5’7”
120lbs
size 9 shoe

I don’t understand how people my size skate anything bigger than 8.25”. I ride a 7.75” and 8” on a regular basis. and even the 8” is too big for some stuff. I have a hard time doing tre flips and hard flips on anything bigger than 7.75”.
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.

Guide is cool, wish they would have left all of the previous shapes in there though. I liked Guy and Shef's 7.5's back in the day

Toy soldier, tail specifically, was the shit. That guide is sick.
[close]

Yep, that tail was the shit. My only complaint is that those boards seemed to chip pretty fast but the shapes were the jam

They did chip. And some broke fast. I’ve said this before tho, I’d so rather have the dope old ps wood, with girl/world shapes, even if I broke them sometimes within hours. They skated great. I’d sacrifice longevity for performance. Every time. I need every bit of help.

Some of the girl shapes, now, have scaled up versions of the old boards, pin tails etc.

I’m glad this thread exists.
I switched back to 7.75 a few years ago cos I thought it might help me learn more flip tricks. It didn’t. Now I’m just used to it I guess. In a way I feel I have more stability on a 7.75 because there’s less board to control if that makes sense. Maybe it’s all in my mind tho. Bombing hills on a thinner board is scarier at first but makes it more fun I think idk

Some of those AWS / Habitat boards had similar shapes in 99-01, and also the same chipping. BUT like you said, I'd rather have those shapes than some long lasting board. I rode a few of those Girl 7.88 around the same time, but I can't remember the tail, which is disappointing

One of the reasons I don’t skate 7.75-7.9, 7.81 eagles, only, is I can’t figure out the truck size. I thought 129s/22s would be too small, but now....

I use 129s. In saying that, I have always liked the trucks a SMIDGE more skinny than deck. Not "magic carpet" level, but a smidge. I have a BMX buddy that has a similar stance on bikes. He told me that most ride a 22 BMX bike but he rides a 20 because a smaller bike is easier to control. "You control the bike, not the bike controls you". I pretty much apply that to boards too.

Plus, after re reading this thread, Julien was riding 129s/22s soooooo

Next step is sourcing the green eagle/other 7.75-7.9 decks.

green eagle has been my go to, partially due to lack of other companies I like making boards in these sizes. I can always feel okay supporting the eagle. I am pondering a 7.625 (or 7.63?) Toy Machine "devil cat", but I don't technically need a board yet as the weather has been garbage here lately so I haven't been skating. I also ponder Dark Room's 7.75 and/or if Alien has a 7.75. Occasionally, TOA has some 7.75s (Magenta I think?).

Devil cat is classic, wonder if it’s pointy/mellow?
Baker script looks decent.
Haven’t seen DarkRoom’s in person.
The alien is listed at a dope shop, but has a longer wb.
I almost bought one of those magenta team boards in 7.6, too small for me tho.

Ideally ps if it’s not an eagle.

I haven't see the devil cat in person in years .. and that is the same question I have for it!
I've had the Baker 7.56 a few times, that was a good board.
I haven't held the Dark room, but my shop has it. It looked liked a wider 7.75 to me, but I also wasn't scoping it out on that day! Whats the alien wb?

I think the alien was listed at 14.25, which is cool, just not me.
I also like that the green eagle is less than 31.5”.

doomsayers has these two shapes if anyone is interested

7.5" WB 13.75" L 31"

7.75" WB 13.75" L 31.25"

while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

Is it crazy to ride a 7.8 with 5.6's?

7.75 measurements looking ideal. I’d be shocked if the board actually had a 13.75” wb tho. I’ve chased rare measurements before, currently sitting on a dope evisen that isn’t what it said it’d be, so I kinda feel like it’d be 14” wb. Still sick.

Might set up one of these when the East Coast thaws out.  A couple of questions though.  Are there any Thunder trucks you'd recommend for a smaller deck, or are Venture 5.0 lows the standard?  And I'm a Conical Full rider, should I go back to using classic spitfires for this kind of setup?

Thunder low 145s were good for 7.75. I think they are not called low now though just 145?

Thunder 145s are good (well my memory of them some 15 years ago is fond), so you could stick with thunders. Venture 5.0 lo’s are dope, but a lot of that is my nostalgia. I wouldn’t use conical fulls on a smaller setup mainly because the hangers aren’t big to begin with, a skinnier wheel makes me feel like I’ve got more room for grinds. If you are using 5.0 lo’s/145, neither are very tall, so a 52 mm conical full is going to wheelbite more. I’ve run 52 classics, and that can work, but I personally don’t like to go more that that.
Condensed: I’d be stoked to setup 145s/147s, and 52, or smaller classics.

I asked Brian Seber on Instagram if they rode 129 or 139s back in the day on 7.75s. He said 139s so I’m thinking a green eagle with my venture 5.2 highs.

If you’re just using your 7.75 to work on flat and maybe some manuals 129s should be fine, but if you plan on skating curbs, ledges, or rails then 139s should be highly looked into. 129s are great for flat and flip tricks and pretty much everything else BUT grinding; every time I would skate a curb or ledge on 129s it just felt so unstable and wobbly and squirrelly when I was on it, so I pretty much use my 7.75 strictly for messing around on techy flatground stuff now whenever I get the urge to do so and have pretty much moved back to my wider setup for whenever I’m skating anything else.

It’s funny my friends kid has a 7.25 with129s and they look insane. I can’t believe I learned crooks on an 8.25 with 129’s. I regularly switched from 7.6 up to 8.25 with the same 129’s when I was a kid.

I second the 22s/129s/145s/5.0 on 7.75.

Did the 33 overhang thing for a while. Hate it now. Turns weird; flips weird. Lost my balance on the coping more because I locked in so close to the edge of my board concave and had no leverage to pop off. Same with ledges.
I'll give you one thing, you got half your name right.

I love 8" trucks on a 7.75-7.8 it slows the flip down and locks into grinds better imo

yooo my narrow deck riding brethren. I ride 8.5+ but I found a set of older, hardly skated venture 5.0s and am thinking about setting up a smaller board to fling around on flat. I'm generally really, really uncomfortable on narrow and small, but might give it a go

Who presses good boards for this style of skating? 48mm, 50mm? loose v tight? I've got a homie who rides 7.5 with no wobble room and I don't know how he does it. Please show me the way.

Maybe get like a 7.75, and try one that’s a bit longer? Alien has a 7.75x14.25 wb on the 35th site. What’s your regular wb?

I just recently started reading about wheelbase and measured my current set up and the one prior, as well as a couple dlx I've got sitting around and it seems like 14.5wb is my sweet spot. The one that measured 8.5x14.25wb wasn't a good set up for me. Maybe the wheel base would feel different with smaller trucks/wheels/narrower deck

Unlikely that a board less than 8 will have a 14.5 wb. I think I saw a dgk listed with that wb, dunno tho. Anyways, a longer, for a sub 8” board, might be helpful for you. So something like: 7.75x14.25x31.5+

right on. thanks. I'm going to keep my eye out for sale decks and shit. see what comes up. I've ridden 8.5ish bb wood, excluding that one with 14.25wb I mentioned, for as long as I can remember. stick with what works... so it'll be interesting to see what something else feels like.
