I remember Ben Rayborne (when he was still on the map) asking on Instagram if anyone had a used iPhone 4S they could sell him, and I realized that being a top shelf pro skater sponsored by some of the biggest brands in the industry still meant you had to ask random people on the internet for a hookup on a used cell phone

Frugality and wealth are not even close to mutually exclusive.
Are people here really this clueless about money and wealth?
I remember my grandfather Fixing golf tees that were broken.  I will say the sheer amount of the inheritance caused two of his kids to lose their shit in a way i have only seen in movies or tv.  Seriously, if it was a clean break he took them home, little glue and wrap a string around.  And not just his, any that were cracked the long way but complete that he saw he would pocket.

I wouldn’t buy the newest iPhone ever.  Why would I spend the equivalent of 10%ish percent of my rainy day fund on a phone.

Does this mean you're putting Ben Rayborne on the richer side of the list?

And I try to reuse my golf tees as much as possible.  But glue and tape is next level.  Respect.

No, I’m saying all I know about Ben Rayburn’s money situation is that he wanted to spend less money on a phone than he would have to if it was new.
Maybe because he was poor, maybe because he was trying to save money.  I have no idea, but someone’s spending habits are not a great indicator without more knowledge, just as what their parents did for work(without knowledge of their fiscal habits) will not tell us how much money they have.

Who has “fuck you” money?
If they have been wise financially, should be Rocco, Mullen, the birdman, nyjah, sheckler, spike jones, dyrdek.  That’s probably about it.
Founders of supreme maybe. Maybe janoski.
Bam should, but depends on how his money was handled.

Janoski sold the royalty rights to Nike early on in the game. I'm sure it was for a handfull of millions and he still gets other back-scratch from Nike but don't assume because his shoes have been killing for years that his wealth has been growing with it.

I'd say the poorest pros are the ones in the USA who don't realize that when you are 1099'd that you have to save throughout the year(s) in order to pay your taxes.

No, that was never true. Janoksi has denied it in multiple interviews.

Rowleys gotta be up there from vans royalties alone.  He helped vans establish that iconic wave logo and has had the most pro model shoes to date maybe?

Maybe he's thinking the late 90's early 00's Vans pro series logo

EDIT: I remember on his 9Club interview, he said was basically the driving force for Vans go back to the OG side stripe logo from the logo they used above in the late 90's early 00's.

I don't know, but Max Palmer works at skateshop. Come on Alex give him money.

The fact that he actually has a job probably makes him a middle-class skater.

Yeah, good point.  Reminds me that there have been / currently are a couple pros who live in their vans, but that might make them more financially well off than a pro who pays rent for an apartment somewhere in California.

What is rent like out there anyway?

Depends on where in CA you're at. SF is more expensive than LA. And in LA, Long Beach is cheaper than Hollywood.

But if I was like some pros, like Servold, who are on tour 80% of the time, I'd do the van life. That or just rent a room at a homie's house since all you really need is storage space.

If Spike Jonze counts as a skater then by looking at his IMDB credits, mostly for directing/producing features,tv and adverts, then I reckon he could be up there for sure. Part-founder of Crail and Viceland creative director isn't too shabby either.

Knowing how highly acclaimed and sort after he is in the advertising/film world I'm sure he could do a slew of big ads whenever if he wants to make dumb money.

There's probably some pro skaters out there who make nice investments as well though - that saint archer thing seemed to pay off well for everyone, a couple of those and you would be laughing
