Sick. Thanks for the suggestions. All photographers got great stuff. I always like environmental skate photographer. Some good inspiration here.

I have a chance this weekend to take some photos of some OG Chocolate riders which include Chico for one of his boards he is releasing. Sort of nervous about it cause most of my skate photos are always just for fun. When it is for something specific, I sort of bug out. Going to try and do some fisheye and long lens. I'll post the photos this weekend.

Best of luck my dude! Can't wait to see the photos. The best way to approach it is as if it were a casual session with your buddies. Pros are usually just regular dudes that are pretty cool (most of the time).

That's true. I think the odd thing is as much as I do shoot skate photos, it is mostly as a bystander. Most of the time I never know the skaters personally. Also shooting strobes still bug me out. There are times where I just don't get what I am doing and the flashes never work properly for what I am trying to do. And to top it off, one of the skaters that will be there I don't even think skates anymore or at least not on a consistent occasion. So I don't even know if he wants me to setup flashes to shoot him. Anyways.....hopefully I am just overthinking this stuff.

So this weekend I got to shoot photos of Chico and Gino for their collab for ChicoStix and Poets. All gear talk aside, it was a pretty cool experience but something that was different too. Meaning I have never been on a photo inspired mission but there is definitely things you have to respect from the skater as well as the filmer (iPhone filmer) as well. I wish I had all the power to get super creative on some of the shoots but it just didn't happen that way. You sort of have to shoot to to what is going on but I did get some stuff that I was happy with.

These two shots are sort of my instagram style photos. I am editing the more skate ones now and will post when done.

Yeah.....actually I am usually pretty good at catching such an obvious dodging but it was hard to see that on my computer for whatever reason (or it was late at night). So once it was posted, it was too late to fix.

It was essentially supposed to match this photo.

Actually that brings up a good question. What is the editing standards of a skateboard photo? I think or know I always go overboard on my photos. Film photos I assume was left as is but for digital, you can go crazy.

Here are all the photos if anyone wants to see them. Pretty hyped on the fisheye ones just cause as stupid as it sounds, I felt like a skateboard photographer setting up 2 strobes and setting up for the shot. Some filler photos but as a photo set for an IG lookbook, I am pretty happy with the outcome.

These are very beast my guy. The Gino pivot fakie captures his style for pivot fakies really well.(If that makes any sense)

Good shit. I totally agree with something it's easy to good a bit too wild with the editing. Best sometimes to wait till the next day to see if you still dig. Loving the Gino pivot. Claim to fame to say you shot him haha...

Shot these two yesterday. Was doing some quick product photos which turned into getting two photos real quick at EMB. My strobes are sort of showing their weakness in sun light  cause the RAW files on these are hardly showing light on him. I had to push them in the edit which sort of makes it look like a natural light photo.

@Simcity........are your photos cropped in? How on earth are you getting in that close without freaking out? That is sort of my issue right now with the fisheye lens. I know the closer you are, the more dynamic the photo. Like Matt Price must literally be a foot out from the skaters to get his shots. I think he uses the 8-15mm fisheye lens too.

Bro these photos are fucking nuts!!!!!

Dunno about Simcity but I do crop my fisheye shots sometimes. There are occasions where the skater also feels uncomfortable with you being very close so cropping a shot is something that happens. Obviously the closer the better like Matt Price for example. I read that he has his lens hit like once per session at least

Yo, if you post a photo on instagram it crops it.I cant be fucked getting a resize app and make the photo look smaller than it is on instagram. Generally outside of insta I do not crop a fisheye photo. I try to get as close of possible with a fisheye. The way I approach it is do not through the viewfinder and trust the skater can actually do the trick. I have had close calls. A friend hit my hood cap before and bent it and another board nearly hit my head as I zoned out. I know Price crops his photos

Another recent one. Fisheye again. This hubba is pretty steep so had to get the shot asap and get the hell out of the way. As Gsosa mentioned there are times that the skater feels uncomfortable with the vertical fisheye right at the landing.

Fongstarr , just get right in there. The chances of hitting the lens are slim are pretty slim if you do not look through the lens and do not zone out haha... Just get the shot and move out of the way asap

Rad shot!

I think from my last experience, I had a really hard time with my composition which made the skater skate longer when they didn't have to. I shot with live view on but once you point your camera up, you can sort of lose your position. Also at times, I do have one flash in hand which can make it also difficult. I guess I just need more practice and more muscle memory.

Those filters are good but you have to make sure they are really clean and do not have any scratches on it. I remember there was an issue with the light from flashes reflecting or something. I stopped using it. It's better for filming in my opinion

@fongstarr
What I generally do is look through the viewfinder and get the skater to stand there focus on him while I also testing the lighting.Set manual then just try to replicate that angle while not looking in the viewfinder. Some test shots. You really do not want to be looking through the viewfinder fish. Surefire way to get a board to the face

How do you guys time your flashes for longer exposure shots, like 1/4 to 1 second shots with a flash? I think they look slightly better with the flash at the end of the exposure rather than the beginning, but that takes several tries to time right. I think my camera only has those two options: beginning or end of the open shutter.

Thanks for the input. I do pre-focus the lens first. Set it at a little bit above infinity and shooting at like f/10, I'll at least get most in focus.

Did another fisheye with Chico. The photo came out okay but man....if I showed you guys the RAW file, you'd be surprised what the before and after looked like. Generally the flash was really not in the right spot cause I had the flash in hand. It flooded most of the wall and his shoes with little flash on his face. Thankfully with a lot of shadow/highlight recovery, I was able to sell it right but if this was a film photo, this thing would have been a total failure.
