i feel you. i’m learning to accept the disability and chronic health concerns in my life but not being able to skate as queer skating has grown here in my city and in the broader sense has been heartbreaking and frustrating at times.

i’ve found other ways to be involved, though. i’ve solicited donations and assembled setups for giveaway events, i’ve spoken about my experience as someone who started skating in 1987 to give a sense of history, and when i can i make it to sessions and events to support the next generation. it’s not the same, but it’s a good thing in its own way and a reminder that there are many roles to play in this big thing called skateboarding.

I wish! I seriously considered going but have a couple conflicts and not enough PTO from work. I never went to skate camp or anything as a kid so I'd love to do it as an adult. I'm envious, have a blast!

Seeing it in person was fucking mind-blowing. He did a few tricks in a row, all first try over the largest bump to bar. No one else landed more than one trick consecutively. Chandler deserves all the praise he gets and more.

Yea it's so fucking garbage. The biggest shop in my city is run (or once was run) by some real bigots and that shit permeates the scene at large. There are only like 3 cishet guys that I still skate with since transitioning because I just don't feel like its worth the risk of casual misogyny, transphobia etc. If your area has queer skate groups they're a great place to meet people that are less terrible haha

The worst. I know some people can handle it or speak up about it and shut folks down, but I'm highly introverted (and insecure if I'm being honest) and basically just go to a place of being uncomfortable/bummed...and then I just don't ever go back.

There is a gay couple that frequents my local (rollerskaters). It was recently their anniversary and they posted a progression video, in the comments they thanked me specifically for making them feel welcome at the park. Which really made me stoked, but also kinda caught me off guard because i've never really done anything other than just chat with them. Mostly surface level conversations. A couple times i've had to REGULATE some of the younger dudes saying some dumb shit (they all comply and feel dumb/embarrassed), but i didnt think the couple took notice of that stuff.

Any way, one of them started to take an interest in skateboarding recently so I've been giving him tips here and there. I hope his boyfriend picks it up too, that would be rad.

I also hosted a skate event at another park last weekend and a few members of the LGBT community DM'd me afterwards saying how much fun they had or that they felt safe or included. Again, this completely caught me off guard. I didn't make any special preparations for any gender/orientation at the event, but the feedback made me happy nonetheless.

Both of these things kinda made me realize how little you have to do in order to make LGBT people feel welcome. Basically you just talk to everyone the same and tell people to shut up people when they are being dumb. I really havent done anything aside from that lol.

Just wanted to share these things after reading other people's less positive stories, that shit sucks. But just know there are people out there that have your back. Also, i felt like this was the best place to share these things.

Kindness, particularly in a situation that feels threatening, is such a gift.

I know this might be a bit of a stretch, but for me it's not at all: when I came to SLAP and started posting openly about my sexuality, I was sort of caught off guard by the kindness that was extended to me by FAR more people than those who were hostile. Of course the hostility often gets the attention because it's hard to take, but I've discussed on here a ton about how awesome folks were.

I think in general more people are kind and good...but the nasty fuckers suck all the air out of the room and basically ruin it for everybody.
