Knob buster questionably ruining the integrity of a spot?
« on: October 18, 2020, 10:01:32 PM »
I think what the knob buster does is cool, but I think this one crosses the line and it ruins the integrity of this spot. Unless I'm wrong , part of what makes this rail what it is is the L at the end which makes it more difficult to skate. There were no knobs to be taken off and he just chopped off part of what makes the spot unique.

If I'm wrong about this and the spot originally didn't have it and I'm kooking it let me know. Really don't want to be that guy I just am looking for others' input on this.

What the knob buster does is cool, but part of me wonders about the value of resuscitating the same tired Southern California spots we've been seeing since 2002, rather than finding different shit to skate.

As for this instance: I think it crosses a line. What was once a (somewhat) interesting spot is now basically a flatbar across a grass gap.

That spot was still skatable right? Making a skatespot easier is pretty lame. Doing stuff. like grinding off part of a rail draws unnecessary attention to the spot.

I'm just excited to learn about the phrase "bear trap" for perpendicular railings. Is this a new phrase?

I thought a bear trap was two parallel rails next to eachother with just enough space for you foot/leg to fall into while the rest of your body keeps on trucking down the set.

Couldn't agree more, and the reason I wanted to get a discussion on this. Definitely crosses the line and as others have also pointed out, it was already skateable, this just made it a less interesting and easier spot to skate.

There is a whole world of unskated spots (even in Southern California) and I think skateboarding has been in a pretty good place lately with spot selection (minus the SD Indy crew skating the same SD rails every day) and this doesn't necessarily help, though it is cool

If the spot was already skateable without removing anything it just becomes straight up vandalism. Quirkiness of the spot due to imperfections is part of what makes spots interesting. Do what you need to do to make a spot skateable but this didnt need it

And a very manageable close-out at that.

Yes and once you saw it off it's a berra trap.

On the subject, I agree with TwisT and Stu Pickles.

i always appreciate the popoutsmanship on display with those L-ends on the rail. removing one of those unnecessarily is kinda indicative of a person who doesn't really skate

Props to the knob buster for all the other spot liberations, but it seems like the bear trap gave that spot clout.

Side note, if you're going to start modifying property, best to leave your cell phone at home.
