Progression Paradox
« on: November 08, 2020, 03:12:47 PM »
In my skating I have noticed this paradox. The more tricks I have, it feels like more pressure to be able to maintain all of these tricks. It seems like instead of progression adding to enjoyment progression seems to add to frustration. When I go out to skate now it's not just ollie kickflip shove it but it's also all of those switch nollie fakie etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? How do you deal with it?

I'm bad about that too. I've probably lost more tricks than I have at this point (getting old). But I try to maintain a few favorites that I can still rock. Recently got the switch 3 back.

I've accepted that my bag of tricks just changes over time. Win some lose some.

It's like Oreo realized double stuffs were better than the originals and decided to make thins to balance out the cost of making the DS's.

I’ve actually stumbled into an elegant little workaround for this situation: Gradually become incapable of learning new tricks.  Problem solved.

My skating is like the Fermi paradox.
If you've been skating for 25 years, where are all the tricks?

Would you rather have a deep bag of gross tricks or have a few tricks that you can do really really well?

You should be frustrated and feel bad about yourself if you can’t maintain all your tricks. Like what if you called up to the majors? Get yourself together man, you’re basically a rollerblader now

I could never and don't really want to learn all the tricks, that's like winning or some shit. I like working with what I got. So mostly shuvs and slappies oh and fakie bigspins! Idk tho. Didn't bruce lee say some thing like " I'm not afraid of the man who has practiced 10000 kicks, but the man who has practiced 1 kick 10000 times"
Whoa. Danger.

Nice humble-brag, OP.

I guess, unless they come naturally, that is the burden of wanting to do a lot of different tricks with pop and style; you probably will need to practice a lot of different tricks. Is the burden worth the reward of landing those tricks.

Or maybe just skate to have fun since everybody can do everything now and nobody but your friends are even paying attention to you.
I find that the better one is at skating (be it wide trick selection or the ability to god big or balance the wheelies or skate lots of different terrain) the more fun it is, which is why I am so envious of other skaters. For me the struggle is just too much of a struggle and I feel blessed to just not hurt myself.

Some folks love the challenge of pushing themselves and overcoming fears and muscles that won't obey; and then some folks just like flowing in their comfort zone.
Warm Up Zone. Let's watch some skateboarding videos.

Yep, this. You don't always have to land every trick you got, but with time you'll start to. Personally the only pressure I feel is to maintain a good pop and a kickflip, the skill to go fast if it's a good day.

I do tricks that I like and then sometimes try to do tricks I can't do to see if I like it or not.

When I go skate the pain starts to set in. Usually around 30 minutes or so but at some point it hurts too much to stand up, so when I skateboard I basically give myself a certain amount of tries for tricks and I have it in my head a trick or two that I definitely want to land that day. It feels good to say to yourself, “Only frontside 5-0s today”. Then there’s no pressure to do a backside nose slide on the big ledge.

i realised a long time ago, that as long as i have kickflip, heelflip, 360flip, fs-shuvit and bs180 on lock i can do most of the other tricks in a few tries aswell. so i mainly focus on doing them regulary
but thats just for my regular game.

switch is just hanging on the few tricks i learned and trying not to lose them for me

Film the tricks then you'll maybe feel less shitty if you do lose them or stop doing them.

As long as there is something new to learn, it's easier to deal with for me.

Like, I might never kickflip a 7-stair again and it might be kind of sad, but I'm also finally learning back tails on a curb.

If you're talking strictly flatground, that's what I mostly skate now and yes I do feel that. One sesh I took an hour to land halfcab heel. Next time, 2nd try. It's so random. Just focus on new shit if you're bummed on old shit.
