Nerve Damage on Foot
« on: April 14, 2020, 10:32:22 AM »
Anyone ever experience a sort of burning / tearing pain on their foot when stretching your leg outward / pointing your foot inward ( the motion to flick an Ollie) ?

It occurs on my left foot ( regular skater) and there is no pain unless specifically moving my foot in that motion or stretching it out that way . No health insurance so can’t see a doctor ( and probably couldn’t now anyway because of COVID)

Can’t recall an incident skating that made it happen. Just realized the pain a few weeks back and have been trying to rest it since periodically stretching it to see if the pain is still there and today pain was radiating on my 4th and 3rd toe as well while I was just sleeping in bed.

It’s a burning sensation that feels like tendons are being torn when stretched , but my googling has led me to believe it could be some sort of nerve damage .

Any help would be appreciated as I really want to get healthy and return to skating by the mid spring / summer

Have you tried massage or rolling out the front and outer lower leg muscles on a foam roller or tennis ball?

If it hurts you should stop doing it for a couple weeks. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it's better to be safe. Especially if you don't have insurance.

that has helped me release pain like the one described. I use a rolling pin from my kitchen to do it. I do it before and after skating if I a having problem. If it really hurts alot I wouldn't skate though. Maybe just do the rolling and take a break from skating for a little bit. Don't skate through pain. You will pay for it in the long run.

Yup seriously, don't try to "skate through it." I had a problem with my achelies tendon last year. I ignored it initially, but in the end, it cost me a month off the board when it could have been a week off.

Yeah I took the first few weeks of quarantine off to try and heal it , but the pain is still there . I had a video doctors appointment with a local clinic who recommended a x-ray to check for minor fractures , but nothing was seen .

I am going to a foot specialist next week to see if an MRI is going to be needed.

It’s been over a month since I’ve tried to Kickflip / Ollie . I have been rolling around on the board to not go crazy and I can Skate switch and nollie without anything hurting , as well as slappy crook on curbs , but something is definitely really fucked up. Hopefully not permanently, but at this point I’m willing to go into debt just to kickflip again in my future

just to give an update.

an orthopedic doctor had no diagnosis after getting an MRI done, and after a Steroid injection / Anti-Inflammatory Injection into the area that has serious pain. Says it could be some nerve damage/tendon damage but that nothing could be seen on the MRI .

The fact that the pain only occurs on my foot when straightening my leg out and not when its bent makes me more confused as well as the doctor. I took my MRI in hard copy form so I could try and get a 2nd opinion from a doctor who isn't younger than me and hopefully knows the anatomy of the foot better than this guy did.

I was prescribed Diclofenac sodium gel, which is some anti - inflammatory topical meant for arthritis aches and pains. and told to rest my foot, not recreate the stretching motion that creates the pain and take NSAID's daily.  It just seems strange to be prescribing me things to try and manage the pain when they can't even tell me what the pain is stemming from.

Damn, i'm sorry to hear it isn't a positive update. Hopefully the second doctor will be able to help more

This sucks. I’m sorry, sounds fucked.
R.I.C.E obviously.
To me it sounds more like a tendon/muscle pull. I’m not a doctor. I can barely read. I feel like nerves would be bothering you more often than In just one position.
Taking supplements has is tricky, and you really need to check what works for you. Magnesium has helped my legs in the past.
Once you feel up to it some stretching and yoga to hopefully even out imbalances will go a long way.
Don’t give up. I got injured playing soccer and it fucked with me for over a year. Hurt to put on pants. Hurt to bend, getting in and out of a vehicle hurt. I quit skating. Went to a bunch of doctors and they couldn’t find anything. This fucking total kook show ‘doctor’ helped me in 3 sessions, doing his own less intense version of Rolfing. Something might be stuck in an incorrect alignment.
It is super frustrating, expensive, disheartening to go to docs, and they look at you from 5 feet away and then make a decision in less than 5 mins.

I appreciate the kind words OK and Paperclip

This is what my foot is looking like today. 4 days after the steroid shot and anti-inflammatory shots were giving on Wednesday. I think I felt first pain around the 2nd week of March after we shoveled out our skatepark . But there was no bruising in the area in the last few weeks, just after getting the shots.

where you see is bruised is the location of the pain. any stretching of my foot in in that ollie / flick motion causes extreme pain, and now I just feel like my foot is getting weaker. I'm going to rest it up for the next few weeks and see if anything improves. apparently if the nerves aren't completely damaged , they can heal very slowly but at least they can heal.

I've read alot of stuff from runners blogs etc. and it seems that nerve damage in the feet can be pretty debilitating to the degrees people want to do activities constantly. I'm hoping I feel some sort of progress with the constant rest. But its a pretty shitty time to be hurt right now as the weather is the best we get all year for skating

Totally rest.
Don’t do what I’ve done multiple times and fall into a pit of despair and depression. If possible.
Muscle imbalances are fucked up. As an example, my feet hurt, in a plantar fasciitis way (undiagnosed). I was noticing that my hips are super tight. Tight hips cause weak glutes, which can cause plantar fasciitis. If you are able to start some yoga, even from just YouTube you might be able to slowly and carefully get your body to a place where it’ll mend.
All I’m trying to say is try and keep your head up, whilst trying different things. Good will come of it.
I hope my ramblings don’t come across as hurtful

I agree completely. I have gotten those shots as well and they didn't really help me either. I had to take a break for two months and then it was just kind of OK again. I tried to stay active and do things that didn't hurt my ancle. I was able to do yoga and ride my bicycle.
I had a similar issues on my other ancle two years later, which kept me from skating for a whole year. It was diagnosed as muscle imbalance that caused pressure on my tendons, which led to chronic inflamation. I did extensive physical therapy to fix that one. I was also prescribed medical insoles. I had to stop skating for almost a whole year. I did traditional karate (very little real sparing) to keep myself occupied. I think that helped to change the balance of my body. I have been skating up to five times a week for the past two years. I stopped doing Karate, but I stretch religiously before a session and I do a little yoga here and there. It pretty much healed completely.

So my advice would be: Be patient. Try not to drink and or eat your misery and stay active with activities that do not cause you any pain and that might help you get in balance again. A good physical therapist might also be able to help you. If possible try to see one that is specialized on sports medicine.

Worth looking into for any foods that you might have a sensitivity to that can cause inflamation (sugar, gluten are some).  Dont stop skating but maybe stop flicking for the mo (duh).

I appreciate the advice S. and givecigs .

I've came to realize in the last 2 days that this must be some Nerve damage in the area of where that bruise is shown in the prior picture (the bruise was from the injections though, not from the injury) .

I've noticed that if I touch my skin in that area with something other than my own finger, I have no feeling there. I can feel pressure, but overall , there is a complete loss of sensation on that area of my skin , if I put something cold on there like the tip of some metal, its like nothing is touching me. If i move it slightly over , I gain full sensation again, and then on top of the 5th metatarsal connection with the phlange, that area burns to the touch. so If I move something foreign lightly over the area the pain stems from , there is either no sensation of touch. Like the area is dead. But if I move over a 1/2 of an inch , full sensation . and then the area below that on the side of my foot burns when touching softly.

I can't believe I didn't notice this earlier, and I can't believe the doctors didn't do any sort of test that would have revealed this. When I was younger I split my shin on a yellow CCS rail. I got maybe 7 stitches in the area, and apparently that had hit a nerve and the area where I scarred, I was never really able to feel sensation again.

This to me seems extremely similar , I stretched my foot in a motion that damaged the nerves in a specific area, and when pulled/stretched into that motion again , causes extreme pain / burning , and when left to rest, has no sensation/feeling.

I am liberally applying CBD oil to this area, and I am going to continue trying to do physical activities like Yoga and skateboarding with as minimal impact on that motion/area as possible. But I feel like its gotta be helpful to keep blood flowing to that area, with minimal activity , CBD lotion foot massages and periodic resting .

I guess if the nerves aren't completely damaged they can heal themselves albeit slowly , I've also read briefly about Cryo shots that freeze the nerves in the area and can relieve pain for months - years . I feel much better than I did last week , at least with knowing whats going on . If I do see another doctor , I think I'll have a better grasp on what I need when going in.

anyone have any experience with Nerve Damage?

Just as an outsider here: you seem to be quite certain it’s nerve damage. Maybe. Maybe not.

-someone that also likes to diagnose themselves and is often very incorrect

got an update, finally was able to see a specialist last week (sports physiatry) and they confirmed that I damaged some part of my Sural Nerve that runs along the outside of my left foot. I have been skating most of the summer, with intermittent pain depending on how much flick I put into Kickflips or BSflips, otherwise the pain is mostly reserved for when I turn my ankle and stretch my foot a certain way, as well as tingling and weird pinching like sensations that are felt randomly throughout the day, some more than others.

the doctor wants to give it 3-9 more months of healing time, to see if I regain feeling in the area and the pain starts to lessen in severity .

trying a combination of CBD / THC topical salves / lotions / patches / Ibuprofen etc. to manage it so I can continue to skate this fall and snowboard during the winter.

really hoping its not permanent damage

My dad dealt with something like this in his foot, multiple broken ankles, feet from dirt biking and what he did was strengthen everything around it as much as possible. He used the balance board in every direction that didn't hurt, he did isometric holes in multiple positions, like sometimes he would go as low as physically possible while standing on his foot and hold for a minute, sometimes he'd go half way, IDK what else he did but eventually he strengthened everything around it.

He doesn't skateboard though and we all know nothing uses the ankle and feet more, GL.

Nerve damage does improve with time (in my specific experience).

I obliterated my collarbone snowboarding a few years ago, had to have it plated and put back together. The surgery left me with quite a bit of nerve damage (burning sensations to touch on my upper arm, shoulder, numbness in the left side of my face occasionally), which felt pretty weird for a couple of years but has gradually improved to the point where it still feels a bit odd now and again but I don't really notice it.

Hope you heal up ok, maybe take the winter off skating if you can hack it.

Also -those balance/wobble boards are great. I'm using one twice a day at the moment to rehab a torn ligament on the inside of my ankle, and it's definately sped up the healing process a bit.
