the skate photography thread
« on: September 22, 2020, 06:57:11 AM »
although I feel stupid doing this I think there is a thread missing that only deals with skate photography: techniques - camera gear - flashes - gallery - tutorials and all the stuff that we struggle with.

To get this one going: I shot with a Hasselblad 500cm for years until film got expensive and I switched back to an analog canon eos 5 with a 15mm fisheye and some ef lenses. thought this was too expensive too and bought my first digital camera recently (which broke after a week): a canon 5d mark II.

My favorite photographer is Sam Rubio, he does a lot for adidas and creates some real magic.

really looking forward to order this:

I also enjoyed watching these to get inspired ...

I bought my first DSLR in 2013 I guess. I've always been on a budget with gear and spent what I guess equivalent to 1.500 - 1.600 USD, but I guess in Denmark tech is by default more expensive than in the US.

I never did a lot of skate photography before, but these days I'm getting into it, and I want to make a zine out of the photos I collect.

Here's a photo a did recently.

Exif
Canon 40D
Focal lenght 18
Aperture 7.1
Shutter 250
One flash
Christ airs, airwalks and darkslides

Never shot skating but Sturt is my favorite. Here's a small sample of some of his iconic images. Currently I'm digging Jake Darwen.

I've always been a fan of Spike Jonze' early skate and BMX photos. My favorite style is the Slow Sync Flash nighttime skate photos. Those can be really exciting, and seems tough to really nail the technique.

I don't know, that's all I got. I don't shoot skate photos but I do have a Canon AE1 and a Pentax Spotmatic, but I use those for regular life pictures.

I'm currently using an Olympus E-M5 Mark III and I love it. The retro look is awesome and it has every feature you can think of. The thing can shoot upto 30fps.

Here are the first 2 skate photos I ever shot (Canon 7D):

And here are 2 photos of me that I shot myself using a remote timer on my Sony R1 (came out in 2005 but has an aps-c sensor and an amazing fixed Carl Zeiss T* lens):

Also bonus pic:

Probably my favorite skate photo I've taken. Something about the depth and colors that stick out to me. Taken with Canon 40D and 50mm 1.8

Been shooting photos for a while now but just recently got a flash, it's crazy how it opens a whole new world of possibilities. If anyone can give some general guidelines pointers it would be greatly appreciated! This site is great for general flash use - https://strobist.blogspot.com

The biggest thing for skate photos and flashes for me, is getting the flash away from your camera.  It'll look a lot better.  You can do that with multiple flashes and wireless triggers, like pocketwizards, or with sync cords.  I use this one a lot.  I hold the flash out with my left hand.
https://www.vellogear.com/product/11584/Vello-OCS_NK6-Off_Camera-TTL-Flash-Cord-for-Nikon-Cameras-(6.5')

Pocketwizards are a little pricey, but there are cheap alternatives on ebay.

Godox is also a great company to get wireless triggers. They’re a bit more affordable than Pocketwizard

Anybody have experience with a flash setup thats mobile? I'm not really into carrying around strobes with lightstands, so at the moment i'm just using 2 speedlites. Flash duration is kinda long though if combating direct sunlight, but honestly i don't really know how to use them.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CF7n5_Al07l/
There was a tutorial Ride way back when they had all the camera segments and one of the LA photographers showed his mobile kit, it was basically 2 small strobes and a bunch of bungee cords and he would just rig his flashes up like that. He did a recreation of the famous old Grant Brittion pic of Natas at that bank in LA that is in an alleyway. Does ride still have all their old content up?

I 've been shooting with the fuji x-series for 5 years because I spent waaay too much money on camera gear when I had a canon DSLR. Do not regret switching, even though it would be nice to have a fisheye again. Might fuck around and buy a cheap setup.

I just finished editing a site with all my photography on it. Made it as a portfolio for class.

www . REW-VM . com

I’ve got the last three concrete jams at Tampa Pro, some demos and contests from around Florida, and some pictures of the homies.

How is there not a thread of this already? Or a better design/art thread? Am I thinking SkatePerception? I'd love for the mods to make a mini SP section for this stuff so it doesn't get buried or whatever.

That Huf photo is sick. I'd also love to see the photo of Kenny Reed doing the nollie that was the poster in Static 2. I've seen the cover, the poster, and the clip that was in his part, but I'm wondering if it's just a screen capture.

Ah found it but no photo cred.

I shoot with a Olympus XA2, Pentax 67, and Fuji XT2. I'd like to shoot more film, but I've found that every time I do, I shoot with the FujiX to meter and it almost always turns out better. I like the film to feel spontaneous or journalistic.

Here's some shit from the XT2 or XT1 when I had it. I need to figure out strobes but it's something that always confuses me and it feels like a bitch to purchase this stuff. I'm getting more into insect photography lately. That shit's cool.

Does anybody else shoot with the same set ups? I'd like to learn more about the XT2, but it seems that it's not common for skateboarding, but more so for like, street photography and shit. Same with the Pentax 67, but with portraiture or studio.
