Mason is sponsored by the right companies who are connected directly to or spend the real money in Thrasher, so it's going to him

This idea that it comes down to what companies someone rides for is getting a bit out of hand. I don't think it makes a difference when you've had the year Mason has and to suggest otherwise is ignorant. If you're good enough for SOTY, you're probably on big companies anyways, companies that likely advertise in Thrasher, and that are aware of how good you're skating and will likely push your brand all year in hopes of capitalizing on your output. Who was the last skater that got shafted from SOTY because of who they rode for? Remember, Foy got it when he rode for Diamond footwear. When was the last time a skater won it that you couldn't make an argument that they were the best skater of the year?

No Fred Gall? No vote.

Don't worry, this vote is just for second place. Same as every year.

Mason deserves it but I voted for lil b. Tom knox’s part was awesome to say the least but I don’t see thrasher ever giving it to him  :'(

Tom and Tony Vitello are very good friends so it's not far fetched at all.

I see. Although this supports my argument, it's kind of hard to compare SOTY selections from the pre and post Insta age. Also, when Chris Cole won it he did have legit sponsors for the time. Fallen and Zero were both pretty big companies back then, even if Zero was in decline to some extent.

Winning SOTY has never been about how good you are.

It's about how much marketing (ad's, interviews, tours, videos) you did for the mag and does the mag like you

This has never been a secret and I still don't get why people don't understand this

It's kind of insane to think that the magazine created to promote a brand of skateboard trucks is some noble institution, beyond the reach of commercialism. It's not as though Nike calls and says "Mason is SOTY, here's the check?" It's just the natural consequence of our economic order.
This is not my SOTY. I'm telling my kids there was no SOTY for 2021

Pretty sure at least the first SOTY win came in part from from Zero's dominance of the first few years of King of the Road. They may be corny now but Thrasher backed Zero pretty hard in the early aughts

How is it not about how good you are? Tell me of a SOTY that you couldn't make an argument that they were the best skater that year? Of course marketing is tied into it. If someone is on a tear their sponsors and the mag are going to capitalize on that and promote them heavily because they want to showcase your talent and sell product.

I would have picked someone other than AVE (can't remember exactly, but I think Evan Smith might have been my pick that year. Could be mixing that up though), but he did have a sick part in Propeller and for someone of his age to be going that hard was insane. I don't think you could argue it was totally undeserved though. If Vans was paying for an award for one of their riders that year Gilbert would have been the dude.

Phelps was quoted as saying he won it for “services rendered”.   I’m not upset and AVEs a guy who should have it.

Alexis Ramirez has last part in a new Sk8Mafia video that dropped today. The second song is all hammers. I love Mason and totally think it's his year but you gotta acknowledge when people really put in the work. 2020 is apparently about quality AND quantity

Shoutout Tom Knox

Ramirez is just too obscure to win.  We know him, but I don’t know if the average skater does.  Big sponsors help by putting their name forward.  He’s been outshone by his own teammate this year.  SOTY is to sell mags and names do that

Is it just me or all the music in the videos kinda sucks. Idk it's all really slow and shit like that. I would like mason's footage to be set to something more fast not some airy music. Idk it doesn't fit the footage its like if your WWE walkout song was september.

Suciu has put out a ton of insta content this year and is probably sitting on a bunch of footage. I’m hoping 2021 is finally his SOTY year, but probably not.

2020 is Mason’s year and it’s not even close.
