I'm lucky enough to have seen him in his time. I thought he was the perfect player. His flaws only made him a better footballer in my eyes. They enhanced the myth of the mutant, a man specially designed for the game and nothing but the game. After the final whistle he was an utterly lost human being, but on the field he did things no one thought were possible, and suspected should be illegal. Sometimes they were illegal. But there was nothing that could stop him. The semi of 1986 is so perfect an illustration of who Maradona was as a player that it is still hard to believe it actually happened the way it did. Scoring the two most famous goals in football history, his brace devastated the originators of the game in the most ungentlemanly way. First by cynical deception, and four minutes later, by flagrant superiority. To think what he could have done on a skateboard with those marvelous feet!

I'm too young to have experienced Maradona in his prime. When he turned 60 a few weeks ago, I binge-watched videos of him on youtube. What a player! The likes of Messi and Ronaldo don't even come close to his genius, which always bordered on insanity (just watch his last match for Barca against Bilbao). I feel like he's best summed up what a friend of mine said about him: "If you have a drop of anti-establishment, alternative values in your blood, Maradona is your kind of football player. Messi and Ronaldo are the favorites of the mainstream, Maradona is the hero of the oppressed." A-fucking-men.

RIP

This video almost makes me cry.

I was fortunate to visit Napoli with my wife and family before the pandemic. I have never seen so many Maradona jerseys before. I haven't been to Argentina but I'm sure I'd say the same about it. Their love for him there is unreal. Well deserving of course. Best pizza I've ever had too. Naples is very cool. Only regret is not taking my board to cruise around while there.

George Best also died on November 25. Maradona was pretty great in his wacky way.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.
