SOTY Winners of Countries & States
« on: October 29, 2020, 08:59:55 AM »
I put together this list, let's get some discussion out of this list.

For example:

1. I find it interesting that we've had SOTY's win from Finland, Columbia, and Argentina...yet still we haven't had a Spanish winner. Look I know essentially Phelp's just choose who he liked...but now that he's gone it might change up a bit...even if its Thrasher

2. Out of 30 SOTY's, ten reside or grew up in California where skateboarding was born. That's 1/3 of the list.

3. Six SOTY's have come from outside the USA. Interesting because Brazil should definitely have more than just Bob. I'm thinking Luan or Tiago.

Skater of the Year

(1990) Tony Hawk (USA; California)
(1991) Danny Way (USA; Oregon)
(1992) John Cardiel (USA; California)
(1993) Salman Agah (USA; Washington, D.C.)
(1994) Mike Carroll (USA; California)
(1995) Chris Senn (USA; California)
(1996) Eric Koston (USA; born in Thailand on military base; California)
(1997) Bob Burnquist (Brazil)
(1998) Andrew Reynolds (USA; Florida)
(1999) Brian Anderson (USA; New York)
(2000) Geoff Rowley (England, part of United Kingdom)

Not really sure what to do with this info. I guess the topic sentence is that SOTY has gone to Americans, mostly. And Californians. Exactly what one would presume if we have knowledge of skateboarding's history, which is distinctly American and Californian.

It'll be interesting to revisit this in another 20 years to see if things shift international as skating has truly only gone global recently.

Also, "Spanish"?!? That seems like a very random European country to single out. I know Barcelona has a lot of spots, but other than Javier Samiento, not a ton of classic skaters from Spain come to mind from 1990-2020. Hell, most famous skaters who reside in Barcelona now (i.e. the Sour team), aren't Spanish.

Also, Danny Way may have been born in Oregon, but that dude is SoCal through and through.

Brian Anderson is from Connecticut. Represent.
Warm Up Zone. Let's watch some skateboarding videos.

I guess what you can get out of this amount of data is, that people who grow up where it's warm and wheres there is a lot of other skateboarders is better at skateboarding?

You need to take into consideration that this is just Thrasher SOTY. In Brazil we have Cemporcentoskate and they also do a SOTY contest, of course it isn't the same as the bible and the mecca of skateboarding, but I'd still be thrilled to get this award, specially because it's from home. I'm sure other countries also do the same thing locally.

Dude I don't who you are...but I'd easily bet you $500 that Mason wins. It's a bygone conclusion at this point.

Mason winning SOTY is more set in stone right now than our own Presidential election

Yeah when I was making the list I made that mistake:

I saw this:

Brian Anderson is a professional skateboarder based in Queens, New York City.
Born: June 12, 1976 (age 44 years), Groton, CT
Residence: Queens, New York, NY
Awards: Thrasher Skater of the Year

I saw New York and accidently put it down. I'm sorry GAY
