What are you most picky about when making a new setup?
« on: September 29, 2020, 07:31:10 PM »
Of course having the right deck is a big factor, but what are else are you picky about?

Example of mines are only buying 7/8 Allen key and having bones soft bushings on the back truck. Can’t stand looking at the Philips head

Was I’m not really that picky. I like to have a cut in my grip or at least a couple small dots with a bright marker to easily see which side is nose and tail but occasionally I don’t mark the grip at all and just skate my board whichever way I throw it down.
I guess I’m also picky about removing the truck kingpin washers. My trucks can’t get near loose enough it’s the washers on.
I’m a fat Siamese cat.

Bottom washer on front truck must come off. 3 wheels facing inward, one wheel out, stickers only around the front truck. no squared board shapes, Preferably mellow-ish kicks and concave.

Wheel graphics in is obvious, right? Like why even have graphic wheels if we're bein honest. I'm picky about wheels. Like I think spits are OK but my favorite wheels are always a smaller company, like pusher were my favorite jawns.
Also the whole bitch gotta look cool.
Whoa. Danger.

My cutting skills suck so I use a file to really sand the grip into the board, makes the subsequent knife work much easier.

Colored front bolt, just 1.

Wheel graphics in. Magic carpet. Black grip with a 1/8" strip of top veneer visible 1" above the back truck holes. Trucks tightened at least a quarter turn more than stock.

Griptape needs to be applied perfect or as close to perfect as humanly possible. No bubbles, straight razor cuts, etc. I've applied griptape that most people would rate a 9/10 on the "perfect scale," ripped it off, and put on a new sheet. It's a legitimate obsessive tendency, but I've grown to accept it.

Colored front bolt, just 1.

I use this old screwdriver to wear the edge on the grip first. Basically rub it until it almost cuts it, then use my razor to cut it easily.
Then the grip scraps to sand the edges

Guess I have dumb brain for using a file, a small screen driver is easier to fit in my gear pouch instead a full file, although it does a great job of getting rid of stubborn bits along the edges.

I've done the file myself! I was in a rush one time in say 2003 and got this screwdriver from my neighbor's kid, and its been my sanding tool since. (Its halfway worn through in the middle now haha.) File works great for sure. I am not a fan of the tiny particles of grip/sand that get everywhere during this process

7/8" allens
No fucking gripripples around the bolts
Silver nuts for hardware (on raw plates, blk on blk plates is ok)

Under 32"
14.125/14.25" WB
6.5" tail

- used to worry about grip cut, now I don't, I just go skate and fuck it up right away to get over it, tho sometimes those fast cuts in the cut pockets cut in too much :(

- used to worry about wheel graphics, now I just grab the wheel and put the bearings in whichever side is down, so I never wheels with graphics all in or out unless it randomly happens. I've also taken to steel wool and removing wheel graphics entirely; if I'm riding spits, OG graphics outward every time.

Pretty much.
I’m terrible at arts and crafts, and have legitimately started nervously sweating in shops when I’m setting up a board around the cool folks. I just get it on and get out. If it’s too perfect it’ll fuck with me, and the areas I’ve always lived in have lots of leaves etc so that shit (and shit) is getting smeared into the grip at some point, which I hate.
Never used steel wool, good idea. Used griptape scraps and that knocks of most wheel graphics ok. I’d rather have a product id in the bearing seat, so I could check later. But yeah.

I remembered another one, I use grip scraps to sand my grip down pretty hard when I set up a new deck.
I’m picky about new grip not being too grippy.

- Indicator bolt(s) go closest to the tail
- stock bushings (at least the bottom ones) go in the garbage
- 3 speed rings on the inside of each wheel (none on the outside)
- 14" wheelbase
- no overly pointy deck shapes (doesn't have to be FA/Quasi square, but I don't mind if it is)
- no one grips my board but me
- stickers go on before the trucks
- safety warning stickers come off (and sticky residue removed) before grip goes on

No stickers!
Wheel graphics in...I got a new set of Classics a few weeks ago...writting side faces out (for me).
Oddly enough, dust, sidewalk chalk, etc used to bug me on my grip but now I could not care less.
Black grip. Tried Shake Junt, felt like a kook. Went back to Black.

I always have to leave a sheet of grip tape in the freezer overnight before setting up a new board.  When I’m ready, I apply it immediately after taking the grip tape out of the freezer while it is still nice and cold.  Then I leave it alone and let it return to room temperature.

This causes the glue to adhere to the board little by little.  This creates a stronger bond and helps tighten the wood up, pulling it slightly taut so the board is crispier and has more pop.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

I always take off my front truck first, very meticulous about the edges on my grip. Wheel graphics in, fresh razor every time I cut my grip, and first Ollie on carpet next to my bed. No idea why but I think it’s bc I’m too excited and just want to see how it feels.
Well I have like 9 Andy Anderson dated flight decks.

and i use to think the stories about Rodney Mullen keeping wheels in the freezer were crazy.
