Hand Signals from the Unconscious
« on: December 07, 2020, 12:07:28 PM »
Back in the day when we started filming and analyzing tricks, my friends pointed out that I was doing a weird pose with my hands during tricks, and only during tricks. My left hand would awkwardly spread out all fingers but the thumb, and my right hand would spread out the thumb and index finger. My magic number six, as they said.

This has been consistent for decades now, and it's completely out of my control. Even if I try to keep my hands relaxed, it will happen as soon as I fully focus on the trick. I've always wondered if this is just my thing, or if others have it, too. None of my friends do, and pretty much everyone I watch seems to have relaxed or at least completely inconsistent hand poses.

To illustrate, I am including the oldest photo I could find, from around 1998. Funny side note, my shoes were already size 14 or even 15 but nevertheless I was riding a 7 7/8 deck. Talking about bad mentorship in the skate shop! Then a clip from today, 22 years later, but sure enough I am still running with my magic number six.

It's just part of some people's style. I never really watched what my own hands do but I know I've always liked it when in a photo or clip it looked like the skater was putting so much of him or herself into their maneuver, even their hands looked busy focusing, in a way so honest it couldn't be faked. So in my books, you should be thankful to have such expressive style.

Thanks for the kind words. I don’t hate it, but I guess I made it sound like that a bit. I actually appreciate it as something that has stuck with me for a long time, the continuity of it. It’s a curiosity, so I’ve been wondering where it comes from. It can feel tense when I realize. There is a fine line between hyper focus and anxiety for me in general, and it gets blurry when I skate sometimes.

I often catch myself making a fist before I pop. Have to relax myself.

I always liked how Jeremy Klein would put his arm out ahead of him before a trick. It reminds me of Ernie McCracken's form in Kingpin:

Interesting, he is doing it consistently, too! So I guess it is more common than I thought, possibly just not as elaborate as my pose, or I simply have not paid enough attention.

My back hand is always in a fist and my front is always doing some form of those devil horns people do at heavy metal concerts.  This is too dumb to make up.

When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

Sick, raised fist combined with sign of the horns is proper hellride. Also it is very much 2020, Zeitgeist has caught up with you!  ;D

My hands are always calling out WESTSIEEEEDE

It's embarrassing because I live in East San Diego

Funny, I do the exact opposite. Front hand fisting, back hand spazzing out.

Left hand splays it all out for the world, right hand crams into a potato fist.

The thumb caps the fist like a thumb war defeat, as oppose to locking it down a la punching something.

The arms windmill and I purse my lips.

It’s absolutely horrendous, but it’s mine.
You know I thought these forums were a for skating not discussing fetishes
