jeremy that I really love but the flip on this was just awesome. And the shape of the board. I tried to copy Jeremy's trick selection a lot. 14 year old me was bummed that he did not ride Indys because I wanted us to have more in common. The mind of a 14 year old.

Jordan Richter - The lighting, the trick, the hands, feet on the edge. Small wheels. I also thought it looked cool because he want's really wearing "skate gear" or something. Cool photo

Way - That era, spot, the angle, the shoes, the trick. Sick!

Guy - Always liked the way this one looks. Seeing those Ventures was cool. The face and the trick

Sheffey - enough said

Lennie - I am a huge Lennie fan

Heath - the colors of the black and red, the trick, the background.

Gino - Love the switch flip, the shoes, the flip of the board, the background, and recall thinking his tattoo looked neat also.

Cardiel - Wide shot to see the spot, Cardiel's style. The man

RIP to a legend.
Something about this photo of Jeff evokes all that was gnar about late 80s vert skating.
The height.
The inverted position in air.
The expression.
The famous locale (Cedar Crest).
I have a lot of faves and THIS one is for sure up there towards the top of my list.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me.  You think you got me?

That Gino one posted definitely is up there, as always you have great taste boomer. Any wade photo is gold as well. These just come off the top of my head. That sheffey photo is what made me start running only four bolts to a board.

I love this one. Mike O'Meally is meant to be super sound, too.

I bought the print of this when Skin did the auction three years ago in Swansea.

I really enjoyed the series with Leo Sharp shooting with Leo Valls on the article  'Skateurbanism' by Kingpin.

i don’t think any of you are real, i think slap was invented by my mom to make me think people want to talk to me

really bummed the day I posted in this thread, the website skateboardingstartswithes.com got deleted and I can't find the picture (circa 1997) where eric koston is doing a frontside air on a vert ramp. Anybody have that photo?

ok boomer, have you read that Brennand Schoeffel interview on chromeball? He talks about watching Hensley get the photo:

My next question. Because I know you’re in the background there.

Yeah, that’s Steve Ortega, myself and Tim Hadden, who’s nickname was Ned. Another Vista guy, he did Assault Skateboards.
That’s right there on the 805. Dan found that one, too. Of course. We’d gone by that thing a million times but it never even dawned on us to try skating it.
But what people don’t understand about that photo — what Matt is doing there is far scarier and gnarlier than you could ever imagine. Because the concrete on that thing was so rough. There was really no way you could skate on it.

So how did that happen?

Dan, over the course of a week or two, gathered up 4 x 8 sheets of plywood and hoisted them up there. Laying them all down like you see. But you needed a 10 or 15-foot ladder at the base in order to get up there. Somehow, Dan would climb up there on his own with all that wood and lay everything out so we could skate it. I still don’t understand how he did it.
But the thing is, that plywood wasn’t secured to anything. So anytime you stopped or moved, it would all slide around. I could barely even roll up the thing without totally freaking out. I remember doing the tiniest ollie… I was sure that I was about to slide off the edge and die. But Matt ripped it, which was crazy to watch. And that photo is just classic.
Nobody knew that I was in the background in that one either, which is rad.

In 89 maybe 90 I was at another kid's apartment and he had some skateboarding magazines. I didn't skate yet, I was a comix weirdo and was probably there to trade. I saw a Natas photograph that really drew me in. I'm not sure which specific Natas picture it was - I think it was one of the above wallrides or where it looks like he's on the fence - and I tripped out on how much the image of Natas resembled one of Spiderman. The wall aspect obviously but also the hyper-emphasized body language - the dramatic posturing of limbs and digits coiled or extended. I'm sure other skaters saw the correlation and have commented on it before. Until recently I'd forgotten about its effect on me and how magical skateboarding photographs are.

There are so many classic BA and Hubba Hideout pics, but this is probably my favorite.

More recently, I find myself staring at this one for prolonged periods every time it pops up.

Blown away when I found out who shot it. Made me a bigger fan of Lance and Guy.

This sequence and kit...Pink stains are the best and the red/green combo is perfect.
